This idea is based on information in Solarchap’s “Cancer and Immortality” theory. (I no longer see the option of choosing this feature when posting a theory, it seems to have disappeared.)

It has long been speculated that people on the island do not age. We know that Richard has not appeared to age, but we wondered why Ben aged. Given that we now know he goes off island a lot, that would be an explanation.

If the island halts the aging process (for reasons I don’t know and won’t go into), this is great for physically mature adults, but not for infants/children. Their cells aren’t just maintaining themselves, their cells are actually needing to grow. If they don’t grow, what happenes to them? Condemned to always be an infant? Or maybe to die?

We know the “others” kidnap the young. We know they considered it crucial to keep Aaron “vaccinated”. We know that Charlie gave Claire vaccine that she has been using on Aaron. We know that supplies have been cut off, and therefore vaccine. Goodwin and Ethan aren’t around to either go get more or to synthesize it, and Juliet does not necessarily know how to synthesize it just because she’s a doctor. Even if she did, it requires supplies, and supplies are cut off.

I don’t think the vaccinne was a hoax. I think it was crucial in order to allow continued aging/growth. That is why the others took Emma and Zack, Alex, unborn Aaron. Now they have a limited supply and no certain prospects of getting more. Maybe what they have is not enough for all of the children on the island.

Aaron is the youngest and fastest growing, the biggest drain on a limited resource. If it’s a choice between both Zack and Emma, or Aaron, likely the remaining vaccine is already delegated to accomdate 2 persons rather than one. What this would mean is that if Aaron is to grow up, or perhaps even to live, he needs to leave the island.

Claire would definitely want him to leave. The question is why she didn’t leave with him. At this time, there are many possibilities for that, and we need more information, so cannot say.

ozzig, best explanation I’ve seen so far! Makes perfect sense and I agree we need more info to know what happened to Claire.

    +1

ozzig, I really like this idea,it could very easily turn out to be a real possible explanation.

Now on the subject of the injections, there have been some things posted about Ben, stitching up Sayid, after he was shot. I guess he might have, but what I saw was him injecting something into him at the site of the wound. What do you think that might have been…..+1 :)

Is Aaron one of the Oceanic 6?

  5. ozzig Feb 26, 2008 11:18 a.m. Comment: 5

Annie and KSJ : Thanks ! Figured I might as well throw in my penny’s worth…

I’m not sure about Sayid’s injection, it could have been as simple as an antibiotic to prevent infection, but with LOST you never know.

el chupanebre: I don’t know. He could be, but I think the majority feel he is the +1 of the Oceanic 6+1.

    Haha… I didn’t know there was a +1 to the Oceanic 6. Cheers ozzig.

+1 - nice expansion on why Kate took Aaron for his own good

el chupanebre: So I hear anyway, it’s all over the board here and there, the validity I can’t attest to, as I always get my info from this board. I could see him being a +1 since he gets to sit in someones lap.

Ben’s dad aged as well… I don’t think the island keeps people from aging. There is most likely something special about Richard. He recruited Ben… and then when Locke was w/ the others he extended a hand to him as well. I think he is pulling more strings then we know. He may be a step ahead of Ben and Locke both. Maybe Richard is an original inhabinant and helps to guide people in towards their destiny. Why is everyone obsessed with Walt’s aging? The writers say time travel is involved. You dont think it’s possible Walt, with his special abilities, time traveled to help Locke because he knew Locke needed to live for certain things to happen. It seems like the puppets and the puppet masters.

Ozzig, This is definitely a new twist, and one I like. I do agree that there was a need for a vaccine, and your theory is quite plausible in that regard.

    Good thoughts! +1

Nice theory, but what about Ben’s daughter?

  13. PaxTzu Feb 26, 2008 2:06 p.m. Comment: 13

If children cannot age on the island, what about Ben and Alex (and Ben’s father Roger? He certainly seemed to age quite a bit.)

If taking the vaccine is what allows you to age, why did all the members of the DI take it?

Unless you’re suggesting that Daniel Roseau has been drinking vaccine for the last 16 years, shouldn’t she be a young woman?

ozzig im defintly diggin your theory and i think another thing to point out since people are throwing names out there that have aged on the island. those people that have aged werent born on the island like aaron was. so maybe since aaron was born on the island this does hault the aging process which would then force the baby off the island. but like you said why the hell isnt claire with the baby off the island, guess well have to wait and find out. +UNO

I can actually see this being a big possibility. A big+1!

  16. drugdoc Feb 26, 2008 2:27 p.m. Comment: 16

I agree with previous comments. There were a lot of people taking vaccine that didn’t need to worry about aging, and we did see that people on the island have aged (presumably without vaccine). Maybe the island effects individuals differently. One thing seems certain though, time moves slower on the island than off.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

I was going with the idea that Alex was kidnapped as an infant so that the vaccine could be administered to her for all these years. She’s now at an age where she might no longer need it. (And she was born on the island)

As for Roussau, I have no idea how old she was when she was pregnant with Alex, I don’t believe she ever indicated an age of herself at the time of her arrival. She is older, but not THAT old, she could have had a later life pregnancy.

As for Ben’s father, I don’t know. Perhaps he worked on the other island and this didn’t apply? Then again, even if the island prevents normal aging (or simply ultra slowed aging), that might not mean it can reverse the effects of years of continued hard drinking.

Others have aged, but haven’t some adults also taken this vaccine? If you don’t want to be eternally young, just take the vaccinne and go ahead and continue aging.

Then again, they likely did not know what the effect of the vaccine was. Kelvin, Desmond, all they knew was that it was to ward off “illness”, so they took it. Maybe Dharma didn’t want their employees to stop aging and therefore know about the island’s effect. Such knowledge could turn valuable employees into worthless or greedy employees (think the likes of Roger Linus) who could be a security threat, trying to get the secrets of the island to the highest bidder.

Just thinking of what I would do if I were head honcho at such a facility, I would NOT let the employees cease aging and i would create whatever lie necessary to ensure they took the vaccine that kept them aging normally. Not nice, but smart.

I think the opposite. Who have we seen age since arriving on the island? Ben, Walt, Roger, Aaron (assuming it’s the same Aaron, which I do). Who have we seen not age? Richard. Who are the only people we have seen (for sure) off the island after having been there? Richard, Ethan, Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Ben, and Naomi’s crew (I can’t remember all their names).

It is possible that when you leave the island you stop aging. Not when you arrive, but when you leave. It could also have to do with how you get there and how you get off. Of course, for this to be true they would have to be on the island for another 18 months or so to account for Aaron’s age. Maybe that is why Jack doesn’t want to see him and why Kate keeps him away from everyone (the court, her mother) because he is a little boy who doesn’t age.
