As per usual, we, the views, continue to be LOST. 4X5 only raised more questions. Perhaps drawing some distincitions in the sand will help us find our way……
First Distinction: Island Causes mind-traveling vs. Faraday’s Experiments
The Characters Minkowski and Faraday illustrate that the ability to mind-travel is not limited to only Desmond.
Question: Is Faraday’s ability the result of his own experiments or the island and does this matter?
Second Distincition: Past & Future mind-traveling vs. Only Past Mind-traveling
Faraday’s experiment with the rat shows the viewers that the rat died because it was going into the future. Does the rat go into the past as well? Maybe I missed or forgot something Faraday said in that scene. Comparing this with what we think we know of Desmond, after the hatch explosion, Desmond’s ability to mind-travel takes him to the future and to the past. He sees Charlie’s deaths in the future and in the past he meets Charlie singing in the streets, and he knows he has done this before, plus the other examples in that episode, ect. I don’t think it’s clear about the rat going into the past and the future like Desmond can ON The Island. (unless I forgot something, I will have to download this episode for sure!!!). However, this can be explained by some of you who have posted arguments that Charlie was Desmond’s constant. That is a credible assumption based on the examples above.
Question: Did the “storm” cause Desmond’s ability to go into the future to stop?
Third Distinction: Present Memory vs. Present Memory Wipe Out
Desmond going through the “storm” caused his memory to be wiped-clean in the present when he returns from the past but this did NOT happen ON The Island.
Question: Does it matter when mind-traveling off The Island compared to being on The Island? Clearly in Desmond’s case, the answer is Yes. So I pose this question. If Faraday can mind-travel as well, why didn’t he have his memory wiped clean when he mind traveled on the island i.e. the cards with Charlotte? I revert the reader back to the first question. Is Faraday’s ability the result of his own experiments or the island and does this matter?
