blonde, If this is true that is great news. As far as your last comment, I can only speak for myself, to say that I have in the past when seeing a lot of these vile,insulting and some very offensive comments, have refrained from making any direct comment on any of those posts.As it is only gives them another target to aim at. The best way I have always felt to deal with it is to flag as either trollish or offensive. Comments are what keep these posters going! I have also written to Jeff to plead with him to do something. Usually the only response has been that we are self moderated, and that is it. I also notice that there are still some of these posts in the offensive section. I am truly glad that something has been done, but make no mistake about it, I was very concerned about all that were being mentioned by name.

The lack of comments was support. As Kate just said, the best way to deter them is just ignore them. If you really want to see the Trolls come out, let them think their comments bother you.

I personally found the comments directed to you were quite offensive.

The people here have your back. Good work on getting Jeff to ban them.

Of course they’ll be back eventually.

I will work on the offensive ones as well Kate, but I have to find each one myself and e-mail it to Jeff. It is tedious to say the least….

blonde, I am just glad that you were able to get something done. We will withstand these attacks by sticking together and by not commenting. Just Flag. Like Tracker said there probably will be more of this in the future. The only way to stop them is by not feeding them!

It’s sad to see the site rapidly declining by more and more trolls.

I applaud and very much appreciate your effort blonde…but I also wanted to add that I think you are unfairly insulting some good people on the site. While there is no doubt to the seriousness of threats being posted, I don’t think people are necessarily condoning by not responding to the offender.

As mentioned above by other members- flagging, ignoring and not commenting is usually the best route to take- leaving them with no ammo and eventually boring them so they leave.

Of course we care when one of us is viciously attacked by such heinous threats-and I for one always flagged posts of that nature- but berating many members for in your opinion “lack of support- I think that it’s uncalled for. But- again- I commend you for being pro active on the situation and hope you are successful in keeping trolls from ruining our site…

Now wait a minute, I can understand you not liking offensive posts but that’s what the offensive section and flags was made for. So now you’re gonna step in and be the one person police for the site? The flag system is at least some democracy. If I gotta choose between reading offensive stuff and having someone else dictate what I’m gonna read, I choose the offensive stuff. Another thing is you’re blaming people for doing the right thing cos it seems you’re not happy unless you got other people set up as victims too, is that what your saying you really wanted from people? For them to feed that troll just like you did and get themselves targeted too? Like misery loves company? Lady I was feeling sorry for you but this is too much. Just cos you didn’t have enough sense to shut up is no reason for you to find fault with people who did. Is this some damn lawsuit scam? Damn but if this whole crock o sht didn’t ruin the night for me.

I understand your agression, but as many have said its simply better to ignore the trouble makers sometimes. You’ll find that people have only been targetted when they have fed the trolls.

Simply slating those that are not trolls is counterproductive, and the implication that people who are not trolls are not good people because they didn’t feed the trolls is hypocritical and border-line offensive.

Don’t let the trolls split us on this one. Lets just be glad they’re gone for now. And learn from what has gone on.

blonde, you did the right thing going to Jeff, but the indignation is uncalled for. This is the internet and this is what happens on the unmoderated (or barely moderated sites). You ignore the offenders and sometimes they go away… OR you can choose to fight the offenders, you just can’t let them get to you. If you are going to participate in the free-for-all that is going to exist on sites like this one, I suggest you grow a thicker skin.

What did you want the rest of us to do other than flag the theories? tell them they are idiots? ignore them? We do not have any power to discipline anybody. We can only comment and use the limited resources we are given.

To continue your analogy, if you were stuck on the side of the road and I was on a packed city bus full of commuters — I can ask the driver to pull over and help you, but I am at a loss to do much else other than call 911.

snakeskinboots, The most likely reason this was put into the trollish section is the probably the very thing I was going to bring up in this post! blonde, If you are still monitoring this post,I am going to ask you something! I commend you ,as others also have for being able to get the owner of this site to take some action. Now for my question,actually I should have said questions.

1. If you have been able to get the owner of this site to get a lot of those very offensive posts taken off,and possibly get this or those offenders banned, then I would like to ask you if you might possibly suggest to him that he change the site to make it a requirement, that in order to vote or flag a theory you Must Comment when doing so!! It is too easy for persons to join this site , and then anonomously vote against and flag theories.You only need to look at the endless list of users to see how many there are that have all zeros attached to their Identity! If this was a requirement it would deter a lot of abusers,who have nothing better to do than try to change the way a theory is sometimes un-fairly judged, if only by appearances according to the number of positive votes that are shown.

An example would be this one: My theory: 15 comments; 10 indicate +1 ; 5 others comment but do not show how ,or if they voted; this theory shows up as a +5. As this now indicates that there were possibly 5 drive by votes.Well now if those other 5 that commented had voted -1 that would account for all the votes. 15comments = 10 yes and 5 no = A plus 5 rating. I guess what I am trying to say here is if you comment to indicate a. +1 b. -1 or c. no vote. This would indicate to the person that had put a lot of work into their theory at least a fair assessment of their work. All this will only work if everyone adheres to that formula. I can not tell you how many posts I have read that were shown a false representation of what people really thought. This system of voting is flawed, but it is what we have to work with. Now I am sorry that took so long, but that is how I feel. 2.Another long time member of this site brought up another very good suggestion of how it would also help if there were a category for Questions. This would help to make actual theories remain longer on the main board! The person posing the Question could even start it themselves by flagging as such.Then the next person,so on and on.

