For those that have followed me this far, a little extra to do with theta consciousness and the Universal Mind - I retain an open mind as to whether we are talking about planet wide or concentrated to the island. I’ve already commented that in a state of theta consciousness one can access the Universal Mind (I think I’ll call it collective consciousness from now on - it sounds more scientific) and from here can access the past, present and future.
With regard to the future, it is present thought that usually determines the future. We are very uncomplicated beings and therefore our relatively simple (sorry!) thoughts lead to relatively simple future outcomes. Hence why psychics can get a good sample of the future. Simplifying further, our thoughts direct fate! If our thoughts are fixed, then fate is fixed - the perfect self fulfilling prophecy. An example - Des samples the future (exposure to magnetism may have forced him into theta consciousness). Sees Charlie dying in the future, so acts to prevent it. Then becomes convinced that Charlie is fated to die and that convinces Charlie - hence Charlie eventually does die.
However, the flip side of that is that thought can change fate. As long as your thoughts aren’t fixed on an outcome, then fate can be changed.
The power of thought! A powerful theme in the show. Look at Hurley - he can make Jacob’s cabin, Charlie in the future disappear by the power of thought. Jack using the power of thought to overcome ‘fear’. Any others??

This goes along with the saying “What you fear, you draw near”. I am a huge believer that your thoughts create your own reality, and that nothing is ever completely predestined or predetermined.
I believe we come into this life under a certain set of circumstances, and presented with a set of life challenges, which can be altered by your thoughts and learning lessons in life.
This is in no way, connected to any scientific premise which firmly exists, but is a part of our consciousness not yet understood.
We are connected to the “all knowing information highway in the universe”, but have yet to understand how to access it, much less use it.
