This is a deduction from a number of sources…..
OK…I have been deducing this and am sure that this is correct.
DON’T read on if you don’t want to know who is in the coffin.
- The funeral service Jack attended took place in a primarily black area of Los Angeles.
- The important point here, is the transcript of what was written on the news cutting that Jack was reading in Through The Looking Glass.
QUOTE:The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 am in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.
Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim’s loft.
Concerned for tenants’ safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.
According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son.
Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.” Source: The Fuselage unquote
- We know from the Lost Spoliers site, that the bulk of Episode 8 of this series 4, was shot in New York, and it features Michael. This tells us that Michael is the one in New York - it all ties together. Michael is the only guy I know that would leave behind a teenaged son.
Using that information, I have deduced it was Michael in the coffin, and Jack was upset - NOT because he liked Michael, but because Michael was the only one who could give him the co-ordinates to get back to the island. I suggest that Michael changed his name to John Lantham after his return from the island.
Now the news cutting says it was suicide - it also says a commotion was heard. My theory is Michael a.k.a John Lantham, was killed because he was going to allow the Oceanic 6 to know information on how to get back to the island.
Also, as a side note…John Lantham was a famous artist, and of course, Michael is an artist too.

i like how you mapped it out. the only problem i have with it is that the funeral director asked jack if he was “family”. jack = while, michael = not white lol. i doubt he meant through marriage. besides, i’m sure michael had family at home that would care enough to attend his funeral.
i posted a theory a few weeks ago that would pin claire as the one in that coffin. it was outlandish but i figure the writers won’t make it that easy to figure out. i don’t think that article tells the whole story in my opinion. everyone seems to think it is sawyer, locke, or ben who’s dead in there but it’s got to be someone unexpected.
I agree, but I don’t think Michael was giving coordinates.
I think Michael escaped the island, but it wasn’t reported, he’s not one of the Oceanic 6. He started a new life under a new identity. The bad guys found him, interrogated/tortured/murdered him. There was no suicide.
Jack is mad at Michael for selling them all out to the Others, but Jack is not a hateful person. He & Michael still share a bond, they were both on the Island. It’s one less survivor in the real world for Jack to relate to. His death adds to Jack’s guilt and makes his real-world-life have even less meaning.
That makes more sense risebysin. I don’t think there is any doubt the body in that coffin is Michael, and it will be revealed aas such in episode 8 of this current series.
junge,
When the funeral director asks “friend or family,” Jack could fit into either of these — he could have been related through marriage.
I am not certain, but the evidence seems to be on Michael in the coffin. Plus, remember that, if it is Michael, he has taken a different name (see the screen shots of the obituary on Lostpedia): so his mother or other family members may not know he is dead. It is also likely that, when he returned home, he took advantage of the fact that everyone believed the survivors of 815 dead, and created a new identity (all to avoid, among other things, his infamous actions to get off the Island.)
I agree with this 110%

But only presents the question where is Walt?
Walt is on the island . maybe thats why he killed himself. he was being chased by walt´s figure like charlie did to hurley and was trying to find the island like jack is S3 finale, but was being unsuccessfull
I agree with risebysin,
He probably tried to start a new life secretly and he could have even committed suicide because he just couldn’t live under the pressure or for whatever reason.
But how he managed to get back apart from the oceanic 6 I’d like to know!
It’s a good one, probably he start a new live and in city:
1- walt with his gift start to see dead people from the island (hurley and dead’s charlie talk like) and rubber in michel face, and that make on micheal feel so guilty to suicide.
2- Walt kill his own father with his powers, remember he control birds to hits window , and on the island when walt is keeped by te others he was obligated to use the power for experimental res-search, (Look the missing pieces), he’s power can make him control other things with live.
3-the walt he take out the island is not really walt it’s a copy of him… that’s explain the oceanic flight under the sea, its a copy made by the magnetic anomalye when the plane fall….
Jin gets shot in a toy store in episode 6 so it might be him.
