“The world is changing, Mr Cloke”
— Dishyvaeda
Theory. After leaving the island, Magnus Hanso would have eventually made it home to Holland. He would have returned to the island several times, with one or more larger ships, to mine out the iron ore. This would have devastated the landscape as well as Jacob’s vision. But Jacob and his people resisted Hanso and his new crew. After a confrontation, Hanso was killed at the Black Rock.
Storyline. After sailing south-west for 16 weeks, Hanso, Aldric reached the east coast of Australia. Magnus hoped he could find help from a Dutch company once they had reached Sydney. He had sufficient money from the Black Rock’s coffers for them to live on, but not for passage home. As soon as they arrived in Sydney harbour, Hanso noticed a large building with the name Carstensz along its side. Hanso knew his maritime history of Dutch explorers. Hartog in 1608, Tasman in 1615, and Carstensz in 1623 had all pioneered trading routes and charted Australian coastal waters. The Dutch owners welcomed them.
The Eliza is reluctantly sold to pay for passage home on the next ship to Europe. One year after leaving the island, Hanso is reunited with his overjoyed family. The rock samples are analysed at the Hanso Science Foundation. Because of increasing commercial demand, they were only looking at the quality of the iron, and for traces of known precious metals. They were not looking for new elements. The industrial revolution worldwide was accelerating, and the demand for quality iron ore was assured. Certain that the island would also yield other precious metals, the Hanso family decided to exploit it for its riches. Magnus was asked to set up the new Hanso Pacific Mining Company. He would need a large cargo ship adapted to carrying iron ore, but it would take 2 years to build. This would give him time to recruit and train a crew ready for the challenges of the island. He would also spend time with his family, and write an account of his adventures. His journals contained coded instructions of how to find the island.
Aldric now had to endure the gradual return of his ailments. He longs to return to the island for the sake of his health, and to fulfil a feeling of destiny that the island has given him. Meanwhile he must pretend that he is loyal to the Hansos.
4 years after the captain had left the island, Jacob,s people saw a large ship appear suddenly on the horizon. The ‘Verloran Eiland’ anchors close to shore. Hidden in the ship are machinery and equipment for harvesting the black rock, and some armed mercenaries to ensure the cooperation of the islanders. Jacob meets Hanso on the beach. Aldric looks to be in poor health, but is understandably happy to be back. He manages to warn Jacob of Hanso’s long term plans, nothing less than the total exploitation of the island. Hanso demands to know where the surviving slaves are. Jacob tells Hanso that no-one on the island is a slave and none wish to leave.
The captain demands the return of his cargo, by force if necessary, pointing out his tough looking crew. But he is unnerved by a whispering sound and turns to see Jacob’s people emerging from the forest, in a show of strength. For a brief moment he sees an apparition of Eliza alongside them. She smiles and beckons. He gathers his thoughts and turns back to Jacob.
Hanso does not want bloodshed, he needs workers for his mining operation. He agrees to a stand-off and asks Jacob to negociate. They set off for the Black Rock to talk, but on the way Magnus hears more whispering and sees Eliza’s spirit again. Visibly shaken, Hanso accuses Jacob of trickery. But Jacob seems genuinely pleased that the captain is being spoken to by the island.
Hanso becomes irritated. He lies again to Jacob, insisting that he only intends to take one cargo of iron ore. He offers a bribe for his assistance with the mining project. “The world is changing Mr Cloke”. To which Jacob replies “For the worse, Mr Hanso,” and refuses to cooperate. The captain pulls a pistol and points it at Jacob. Hanso’s blind ambition has prevented him from noticing how Jacob and others from the Black Rock have barely aged a day in four years. Neither does he see the wisps of black smoke darting between the trees behind him. It is only when a nearby tree is demolished with a single invisible blow, followed by a loud roar, that the captain turns around.
They are transfixed by the sight of a column of black smoke, images flickering within, as it appears to study them both. A slow, almost mechanical growling and wheezing sound is heard from within the smoke, and they see glimpses of their pasts. But there are more disturbing pictures, a barren dark landscape, a beach full of unmarked graves. Hanso thinks this is a trick of the forest, which he intends to destroy. Jacob now knows for sure the future he must prevent. Hanso points the pistol towards the smoke and fires. The black smoke seizes him, lifts him high in the air, and throws him side to side against the trees. He is thrust down onto ‘Black Rock’ where impact with the ship’s wheel fatally injures him. His last words to Jacob “Eliz…I see now…Jac….save man….”
Jacob’s people had learned how to move silently through the forest, either to avoid the beast, or when hunting. They are easily able to capture Hanso’s unprepared crew and commandeer the Verloran Eiland.
Jacob’s people now had a ship which could be used for journeys away from the island. Aldric had memorised Hanso’s method of navigating back to the island, so Jacob asked if he would become Captain Parther. Aldric was smiling contentedly, and agreed. As long as he could spend most of his time on the island, he knew he would have his health.
His time off the island would require a new identity, so that he would not attract the attention of the powerful Hansos on his travels. His shrewd mind rearranges the letters in his name. He explains this idea to Jacob, who is amused that his trusted advisor Aldric Parther was now to be known as Richard Alpert.

Yes, very interesting indeed. Epic, in fact.
