I truly believe that many of us theorists have lost sight of what is really important with the show. We have become enthralled with things like time travel, parallel worlds, cloning, the orchid station, vortexes, electro-magnetic fields and their effects, etc.
We have forgotten that the show will not ultimately revolve around time travel, more about the characters and their endless struggles to survive, be rescued, get back to the island, deal with those they’ve LOST.
A lot of people are theorizing that Jack has been on the island before, or that Adam & Eve is someone that is currently alive, or that Ben is a time traveler as well. I think they will fade away from the time travel aspect making it an irrelevant issue, just as they have with previous themes (ie> the numbers, walt and aaron being special, even the smoke monster has faded out of existence/importance this season) I think that darlton have clearly illustrated that strange things do happen on the island.
The key is not what is causing these strange things, or who is behind them, or how do they happen. The key is what happens to the characters which we’ve grown to love or hate so much. They won’t answer what the smoke monster really is, but they may answer why Sayid is forced to kill for Ben. They won’t tell us where the island really is, or what Jacob really is, but they just might tell us how Jin and Claire die or live, how the oceanic six get off the island, and how those left on the island after the O6 survive or perish.
The first 3 seasons provided is with a scary and unclear setting, I believe this season and the 2 to follow will delve more into the destinies of our beloved characters (Jack, Locke, Ben, Kate, Sawyer, Jin, Claire, Aaron, Michael, Sun, Juliet, Hugo, Bernard & Rose, Desmond & Penelope).
+1. i agree with some of what you have said. i agree that the characters are the important aspect of the show. dartlon have said as much. they said that they spend 80% of there time talking about the characters and what to do with them, and onyl 20% of time on the mysteries.
BUT i dont agree that the smoke monster, jacob, time travel ect are unimportant and wont be answered. i think they will be be explained well, and will have a crucial role in lost - just not as important as the characters. :)
Thank you for your insight. I thought the things being dicussed were important (and interesting).
I realize now that I have lost my way and will try to do better.
Well I sort of agree, in that the characters playing out their parts in the story is essential and what makes Lost.
Although I do firmly believe that some of the bigger questions HAVE to be answered. There’s absolutely no way the cannot address what Smokey is, how it came to being and what will happen to it. Its been there since day 1 on everyone’s lips as a question and to simply ignoring it, would be like not revealing who shot JR. Similarly with Jacob’s cabin and other extrovert mysteries, these need explaining to give the show closure as well as some substance in that these mysteries weren’t just random events but are rational, explainable events that happened because of x,y and z in the Lost universe.
So whilst I agree that the character development is important, and is ultimately why we watch Lost, I think the writers owe us viewers the answers to the big questions in the end.
I think your right on some aspects, like certain concepts being phased out. Because, lets face it, the show is too tangly to be able to answer all questions in a manner that satisfies everyone. When the show ends we will be left with unanswered questions. Im sure of that, if not ill be very surprised.
However, im with belle13 on the point that while the show is about the characters and their journey, they cannot just ignore huge questions they have thrown at us. Like not explaining jacob, or the smoke or what not. That would be as bad as the show being a big dream. (Which is not going to happen)
+1 for posting the same though ive been having. That people are too concerned with the mysteries rather than the characters. We know that the characters are the important part of the show. The entire show is based on character developement from past, present and future perspectives and we cannot lose sight of that.
“They won’t tell us where the island really is, or what Jacob really is”
Umm, yeah they will.
It’s not JUST about the characters. If it was, they could have just written a story about a bunch of castaways having to survive on a deserted desert island.
The island and its mysteries are just as an important part of the show. It’s the reason people watch. It’s what has me hooked.
We’ve all been so very, very wrong.
I’ll condense the theory down for those you can’t be bothered to read it.
“The show is a soap opera - nothing more”
I agree that the island and its mysteries are important. But i do not think each mystery (smokey, jacob, time-difference, island location, the incident, christian shephard in the cabin) will be answered independently. I think they may be answered with an over-arching solution, such as: dharma experimented in an attempt to better the world, and in the process had a few failures/side effects.
JohnLockeLegend, the show at its most simplistic level, is ordinary people placed in extraordinary situations. It is the island and its mysteries which fuel the extraordinary on the show, but the absolute focus of the show is the characters and how they are effected by these extraordinary situations, not the situations themselves. Therefore the answers to these mysteries are not whats important, but what happens to our losties as a result of these mysteries that is important.
JLL and Shasty, you are both right. I look at it this way: ABC is a company, and all they really care about is making money and making money for their sponsors. Therefore, they have to provide a show that will satisfy those of us who have made Lost into a hobby/way of life/obsession, as well as the people like my husband, who views the show simply as the story of a group of people stranded on an island, and how they get home.
After everything they have invested in this show, I have to believe they will satisfy both groups of viewers.
p.s. I snicker at my husband openly when he makes the above claim.
Shasty I disagree with you on your last point. These are not ordinary people in extraordinary situations. These are extraordinary people placed in a very simplistic situation which grows to be very complex. We have a surgen, murderers, military men, very special kids, etc.
JohnLockeLegend is right. Your theory says that the show is a soap opera in the sense that they can do what ever they want to put the characters in a situation they want without providing an adequit explanation. Thats the way it comes across. If its not what you meant then you need to be much more clear.
I’ll put it this way;
If by the end of Season 6, none of the island’s mysteries have been answered, or, the writers provide us with a disappointing generalised explanation for the unexplainable occurrences that have taken place. People are going to be pissed.
Regardless of whether Jack gets over his ‘fixing things’ obsession and ends up pulling Kate, and Locke does find his ‘destiny’.
I didn’t say the characters weren’t important, of course they are, but to me the biggest character on the island, in a way is the island itself – and that’s what makes people interested, that what make’s Lost so different, and thats what makes it so popular.
Anyway, people will interpret it in different ways. Bottom line, we both like watching Lost and that’s great.
I think SMokey will be seen kicking ass in 4X 9 this Thursday, hence “the Shape of Things to Come”
…waaaiiiit a minute…is this TheRealSayyid?
yeah this theory just doesn’t work. Sure it’s about character’s, but I am 100% sure that the smoke monster, the numbers, the time discrepancies, Dharma, and the concepts of destiny will all be explained. There is absultely no chance any of these will left unresolved, sans cancellation of the show.
I’m sure I heard somewhere that the numbers would not be explained, and I think you make some very valid points Shasty (+1).
That said and whilst ultimately we do care what happens to the characters we have come to love/hate and we need to know what happens to them. I can’t allow myself to think that we won’t get answers to some of the greater mysteries of the island. In fact I don’t have to. Look at the answers we’ve had so far in S4, they are coming so fast i’m getting a nose bleed.
Oh my god where did I leave my constant?
Hi apollo, whatever happened to Shasty after your last additional comment, Shasty seems to have vanished.
Shasty’s profile was created on the 16th of April, the same day, from what I can see, that RealSayyid last updated his “General, about theories’ post - a post that he got ruined for.
This post also shares exactly the same rhetoric. Mostly notably in that it’s not a theory, but a rant, and written by someone obviously can’t keep up with the sci-fi theme - so chooses to take a polar stand-point when it comes to “what it’s all about”. I guess to get attention - like the kid in class who’d put is had up just to give the wrong answer.
A thought. No offence Shasty if you aren’t Sayid. They annoy me these anti-theorists, that’s all.
So what was your theory again? You lost me….
Instead of telling us what is wrong with our theories, why don’t you come up with one of your own?
I agree to an extent that the show has more emphasis on the characters rather than time travel etc.
I think the whole time travel, island out of space and time etc does have a role in then show, just to to the extent people are starting to believe +1
