LOST-Theories.com

Before you read this theory, it is important to bear in mind, that it doesn’t matter whether you believe what I am about to discuss exists, it only matters that you believe the Lost writers would use it as a plot device. And please stick with this one – I like it a lot!!

This theory is an extended version of a previous theory (EEP, parapsychology and island explanations) that hypothesized that some kind of collective consciousness exists on the island.

To extend this theory, I first need to discuss brain waves. Four brain wave frequencies exist – beta, alpha, theta and delta.

Beta brain waves relate to normal waking activity i.e. our conscious mind. Our consciousness is focussed on events around us using our physical senses. Most people exist predominantly within beta.

Alpha brain waves reflect a more inwardly focussed mindset e.g. daydreaming. This tends to be a more self reflective mindset, and many people are not comfortable with self reflection and on slipping into alpha waves will find some external focus to redirect back to beta e.g. if you are on your own in the house and find yourself ‘daydreaming’ you might do the housework, phone a friend, watch TV etc to regain a more external focus. There is a suggestion that disorders such as attention deficit disorder reflect a more consistent alpha (daydreaming) state and an inability to stay focussed on your external environment!

Theta brain waves are associated with deep meditation and some forms of sleep. It is in this state that one can readily access the subconscious mind.

Delta brain waves are totally related to the subconscious mind and generally only occur during deep sleep. In this state the conscious and subconscious mind are effectively unconnected i.e. it is very difficult to remember anything that was experienced during the delta state.

Remember the last time you were daydreaming, and were suddenly brought back to reality – that was alpha. If you can remember a dream, that’s theta and if you can’t, that’s delta.

How is this related to the theme of a collective island consciousness? This is where things get interesting!! Some people believe that all information, both past, present and future, exists in what is referred to as the ‘Universal Mind’. More interestingly, it is believed that the Universal Mind is accessible from a deep theta state of awareness – although most individuals are more comfortable with ‘self’ consciousness.

In addition, during theta consciousness subjects often state that their dreaming consciousness often overlaps with their waking consciousness. Thus some of the ‘hallucinations’ experienced by the losties could be explained as a side effect of slipping into theta consciousness.

It is important to note that an element of control is required to utilise a state of theta consciousness effectively. It is believed that certain gifted individuals can access the universal mind more easily than others. The process of extended remote viewing – the access of hidden information using an altered state of consciousness – is often used to describe this process! And this is where the first piece of Lost ‘canon’ supports this theory.

We already know that the Dharma Initiative were very interested in parapsychology. This next excerpt is lifted directly from Lostpedia. In the Lost Experience, at the very beginning when the first phone number is called for 877-hansorg, one of the messages that plays has Thomas Mittelwerk leaving a message for Hugh McIntyre. On it he says “We should go ahead and rename the Accelerated Remote Viewing Training Facility, we’ve got to try and put a public face on this.”

A direct reference to ‘remote viewing’ which we know is related to theta consciousness. In addition, it is accelerated remote viewing which suggests an enhancement of what was previously possible. It is also important to note that whilst certain gifted individuals are more capable of accessing theta consciousness, others can be trained to reach this state (the major problem is preventing people losing consciousness i.e. falling into deep sleep).

Remote viewing and entering theta consciousness are also often associated with the whispers. An unconfirmed comment on Dark UFO also claimed that JJ commented that the whispers are from the Dharma Remote Viewing Initiative!!

Another interesting aspect is the fact that once you achieve a state of theta consciousness, and have accessed the Universal Mind, you can perform astral projection i.e. the transferring of consciousness from the physical body to the astral body.

Even more interesting, is that scientific evidence proves magnetic stimulation of the brain can induce slow waves typical of deep sleep i.e. delta waves!! Also, scientists have discovered cells in the brain containing magnetite. These cells are proximal to the pituitary gland, and therefore these glands may use info from the earth’s magnetic field to regulate hormone release to control levels of consciousness!!! Therefore, is it not possible that an Island with unique magnetic properties might greatly enhance the possibility of entering theta consciousness.

