We still do not know very much about the character of Danilelle Rousseau and hopefully some gaps will be filled in in Season 4 but until then we are left to speculate on exactly what she’s been doing on the island for 16 years.
It has occurred to me that Rousseau must have had some kind of contact with the Monster, as in Exodus when the Monster passes by Jack and co. in the jungle Jack ask’s what it is and she states “It is a security system, it’s purpose is that of any security system, to protect something - the Island”. Either Rousseau had some prior knowledge of the Monster before she came to the island, or she has had an encounter with it similar to Locke’s in Walkabout.
Another event which hinted that Danielle had knowledge of the Monster was in Solitary when something attack’s her shelter, Sayid say’s to Danielle ‘don’t go out there, it might be that other thing” Danielle ask’s “What other thing? and Sayid say’s “The Monster” Danielle firmly states to Sayid that “there’s no such things as Monsters” .
I believe that Danielle may have or has at one time had some kind of communication with the Monster, indeed if Danielle’s team was sent by Hanso and if the Monster is infact a Dharma security system then it may have recognised her as an ally and may have protected and/or guided her during her time on the island. After all it does seem pretty unlikely that she managed to avoid the Others for 16 years on the island, perhaps the territory she resided in was known by the Others to be the Monsters main stomping ground?
I also think it’s possible that the Monster may manipulate Rousseau to some degree, if the Monster is also responsible for the whispers, it may have been the Monster that allowed her to hear the Whispers about “the Others coming for the boy” in order to make her head for the beach camp and later bring Locke into the jungle (where the Monster could nab him). I think it is also interesting that the first time the whispers are heard they are heard by Sayid shortly after Rousseau explains to him that the Others can be heard “whispering in the jungle”.
Well that’s about all I’ve got, anyone else got any thoughts on Rousseau?

CPB…I think you could be right about Rousseau being manipulated. By Smokie or the whispers.Do you think they are one and the same?For some reason i hadnt thought of that.
My thoughts on Rousseau are that she doesnt seem crazy enough to kill her entire team without some reason.The whole sickness topic has been put to bed by saying Rousseau is crazy and the sickness was a ploy to keep the DI away from the island but I believe her.
Then again with your theory in mind..maybe Smokie manipulated her into killing them.
WTF - about the whispers and smokie being one and the same in 50/50 on that one, a lot of theorists do seem to think they are though.
Personally I would prefer if the Monster and Whispers weren’t part of the same phenomena, but they might well be.

Just read it…Great theory! Still find it hard to believe Rousseau could have gone so insane in such a short time.She should be totally batty by now!
We saw the Others dress up in shabby clothes and play pretend village…why do we not think that Rousseau is doing the same thing? The only reason would be IF the Others were imitating Rousseau people but I don’t think so.
And Rousseau reunion with her daughter Alex was just too weird…”help me tie him up” !?!?!?!??? What was that?
For a brother and sister pair, I would have to call out Karl and Alex. The writers would be calling on a little VC Andrews for that plot.
