This is just some ideas I’ve had after watching 4.5.

When the hatch exploded, desmond got hit with a huge blast of electromagnetic energy, which from what faraday said causes the persons mind to moves to different times.

when des first got hit (when the hatch exploded), I think the dose was so strong, his mind was sent back to when he and penny were together and he was able to maintain himself there because of it. After his mind found it’s way back to the present (the island), the dose of ele-mag energy was still strong enough, that he was able to have visions of the future.

Just an idea, but possibly charlie was his constant in this instance. He met him in the past (singing outside penny’s dad office, i think). It this is the case, maybe that’s why all his future visions were about charlie. maybe he had to keep his constant alive to stop himself getting nosebleeds, then diein. Maybe because des didn’t know charlie very well, he needed to be continually near charlie to keep his mind together, where as with penny, he madly in love with, so the one phone call should sustain him.

Continuing on, when des is in the plane and they go through the storm (I’m goin to guess theres a permament ele-mag storm surrounding and protecting the island. And the only weak point is along the 325 degree bearing), des is hit with a another dose of ele-mag energy, enough to force his mind out of it’s timeline, but not enough to sustain him in that timeline. The continued shock to his brain of being thrown backwards and forwards in time is what kills these people, not the timejumps themselves.

if there is a ele-mag barrier round the island ( that makes people time jump), that would explain why the island is so hard to find. The ele-mag barrier would make any electic devices e.g radar, satilites malfunction, keeping the island hidden. And anyone who did happen to find it would timejump alot and then die.

Reading some of the other theories, I agree with them that the mysterious illness the island is meant to have is this time-jumping one, and the cure is that yellow serum we see so much of. This explains why des wasn’t affected when he crashed on the island in his boat. The army guy gave him an injection of the serum.

Last thought. Everyone on the plane must have got at least a small dose of ele-mag energy, when the plane flew through the ele-mag barrier . Alot of people think the plane was supposed to go to the island, just bad luck that des didn’t push the buttons in time, so the plane crashed rather than land safely. Anyway my thought is that all the visions everyones had of people or things from their past e.g kate’s horse, Hugo’s pal dave, Jack’s dad. Are caused by the small dose of ele-mag they got. The dose could have been so small, that their minds stay safely in their timelines, but when they think about some event from their past strong enough, they bring up visions of them, strong enough that other people see them too.

well that’s it, thanks for reading my rambling. please comment.

Nice, i agree with you about it all. The one thing I keep thinking about after 4.5 is Desmond’s first attempt to escape from the island. Remember after he shot the Swan computer and he fled in his sailboat. How did he just get turned around and end up sailing back to the island? How did he not get hurt from the ele-mag barrier surrounding the island? I’m assuming that he didn’t get the flashtime ability that time because he hadn’t yet blown up the swan, soo if you haven’t been subjected to large doses of radiation or electromagnetism you just get turned around by the ele-mag barrier?

I concur about Charlie. I posted on this this morning (http://lost-theories.com/theories/2008/feb/29/charlie-was-desmond-1st-consta/) although you had a slightly different take on his keeping Charlie alive. Cheers.

Sandamtodd- sorry didn’t see your post. That’s the problem with us all watchin lost on different nights lol

thinking about it some more-if we’re both right and charlie was desmond’s constant. Why was the universe course correcting itself and tryin to off charlie. Maybe des is the anomaly (cause of the time-jumping) and the universe offed charlie to try and get rid of des as well. what’d you think?

No worries brotha. I am not sure, but what we do know is Charlie is definately a factor in Desmond’s life - Past and Present. To what end, I’m gonna have to think on that. One thing I do know is Des is a way bigger part of the story than I ever gave his character credit for [until now].

I think that Des could not leave the island because he didn’t follow the exact same bearing that he used to enter it. In the helicopter he was not piloting and exited on a different course that shocked his brain into the whole time bouncing thing. He needed his constant to set his brain right. Could be wrong but thats what makes sense to me.

This is a great theory!!! I am not 100% sure about every part of the theory, but I think each section is very thought-provoking and plausible in their own right.

I love the idea that the visions people have on the island are residue effects from their exposure.

I wonder if Jacob has any connection/ exposure to electomagnetism.
