i’ve got 2 kinda sorta theories about ms. hawking, that could almost be joined together to make one theory (if you like, i won’t force you)
so…
1) ms. hawking was brother campbell’s lover. there may be significance in her being the person to tell desmond that he can’t be with penny & needs to dedicate himself to pushing the button. she almost seemed sad at the time, as if maybe she’d lived the same kind of heart-ache. my hot tip is that she was forced to part with brother campbell in the same way, so she could be a time-hopper & keep willful people like desmond on track… or something.
and…
2) perhaps ms. hawking is actually amelia earhart. she found the island, or became somehow involved with dharma after her plane crashed/was lost, & she ended up being this time-travelling old lady we all love so very much.
now…
(to join it all together in one neat package) ms. hawking is amelia earhart & brother campbell is fred noonan. they may or may not have been lovers, but they’re both in on the “send desmond to the island” conspiracy.
well there it is. not very well formed, probably already been brought up by someone & possibly easily refuted. i don’t really care, because i just thought of it & decided to write it down before i forgot. so there it is.

oo I loved her too! I hope we get to see Ms. Hawking again. (somebody THAT mysterious HAS to be brought up again, right?!) I hope so.
I think the first one is more in the right direction than the second though. I don’t think she’s Amelia.
I’ve gotta give you credit just for coming up with something I’ve never heard of and certainly never thought of! (My heart usually sinks when I see theories regarding Ms. Hawking; dreading a complete re-tread of old ideas, well-flogged, rolled out as though brand new).
It’s 8 in the moring here for me, though. Thinking of Hawking and Campbell as lovers isn’t making my coffee go down well!

Simply, Desmond being kicked out of the monastery led to him meeting Penny - that was important, that was “his fate”.
Amelia Earhart theory sounds a lot like the “hatch” reproductive theory!
haha, angelo i didn’t meant to make you queasy! i was implying that they USED to be lovers, not that they still go at it… but now i’m queasy too.