So lets recap. The island’s unique magnetic properties promote a state of theta consciousness and access to the ‘universal mind’ – in this case the universal mind might only apply to those people on the island, since they are effectively trapped in some sort of bubble. Gifted individuals can access theta consciousness more readily (Ben, Walt?), but people can be trained (Accelerated Remote Viewing Training Facility). If Ben can access the ‘universal mind’ readily, then he can access info from the past, present & future – is this why he is so effective at predicting how individuals are going to behave? Once trained, individuals would also have access to the Universal Mind, although wouldn’t have the same level of control as the gifted individual. Individuals who are unaware/untrained might still attain theta consciousness but would have little control over events e.g. the Losties hallucinations! Another aspect of theta consciousness is the ability to perform astral projection. Is it the case that Ben (even locked up) could communicate with Harper, who is based at the Dharma station and is sufficiently trained to ‘project’ to pass the message to Julier during the Other Woman. In addition, theta consciousness is often associated with ‘whispers’. Finally, it is interesting that Abbadon would send Miles – a psychic!!

Interesting and I like how you mentioned what JJ Adams said about the Dharma remote viewing initiative. It was a bit confusing though.

Nameless Linus - LOL JJ Adams. :P

Seedy - I like what you have to say here. It sounds interesting and plausible and fits the criteria of “can be explained scientifically.” however, I think a lot of us would be severely P-O’ed if we found out that most of this was either a hallucination or a dream. It would seem almost like a cop-out.

If what you say is true (which it may be) what do you think about Jacob’s list? The good ones and the bad ones? Do you think the good ones are predetermined to be thought to be able to handle the Remote Viewing Training? And the bad ones wont be able to handle it?

+1 - thank you for making a theory that is easy to understand and obviously well thought out.

Appolobar - thanks for the comments.

Jacob certainly possesses a number of psychic abilities i.e. telekinesis, bilocation/astral projection?? So in theory I should be able to come up with an explanation for him. I seem to remember the writers claim that Ben & Jacob have a symbiotic relationship. But it seems to me that Ben is somehow keeping Jacob prisoner against his will. I wonder if Jacob is the one who can judge who is good/bad, but Ben can extract that information from him (due to his psychic powers). Perhaps Ben has to keep Jacob under shackles because Jacob thinks that Ben is ‘bad’. I think this is more to do with Ben wanting to create a Utopia and is seperate from the Remote Viewing Training.

Seedy, I think this is brilliant and am thankful you have brought this information to the forefront.

As mentioned in your previous theory which I enjoyed reading so much, these elements do play a part in answering some of the mysteries, which can be answered satisfactorily IMO with the conclusions you have drawn.

Well researched, well written and thought out! +1 Great Job!

Seedy, I really enjoyed that. +1.

Appolo - I don’t believe that we will find out that this is some dream sequence.

Manipulation of brainwaves is a brilliant idea. It is both scientific and theological. Science can get on board with the Unversal Mind, and religion can still have their God.

I need to ponder this further. Thank you for the info to mull over,

Heya seedy. I like your presentation. Well worded, backed up with facts and organized into a plausible theory. While I’m not for the “Universal Mind” elements in terms of past, present, future insight, I do believe that Remote Viewing is a strong example of what some of the non-Cerberus whispers are and could explain some of the apparent apparitions on the island.

    Good read. +1

This is a very good theory. I think this is entirely possible considering the Thomas Mittelwerk message. This site should focus on clues like these that can hint at the nature of the island. I think we should go more in that direction than trying to figure out the specifics. We might get more done! I’m really tired of the 100% speculation. Theories should be backed by facts from the show and this one is. Good stuff.

    +1

seedy, +1 for a well written, well researched and well thought out theory! Thank you. While I may not buy into the whole theory, I, like Billy think the Remote Viewing may play a big part in the show.

    Good stuff!!!

I like, it, but a far simpler explanation would be some type fo radio contact from Ben’s basement to the temple.

Seedy, I have somehow missed a lot of your theories, but I am now catching up, and enjoying them very much. +1
