It might be a little dangerous…”

— kitterkatters64

think Christian Shephard had a very specific goal when he took his fateful trip to Australia. I think he was sent to bring Aaron (still in Claire’s belly) to the Island.

This is why when he met Ana Lucia, former cop/current security guard at the airport, he asked her to go with him to Australia. He stated that it “might be a little dangerous” and he might need someone to protect him. He suggested they use aliases and called himself “Tom” and called her “Sarah”.

Once they got there, he started drinking heavily. I believe this is because he was really conflicted by what he had to do. He had feelings for Claire, his daughter…….but he also knew that the Island/Jacob wouldnt accept no for an answer. He failed in his mission, that may be why he was found dead in an alley in Sydney of an “alcohol induced heart attack” (???) Since he wasnt successful in getting Claire(and Aaron) to the Island, he was now used as bait to get Jack there.

I cant wait to hear what you guys think……..

Over the course of years, Christian’s troubles increased. He developed a drinking problem, became disconnected with many of his friends, and began to distance himself from his family, even to the point of taking private and sporadic trips for multiple periods of time.” (source: http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Christian_Shephard )

these unexplained trips could be to the Island and/or doing “work” for the Island.

I was just thinking that…I rewatched some episodes and Jack’s mom says something about “it’s not like the other times” referring to Christian disappearing. Maybe he’s like Mr. Friendly and is one of the others and can go back and forth.

so he committed suicide to get Jack to the island? Sorry I can’t buy that.

where did i say anything about suicide?? “Since he wasnt successful in getting Claire(and Aaron) to the Island, he was now used as bait to get Jack there. ”

well, I guess I assumed that a drunk induced heart attack is basically suicide. but, ok, that was my bad. So who/what are you saying killed christian to get jack to the island?

I think that maybe the episode with Nikki and Paulo may be more relevant than we have been led to believe. It could be that christian was not dead but only in a coma induced by the bite of a Medusa spider. However that’s probably nonsense cause i’m sure a autopsy has een mentioned, but stranger things have happened.

I do find it interesting that when Ana-lucia chose the name of Jack’s wife, Sarah, that christian decided he’d call himself the name of Claire’s boyfriend Tom.

Could it be that his children, jack and Claire’s interaction, pregnancy with Aaran + Sarah ‘saving’ Jack, be the reason that they are needed, wanted, suitable candidates for the island?

I also think it is the medusa spider. Have for a while now. But you are right, ZeeeC, that doesnt explain an autopsy and they have mentioned one. Maybe someone was paid off to forge autopsy documents…?

In Eco’s flashback with the girl who drowned, the coroner didn’t realise the girl wasn’t dead. So it could be possible the medusa spider venom puts a body so close to death, that a coroner could miss it, (especially if the victim was on one hell of a bender the night before, which would be the obvious case of death).

    Apoll & law558:

I’ve tried to explain away an autopsy to myself. I wonder how much care is taken with putting a body back together after an autopsy. But, someone being paid off could make sense.

The real reason I think the Medusa spider theory could be right is while not totally terrible the episode ‘expose’ just does not fit properly with the narration of the show. It’s a homage to twighlight zone/tales of the unexpected. It stands out like a sore thumb, hopefully cause there is much more to it.

I completely agree, ZeeeC. That episode was so totally random that it must have some meaning to the show. Assuming that Niki and Paulo dont come back to life and we dont learn more about their flashbacks, the only thing I can take out of that story to mean anything was the effects of that spider. I wholeheartedly believe that Christian Shepard was bitten by one - maybe on purpose, maybe not, maybe with his being aware, maybe not. I know there are a lot of details to work out that I cant work out (whoever hit him with that spider venom - how did they know he would survive the crash? Why would they do that? etc etc…) I believe he MUST have either done it to himself or known that it was being done to him or else he would have woken up on the island and been freaking out totally. He seems like he has a purpose for being alive on that island so I believe it was on purpose and he knew about it. I am soooo glad that somebody else agrees with me. I have said it in numerous comments but it always gets poo-pooed. Yay!

I’m glad someone agrees with me. I have read the producers have said they were responding to the viewers request for a story about the extras but I thnk they’re lying to cover a potentially huge part of the puzzle. i mean they would know themselves that that episode was really odd in comparison.

    But we could be wrong.

Christian Shephard is dead. There is simply too much evidence to support the contrary… the I.D. of the body, the autopsy report, the length of time passed from his death to the arrival on the plane, the casket, his mysterious travels on the island, his interactions with the survivors. All of these things point more to a “supernatural” Christian Shephard than a living Christian Shephard. The producers have said that outright.

He’s dead. He may still be on the island, as a spirit, a manifestation or some other form of apparition. Supernatural elements of the show have become more and more common since Season 3.

And the medusa spider? The one that bit Paulo was real… taken from Arzt collection. But the ones that approached Nikki were the smoke monster, as stated by Damon / Carlton -

They may have quite a sense of humor during their podcasts and avoid certain subjects in order to for events to remain dramatic and surprising, but they have yet to flat out lie to us about anything. Maybe I’m the only one who’s being fooled because soooo many people believe that he’s alive.

Nikki and Paulo were introduced in a way that was not much different than any other flashback episode, except that we’d never seen them in previous episodes. The creators did a fantastic job “inserting” them into previous story elements and making it seem like they’d been there all along. The only episode that didn’t follow the exact format of previous ones was the one where they were paralyzed. So many fans of the show hated Nikki and Paulo so the writers decided to end their lives in an interesting and shocking way, much like anyone else who dies in the series.

It’s clear that Christian Shephard plays an important role in the off-island past and the on-island present, but the events that led up to his death and arrival on the island don’t seem to bear any relevance to his actions now that he’s on the island. He’s dead, and with death he was probably granted a certain insight which he now hopes to use to help the survivors and/or Jacob.

If Christian did have knowledge of the Island prior to the crash of Oceanic 815 (and that’s a big leap of faith in terms of anything validated from the show) I would be inclined to think the opposite to your theory here.

I would think that Christian wanted to prevent Claire (with Aaron) from getting to the Island.

However, this would mean that Christian was a) aware of the Island, and b) knew that boarding Oceanic 815 was a one-way ticket there. Both of these things strain credulity, for me.

kit, those mysterious trips could have been to anywhere. I think they really were to Australia, where he was having an affair with a woman (Claire’s mum). The affair probably lasted a long time and Christian started drinking when Claire’s mom stopped the affair and kept Christian from seeing his daughter. Just my opinion.

BTW - you guys make such good points (Billy and AC) that I am starting to doubt the medusa spider thing. Okay, call me a flip-flopper. I know, I know. I do this all the time. Haha!!

Probably he IS really dead but supernaturally exists on the island. Dont know what the heck happened to his body, though…

    *Sorry ZeeeC!!