To anyone that has gotten this far in reading this, I want to Thank you for doing so,and also say I hope my intentions for doing this are interpreted as they are meant ! I truly enjoy this site and my only objective is to try and make it a fair place for what it was intended.A fun place to be with people sharing their thoughts about the show we all have embraced called Lost.

KSJ: I’m sorry to contradict you and I mean no offense, but I happen to take my RIGHT of a private vote very seriously. Often I don’t even vote at all, and usually when i do it’s positive, but just the same, I don’t step out of the poll booth on election day and proclaim to everyone who I just voted for, and I won’t do it here either. If such a thing were implemented, there would be many people not bothering to vote because they’d know there would be others going through figuring out who voted what. I’m sorry, but I think protection of the right to a private vote for all supersedes anyone else’s desire to know the votes of others.

I don’t think you can require people to comment when they rate or flag a theoryt/thread — people don’t have the time, the site can be flakey and comments get lost in the bad gateway — and frankly it is often unnecessary. If someone else voices my sentiments (positively or negatively), there is little need to comment. If someone is being blatantly offensive, there is no need to comment. Even when someone doesn’t voice my opinion, I react positively or negatively and rate the way I feel, I don’t have the time to make a substantial comment. I probably give out more +1s without comments, but I give out plenty of silent -1s as well.

I have my haters on the site and I have clearly gotten -1 from people that couldn’t care less about my theory — but that is life. Can there be a more complex formula for ranking theories and higlighting them on the front page? I think so… Can there be some veto power or counterweight to the improper flagging as trollish (or otherwise)? Probably. I don’t know if Jeff is open to suggestions but I certainly have a few. I am sure others do as well.

ChuckG, I can certainly see your point, Thanks for the input, although I still think that a questions only choice of flagging would help to keep the main board open to more theories before, they get buried so deep they get Lost (pun intended).

Most of the time common sense, should dictate as far as the voting goes, on the reflection to the poster of the theory.

ozzig, I take no offense to what you say, and I actually really do agree with you. I guess I am just searching for a way to improve things,but that may come off as my trying to dictate to others on what they do or how they should respond .

You are right in saying that you have a right to your opinion or vote without indicating your choice of either. I am in complete agreement. :-)

I made this suggestion once before, regarding the burying of theories, but it got buried…….

People, old, new, whatever, could take turns with putting up a daily/bi-weekly/?? post… Q & A 4/9(date) for people to ask general questions. It would help some with the number of posts on the board, and it might even get more attention for the question itself since it wouldn’t get buried as quickly. Might even promote some hostility reduction. It would be nice to have a question section, but since we don’t, make the best of it.

How about letting someone volunteer? I think it would a good opportunity for anyone newer to the site who would like to get their feet wet but maybe don’t have a theory in mind yet.

It could be started with one of their own questions as first comment even, just make sure to title is as Q&A for all, with the date.

Can I just say that you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I myself was commenting on trollish posts and telling the users where to go but I got my wrists slapped for my trouble.

Tbh I have kind of given up on this site because I have better things to do than wade through a bunch of insults and nonsense to get to the good theories but I am sad this happened to you Blonde.

But please understand that people have been trying to think of ways to deal with this particular hydra for months and months. He/she keeps coming back because he/she gets some form of validation whatever we do.

thanks Mrs., snake, wtf, tracker (no shockers there)….it is so much worse than you know. PLEASE be careful on this site girls. DO NOT EVER put any personal info on here. Do not EVER give out your e-mail (even if it is a hotmail it is traceable), I have been through hell and back. I am in contact with the police as well as a on-line security company that tracks down on-line predators and they are monitoring the site as well, but unfortunately there is not much we can do besides support each other, be smart, & be safe. My little girls were targeted off site by the same predator (on myspace), I can’t even talk about it….you have a sick person on this site who is here to hurt you….just be cautious & don’t trust anyone. My biggest mistake was having a link to my my space……NEVER do that & avoid usernames you use on other sites as a username. Also leave your occupation and interests off & of course a picture. Shame on the people who post flagged my post as “trollish”. I can’t even think about how someone could do that to someone trying to protect others & their own family. So sad.

By the way….I am outta here for good. I wish you all well & hope the end of season 4 gives us all some answers. remember…I said Aaron is Kates biological son, the crash is happening over & over, & Locke is in the coffin…. lol…so I want props even though I won’t be around. i agree blonde it is sad that this post is in the trollish section im so annoyed by that, anyhow i hope you and your family stay safe and that this monster was all talk i was scared for a few nights after it happened but there was no way that they could trace my address or get me off here. I just find it all so sad that we have been targeted like this when we did no wrong. It seems this person has targeted those who seem easy to do so meaning those who post positive things and do no harm. I for one cannot believe this person made so many sexual refrences about me and you blonde and others and made me feel so degraded. I cant even begin to tell you what my partner made of it all. Anyway it seems to have stopped for now lets hope this coward has got the message that to target women in this way is not something we will tolerate. I have used the internet for many years now and have never been threatened with murder or rape like i was on here,lets just say its been an eyeopener for me and i will be carefull which sites i visit and who i trust. I think you are very brave blonde others would have stopped visiting the site i am so glad you didnt and you are still on the site. blonde, I just want to wish you well, I am sure that this has been quite an ordeal for you. But I still believe there are many ,more good people than bad that use this site. But unfortunately the few bad people that may find it amusing to do so , are the ones that have put this in the trollish section.

I have been off the site for a few days and I don’t know what this is all about but I can’t believe what I’m reading! I’m sorry this has happened to you. I tried taking on the trolls months ago and it backfired so I left the site for a while. When I started visiting again I took the advice of the majority at the time and flagged as trollish etc and moved on.congrats on getting Jeff to take action.
