Most of my theories and observations border on the ridiculous, this is no exception.

In S04-E13-14 Ben puts metal objects into the machine to access the frozen donkey wheel room, this is something Edgar Halliwax explicitly states not to do.

We have seen before that Halliwax/Candle/Wickmunds’s speeches are not trustable, in both the Swan orientation video and the Pearl orientation video, information is withheld from the subjects intended to watch the videos. So it is no great surprise that Ben as an upper level member of the island knows to bypass the video content and gain access to the hidden room.

When Halliwax states “metallic objects must never be placed within the vault”, do you think that he knows what will happen? Or is he in the dark as to what lies behind the vault?

Now to the ridiculous part. When Halliwax says this he repeats an odd hand gesture

sda

It’s a scissor gesture. Then in other orientation clips, he repeats a similar scissor gesture along with an equally odd rock gesture,

sa sdj soa ada

So, I was wondering if his scissor gesture means cut information and the rock reinforces the information? A code for the upper level members perhaps?

Rock Paper Scissors game aside, do you think Halliwax is a man that knew the island could be moved via the donkey wheel? Or was he just another Dharma scientist performing “silly experiments”?

    fantastic!

It is almost like everything should be taken the opposite of what he says and that whole rock, paper, scissors thing is a good catch.

Neat. I think you’re onto something.

Maybe it is sign language. He is sending a message that they are in danger.

Personally I believe he knew about the Donkey Wheel, at least because he’s been on the island for such a long time and seems to be a high ranked member of Dharma.

I think the DI knew about the room below and the station was built to harness the power that moves the island in order to power the time machine in the orchid.

I think we are to assume that they are both powered by the same ‘exotic matter’

Makes me wonder what that chamber would do if there was no metal put into it. Is it attached in a gear type way to the donkey wheel?

That is a stretch…but you never know with Lost.

I think Halliwax has been to the wheel room, mostly because of the cold weather jacket that Ben dons to go down there (it has Halliwax’s name on it.)

I also think this is a stretch, but an entertaining theory. Got a lot of time on your hands?

Totally pirate, the jacket! So we are pretty sure that Halliwax had, at some point, access to the wheel room. Thanks for that!

I am of the opinion that Dharma didn’t know the frozen room was there at all. The room looked ancient along the same lines as Ben’s creepy closet room. The Dharma initiative were obviously not the first inhabitants of the island. I think that Ben put all the metal into the machine so that it would blow, kinda like a microwave, and Ben also knew that there wouls be an explosion exposing the hidden room. There must be a reason that the Orchid is built over the roon, there could have been energy coming from that particular spot on the island as Kevin Johnson said above, they were trying to harness it, for cloning or whatever it is they were doing down there, (which I do think had a t least something to do with cloning, as we saw in the orientation video.) But I doubt that Dharma knew anything about moving the island, why would they have not don eit before then? And if they did know about it why would they build a machine directly over the opening? They would have had to knock down walls and rebuild a machine every time they wanted to use it! just my thoughts!

What if the wheel stays where it is and only island moves? Then island has to be at the same location with the wheel to be moved.

you know, for some reason, i like this. i really do.

HAH! I like that too. Rock, paper, scissors… very nice catch. I’m oblivious to any evidence that supports that he knows about the donkey wheel, so naturally, I have no opinion. : ) +1 for the great observation!

    Hmm. Pretty good. +1

I don’t think the “upper level members” needed a sign language in order to know what part of the Orientation Videos was to be believed… because, if they were “upper level”, they’d already know, right? :-)

However, there are several strong hints that make us viewers suspect Dharma was all about “theatricals”. Skinner Boxes all around.

So yes, I do think Halliwax knew about the Wheel, and also knew it was something that should be hidden, and also knew The Orchid was nothing but a wizard-of-Ozly façade. A fancy site to make the “initiates” believe they were “in the know”.

And now I’m thinking about that “Orchid” video we were served for starters. There’s a bit when Halliwax say “I’m a scientist, not an… ” [“actor” is the most obvious guess]. At the time, I assumed he was complaining on the proceedings of making the movie. Now I think he was complaining because, well… he was acting. The whole thing was a show.

    Did I make sense?

Five stades “Most of my theories and observations border on the ridiculous, this is no exception.” This means I like the ridiculous quite a lot. I knew I was weird. LOL. Good stuff, more info to divert my train of thought…ta muchly.
