The numbers that Hurley uses are just random numbers that make up the winning numbers in the mega lottery. If time travel is possible then it is possible that these numbers were being given to Hurley to ensure that he was to win the lottery amd be on the flight. It may be that it is this 160 million that is being used by the Hanso Foundation, Dharma Initiative to fund their work.

So maybe Leonard is given the humbers simply to imprint the numbers into Hurley’s brain. Leonard seems more drugged than crazy and his response to Hurley that he should not have played the numbers is a response that leads Hurley downunder to hear more lies about the numbers.
Maybe the accidents that follow the win are not so accidental. The death of the Grandfather, maybe he would have died with or without the lottery win. The fires in the house and factory, maybe these were neither accidental but man made to fuel Hurley’s belief that the numbers are cursed.
Leonard telling Hurley about Australia and the story he found there, again to fuel his belief that the numbers are cursed. Using the numbers to win the lottery sounds reasonable but to believe that they could be used to win a bean counting contest. Not likely. Yet Hurley wants to believe that the numbers are cursed and this desire prevents him from critically thinking about the story. A story that is not likely but one that Hurley wants to hear.
What is set up for Hurley is the reinforcement both verbally and subliminally so that two event happen Hurley wins the lottery and Hurley is on the flight 815.
The numbers are not cursed, they are simply the winning lottery numbers and for some reason it is vital that these numbers are given to Hurley. Somehow these numbers and Hurley beief in their power will lead him to do something important on the island. Maybe at a point in time Hurley will react to an event and do something, some action that no one else would do, as only Hurley believes in the curse of the numbers. And this action may make all the difference.

i like it, i like a lot of this theory but i dont think the d i would get a lot done with 180 mil i would have thought their budget would be hundreds of billions.Interesting tho.
Interesting.. I’m not 100% sold, but i could definitely see most of this adding up. I do think Hurley’s relationship with the numbers is going to come up in the future, they do have to finish the story right? And there will be much rejoicing.
But what about Sam Toomey? He was a person so affected by the numbers that he blew his own head off.
And you take Leonard’s part in this for granted. He willingly went into an asylum, repeating the numbers interminably, just so Hurley would use them to win the lottery?
That is a very god point raised about Sam Toomey. However we have no real evidence that Sam Toomey even existed or that he won a big prize guessing the number of beans. I believe that this was misinformation given to Hurley so that he would believe the numbers to be cursed. I belive that Hurley has to be on the island and has to believe that these numbers are cursed.
I think that Leonard has been brainwashed/drugged so as to play a role in getting the numbers to Hurley. This theory works on the assumption that time travel is possible and that what is happening to the group is a result of some wide arching strategy to correct some anomaly that has taken place before.
I like it and I think there is a lot of room to expand on it! However, I still think that the numbers are significant. Do you think that maybe Hanso foundation could have a hand in changing the lottery results on the week that Hurley played the lottery?
And maybe same thing has happened with Sam Toomey. Maybe he did not guess the number of beans correctly but he was told that he has. Maybe the organisers of both these contests were in it with Hanso foundation?
Someone would have to have put in the fix on the lottery for this theory to be true.
Just because Hurley played the numbers does not mean that the lottery will pull them, and make him a winner. Maybe Hurley was playing the numbers for years . . .
Anyway, I thought Hurley was done withe the curse. 1st Rousseau believing they are cursed was a milestone and 2nd Hurley himself “making his own luck” by fixing the Dharma van.
i defintly like the idead of them all being there for a reason but to say that somehow all the events that lead to hurley finding out about those numbers what soley to have him get to the island is foolish. like how could you devise a plan that would be executed so perfectly when living a life like hurleys is 1 in a billion. theres no way that someone could have made hurley hear those numbers and make hurley show up to that exact gas station to play those exact numbers and to have all those events that led to him leaving for australia to happen. just really sit back and think about it. foolish.
Yes Deni the idea is foolish, I agree. The only way that one can win a lottery is to have a 1 in a billion chance. On the day before the lottery is drawn there are millions of possible winning combinations after the draw there is only 1 winning combination. For this foolish theory to work you need to have had one time stream where Hurley did not win the lottery and then with time travel ability go back and ensure that Hurley does win the lottery.
Why is Hurley on the island? Only the future will tell but I believe that there is a reason why Hurley is there and that it is not due to coincidence or cursed numbers. Someone or some group has been directing Hurley’s life so that he ends up on the island with a belief in the cursed numbers theory. Why, only time will tell, or the remaining 48 episodes.
I guess they set up the meteor kill the reporter too?
