It seems like a big manipulation to me.

This seems some what inconsistent to me. Why didn’t Desmond start having problems when he sailed in originally. Apparently surface boats have terrible problems with the “back-flashing” issue.

Ok, there are apparently 3-4 persons we know of who have had the flashing problem, and 2 died -two freighter guys, Faraday, and Desmond.

Desmond arrived onhis boat. And the Miskinski guy tried the same thing a 3 years later, but suffered serious problems. Desmond didn’t experience any initial issues . Why is this? I have two possible explanations. First, somehow Desmond randomly came on the perfect heading to avoid getting screwed up, where as the other guys didn’t get an exact course, only close. Second, Desmond began taking the yellow serum after he got there, and it took the freighter guys some time to wander back to the freighter.

I think the serum explanation to be more plausible, because we see it being administered to Miskinski while on the boat. (That drug could have been something different, like a sedative, but looked the same to me). The doc would not administer it to Desmond, which was odd if this is the case, because he seem honestly concerned for Desmond. Why not give him the serum too? .

Desmond’s previous “flashes” have been all over the place, and nothing like the one he had in episode 4.05. It was odd, however, that he was flashing back and forth to a time before, but both time lines were moving forward. He wasn’t flashing randomly, in fact he was flashing at the just right moments in which he could link up with Penny to save his life. He also flashed in sequential order in both timelines, allowing him to keep things somewhat straight. Yet, it seem like the show was trying to tell us they were out of control b/c they were speeding up. That just didn’t seem to be the case to me.

It’s also odd that none of his flashes have been meaningless. You would think that if they were random, then most would be without meaning. He had the future flashes to save Charlie and get off the island - but those were only visions. He had flash back, where his consciousness did travel, and he actually met the woman who knew all about what was going on. No matter what, it’s all strange. It seems like a big manipulation to me.

I also think Faraday is having problems based on the same sort of radiation. His exposure was much weaker and just occurred over long repetitive exposure to his head. (as Desmond pointed out in the episode itself). Desmond’s was an intense jolt when the hatch imploded and then a smaller one going through the storm (that didn’t even effect Frank or Sayid). Apparently, Faraday’s brain was altered enough to give him some of this flashing, but then left him brain damaged, and prone to a huge amount of conscious memory loss (shown from the cards).

This is one of the first total outright leaps into sci-fi for the show, and I’m not sure it all works out to be totally consistent.

You are forgetting one big thing and that is that Daniel said either by radiation or by electromagnetism. Now correct me if im wrong but wasnt Desmond the one who took the full impact of the electromagnetic waves when the hatch blew up which started his whole flash back time travel incident. Thats why he didnt have it when he initially came to the island.

Desmond was knocked unconscious while on his boat and washed up to the shore of the island. Juliet, while being transported to the island, was given a sedative during the trip. I would not be surprised if consciousness was key in being exposed to time flashing. The whole idea seems to wrap around being able to mentally handle the instability of flashing back and forth, but if you are unconscious you are completely unaware of the shift in the elements/time or whatever happens when you stray off course, so maybe it doesn’t affect you.

On the other hand, Flight 815 crashed onto the island. Naomi parachuted onto the island. People are getting in without necessarily being on course (and without having the timeflash affect them).

Maybe this is an issue more so with leaving the island and not so much coming to it?
