if Desmond knows about the map, why did he seem so suprised when Locke told him that they found another hatch (station)

…at the end of season 2( Live Together, Die Alone), in a flashback Kelvin shows Desmond how to trigger a lockdown and shows him the blast door map that Radzinsky, and the Kelviin have been painting of the island.
But here’s the thing that bugs me…if Desmond knows about the map, why did he seem so suprised when Locke told him that they found another hatch (station) on the island when Desmond washed back to the island? Even if he never saw the map (because of the lack of black light), wouldn’t he still be aware that there are different stations on the island?
Anyway…if anybody knows the answer to this question, or if it has been discussed before, I’d love to hear from you!
Potentially Desmond would never have seen the Blast Door Map. The way I see it, the fluorescent lights that were triggered only occur during a genuine lockdown procedure. This is the only way to view the map. I also presume that during a genuine lockdown procedure the ‘hotwire’ trick for opening and closing the Blast Door doesn’t work (that’s a heck of a presumption, I know).
As such, in a genuine lockdown, one of the two men would have to be in the computer room to enter the code - and thus wouldn’t get to see the map. I figure, since Inman was the one that was maintaining the map and exploring the outside world, he would be the one that got to stay with it and see it properly.
Nice cover AC though it is annoying to think Des never asked what was on the map.
I’ve always struggled with the purpose of a lockdown whether it be “genuine” or contrived…
I can see one possible reason for a contrived lockdown as being to provide protection from an invasion from the hostiles, but what circumstances are necessary for it to occur “genuinely”?
Is it to protect the equipment and the occupant in the event the numbers aren’t entered as we are led to believe in “Lockdown” (it certainly didn’t protect the equipment from the failsafe event).
And if that is the case, then why wasn’t Desmond locked out after he accidentally killed Inman? Did he make it back and enter the numbers in the nick of time?
Maybe I need to watch the Kelvin and Desmond episodes… again.
Sham - the requirement of a genuine lockdown is actually kind of simple. It’s to stop Dharma Initative people being outside when there’s a food drop. Having a lockdown is a way of ensuring that people aren’t roaming around the jungle vicinity when a great big pallet of food supplies drops out of the skies. That’s the procedural explanation. To stop death by food drop. I believe the Blast Door Map makes mention about fatalities due to PRD in relation to this.
(I have my doubts about whether there actually is a genuine food drop in the sense that it’s parachuted in - but keeping Dharma Workers locked down, if there is more to it, helps sustain this mystery.)
I always wondered if Dharma simply didn’t want the workers to know where the food drops were coming from. What if they are dropped from the sky—apparently from nothing? That would freak out the workers. As for the how, could be alternate reality stuff, or simply cloaking of the island resulted in a barrier where they couldn’t see out either.
Heh, “death by food drop”. I like it. :)
Seems like pretty extreme measures considering the are already underground. Wouldn’t a simple “Hey, were making a food drop” suffice?
Somethings stinks in Denmark. Typical Dharma slieght of hand.
Would the genuine Lockdown, meant for the food drop, also expose the island for the time alotted to drop the food from a plane?
Just a thought…
AngeloComet,
Actually, I am presuming that Desmond never saw the map (I guess you didn’t read that part of my post..lol), but he should still know what the map is of since Kelvin does it right in front of him.
What’s the point of making a map if the island is deserted? So as far as Desmond is concerned, even if he doesn’t know where on the island the other stations are, he should at least know they exist.
Why would Desmond know of the other stations? He is not part of DI. The map of the island is invisible. Kelvin was sort of tight-lipped. Where would information on other hatches have come from?
