“Yin Yangs represent light and dark.”
— Novanca
I think the island might be shaped like a yin yang.
I think it might be a yin yang. Yin yangs represent light and dark (black and white) which is a fairly common theme in the show. Locke holds up the two backgammon pieces, one black and one white. The stones in the cave where Jack and Kate go after the bee hive/Charlie are black and white. There are many more black and white references in the show, here’s the site I used to find some: http://www.hanttula.com/projects/lost/other-notes/references-to-black-white
Another clue is that in season 2, “dave” when Jack and Sawyer go to confront the “others”, one of them says “right here, there’s a line.” Of course, that could mean anything so I might be totally off by saying this. A yin yang has a line that separates the light and the dark sides. Maybe the island does too.
just to make this simpler to read, here’s all my ideas why the island is shaped like a yin yang. 1) A yin yang represents light and dark, which is a common theme on the show.
2) the “other” says that there is a line. Maybe the line is the line in the middle of a yin yang, separating light and dark.
3) The 815 survivors always talk about “our side of the island” (aka the beach and some surrounding jungle).
4) Yin-yang are Opposing
"Yin and yang describe the polar effects of phenomena. In viewing any one phenomenon (or the comparison of two phenomena), yin and yang describe the opposing qualities inherent in it. For instance, winter and summer would be the yin and yang, respectively, of the year." (got from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_yang#Two_qualities). Maybe the others and the 815 survivors are the "opposing qualities."
5) Another thing from the wikipedia source says yin and yang are just halves but if you put them together, they make a whole. That would suggest that the 815ers and the others are both supposed to be on the island because- to use the wiki example- without summer (or winter) the year wouldn’t be whole. It would just be one half and be incomplete. So whatever is happening on the island, I think it requires everyone originally from the crash and all of the original others. That’s why Ben tells Jack that everyone has to go back if they want to get back to the island. The yin yang has to be whole.
6)Just to put this in here, this is another site that I didn’t really use but it explains yin yang in simpler terms: http://fly.cc.fer.hr/~shlede/ying/yang.html
7)symbol of the interplay of forces in the universe. This ties in to my point #5 in a way, all the forces have to be there to complete the whole but this also kind of represents the back and forth from the others and the 815 people.
8)white and black represent enlightenment and ignorance. I think this also ties in well with the show because some people from 815 (Locke) are seeking enlightenment while others- Jack mainly- choose the remain ignorant. By choosing to remain ignorant I mean of the island’s properties (like Locke getting healed by it several times and Jack getting sick on it near the end of season 4).
9) represents the idealized harmony of these forces; equilibrium in the universe. I’m not sure what this could mean exactly but I think my thought is that it’s something about good and “evil” (if that’s what you’d call it) or light and dark sides of something coexisting together. I read that the universe would be sort of off balance without good and bad things. It’s like that saying “too much of a good thing isn’t actually good” (or something to that general effect). Like too much candy but instead of candy, too much good luck or something. and vice versa for too much of a bad thing….

I think I posted this on one of my things of this already but just as an added thought (sorry if this is a double) but there’s 2 islands that are sort of “connected” so maybe each one represents one side. Maybe one is yin and the other yang. It could be that the two islands- the one the 815 people are on and the one where Jack, Kate and Sawyer are taken- have to be connected (literally, like they would have to fuse together somehow) to experience the full “power” of the island(s) and solve more of the mysteries/figure out what’s going on. Let me know what you think!
um no. There were some awesome 3-d maps of the island posted with links on this site several months ago that you may find interesting. Search for “map of the island”
ah sorry everyone…..hadn’t seen them. Thanks for telling me ChloZo!
