I’m pretty much convinced that Ben’s “man on that boat” just took over the ship…
— vegarover
After watching episode 4x02 (Confirmed Dead) for the second time, I’m now convinced that The Others are now in control of the freighter off-shore.
From the end of season 3 to the beginning of episode 4x02, its been established that a man by the name of Minkowski is the main contact on-board the freighter. At the end of 4x02, when Miles calls the ship and a woman by the name of Regina answers the phone, and he seems agitated and tells her to put Minkowski on the phone, re-enforces this fact.
Now the reason why I think the freighter is now under control of The Others is because the only things Regina says is (about Minkowski) “he can’t come to the phone right now”, which she says twice, and, “I’ve got to go.”
I’m pretty much convinced that Ben’s “man on that boat” just took over the ship…maybe there was a struggle and Minkowski is knocked unconscious or even killed, and Regina is now being held at gunpoint. The phone call comes in from Miles and not wanting too seem suspicious, the intruder tell Regina to answer it, but not to say anything or he’ll hurt her. That’s why her voice sounds flustered and she seems to want to get off the phone as quickly as possible.
However, I’m also wondering who Ben’s “man on that boat” could be. At first I kept thinking it was Michael…because at the end of season 2 Ben told Michael to sail along a specific bearing and “he would find rescue.” But the fact that Michael kept asking Ben if he would really get picked up just by following a bearing leads me to believe he wasn’t in on the freighter infiltration. I still think Ben may have pointed him in the direction of the freighter, but for what purpose, I just don’t know.
So, that really makes me wonder…will the spy that’s on the freighter be somebody we already know, or will it be somebody, or something else?
Hey vega, good point. Ben is one crafty dude. And Ben’s confidence about having a man onboard coupled with the Miles phone call with Regina probably means the freighter is in trouble!
Hmmmm…that is a lot to think about. I am about to rewatch the episode. I will come back and discuss it with you. +1 for the thought food.
I’m liking this vegarover. I might re-watch it once more to see.
this makes a lot of sense since it now looks like the only way out of the island is the helicopter…
Oooo, nice. That explains why we only have six survivors. Only six made on the helicopter…but what about the fuel issue. They are almost out of fuel.
Nice theory Vega……..I can’t see any other reason regina would be so short during that call, and like someone else stated, what the hell else would Minkowski have going on in the middle of the ocean that he couldn’t come to the phone?
maybe he was getting firewood
or maybe he wasn’t…
rag..i think they can re fuel once on the freighter, doesn’t really explain why there are only 6, maybe they could only make a couple trips? i have to watch 4x02 again, i’m pretty LOST.
I love this idea veg - haven’t heard it before. The people on the freighter are out to get Ben; Ben’s out to get the people on the freighter! Ben is still one scary dude!
At first I thought Ben’s man on the boat was Michael as well - but I don’t think so. Michael may be on the boat, but I don’t think he’s “the man on the boat.”
One interesting note however, if Regina was being held at gun point, she should have used the code word and asked about her sister! Just a thought.
Dang vegarover!
Two great theories in one day!
+1!!!!
Maybe the Oceanic 6 end up being the 6 people that Ben considers the biggest threat to him and the Others.
Jack-Leader of Losties, no further explanation needed.
Kate-Great tracker, tough, knows how to handle a weapon, and if she goes with Jack, he may not have any other reason to go back.
Hurley-Doesn’t seem like much of a threat, but once Ben thinks he can see Cabin/Jacob…maybe he is a huge threat!
I know who the other 3 Oceanic 6 are, but I’m not going to “spoil” it for anybody…but I think they are threats to Ben/Others as well.
Love the theory, but I’m still hung up on the fact that one freighter had two helicopters on board. Very fishy.
This is from Lostpedia, i think it makes alot of sense considering the picture Naomi had of Desmond and her knowledge about Penny:
“Ben’s man on the boat is Kelvin. The Others found Kelvin, who was not dead, on the rocks after his altercation with Desmond. Kelvin then began to work for Ben. Kelvin being the man on the boat would explain why Naomi knew about Desmond and had his photo, as the boat is not Penny’s. Kelvin might be feeding the people on the boat information about the island to gain their trust so he can provide Ben with the best information. It is also plausible to assume that a man with Kelvin’s military experience would be recruited or apply for such a reconnaissance mission as is being conducted by the people on the freighter. It’s also possible that Kelvin was working with the Others prior to Desmond’s shipwreck as it appears no Dharma members survived the purge and the only other person on the island to claim they were Dharma, Mikhail, was lying. ”
vegarover,
It is a good theory, but I have some questions. Why, if it was so accessible to just “take over” the freighter in the first place, is Ben so upset about the whole thing? As a matter of fact, what else bothers me is that Ben seemed so surprised about this encounter, when he knew, through his contact, that the freighter was there. Unless he knew about it all along? Surely he would know that Naomi was coming to the Island, or was trying to find it. Given everything that he knows about, well, obviously Charlotte, and probably every other person on the freighter, that he was so adamant to stop Jack from contacting it. Again, something isn’t right. If the Others could have taken over the freighter, why not just do that first, then it wouldn’t matter how much they tried to contact it, right?
Makes perfect sense to me vegarover.
prosaicdark-
perhaps Ben’s man on the boat waited until there were less people left so that he/she would have a better chance of taking over.
good point vegarover!

Awesome theory. My first thought was that it was Mikhail who was Ben’s “man on the boat” as we hadn’t seen him since Through the Looking Glass.
However, I do like this theory about Kelvin being on the frieghter which would mean that Ben a lot of prior notice somehow or perhaps he planned it?
I remember thinking how interesting that Sawyer says to Locke in Confirmed Dead: “It’s only a matter of time before he [Ben] gets us Johnny, and I bet he’s already figured out how he’s going to do it.” We all know that his immediate plans were to kill Charlotte but I’m wondering if this is going to be prophetic in the bigger picture somehow.
Excellent idea vega!
Wow vegarover! +1
I’ve gotta think that Ben’s spy has been with the freighter people for a long time. It can’t be someone we know.
does anyone else think that “Regina” sounded a lot like Naomi? Or has this paranormal stuff as of late just started to take over? haha
Maybe Regina really is Naomi’s sister!
More likely that the freighter is part of the rogue Hanso Foundation effort to alter the core values of the Valenzetti Equation… which means that it will release a deadly virus on the island. The people behind the effort may include Dr. Mittlewerk, Sun’s father Paik (whose company built the ship), and the Widmore Corporation.
This would account for both Ben’s and Locke’s belief that contacting the freighter will spell doom for the islanders.
Oh, and another poster posited that Jacob=Alvar Hanso. Makes sense to me!
