What if it was Juliet in the coffin? That is definately one funeral Jack would go to but maybe no one else and definately not Kate. Juliet is isolated in that she has betrayed the others and with the exception of Jack is not trusted by the losties.
Now the bit that will upset fans of JATE! What if Juliet died because she was pregnant with Jacks baby, that would be a cruel twist of fate but.. It would definately help explain Jacks obvious grief in the flash forward. Jack wants to always fix things and the fact that he couldn’t save Juliet would send him over the edge. Of course this doesn’t explain why Jack would be so desperate to return to the island but my guess is maybe he wants to save the only family he has left Claire and Aaron.

How do you explain the obit then?
Tree_sneakers has a point jamtay1.

I’m sorry dude but I don’t think this is too likely. As much as I wish it was Juliette lol.
Good point tree sneakers I have a few possibilities. The first is that Jack was reading a different obit or for some reason the obit is wrong or he was looking for the funeral homes address and it was on that obit.
I may be nit picking here, but technically it is a newspaper article. Jack didn’t tear it from the obituaries. I’m not sure if that has any significance or not. I thought most obits were written by loved ones.
Anyway, we all may be making something out of nothing. Check out the following page on Lostpedia. It may be that the producers will make the article illegible or change the text in future DVD releases.

I think you are probably right Sham it must drive the producers nuts that every bit of written text is zoomed in and analysed! Im hoping you are right because then my thory holds up just about!
That’s true jamtay1. If the producers change the name and info., then it could be anyone.
One would think that after three seasons the props master for LOST would be aware that the people able to get high res screencaps are going to post this stuff online.
That’s a fair point Sham. But remember when John says that been able to cheat is what makes been a human so wonderfull? I would say that human error is the same it keeps things unpredictable and adds suspense but I digress. The great thing about Lost is that just about anything can happen and almost any theory is possible!
I don’t think the obit was a mistake. Also, wasn’t it brought up on this site that it could be two different newspaper articles?
And if by chance you’re right about Juliette being in the coffin, wouldn’t a better assumption be that it’s Goodwin’s baby? But I guess the timeline wouldn’t quite jive with that.
I think you are right about the two articles YouAll, but I can’t recall who posted that.
One shot looked like it could be the actually obit because of the shape difference. Jack probably would have needed the obit because it would have the address of the funeral home.
I’ll see if I can find that post.
Think I found it..

Yep, too bad we can’t see a close up of the obit!
I’ll tell you what though, that website is getting added to my faves. That place has tons of HD caps.
Jam: I thought when Jack was talking to Kate at the Airport, she said to Jack, “Why would I go to his funeral”? So, I don’t think it is Juliette.
Here is the transcript.
Jack: I was hoping that you’d heard. That maybe you’d go to the funeral.
Kate: Why would I go to the funeral?
I like it… it’s wrong, but I still like it. It makes sense apart from Juliet not being a guy i.e. Mr. Lantham. My money’s on the walt/michael theory going round.
Thanks for pointing that out, Shammie! I still don’t think it’s Juliette, but you never know!
Jam: Forgot to +1, dude!
Thanks sham. And yeah, that site is great.
My money is also on Michael.
I’m also leaning towards Michael Tree. I think it will be how the the writers show us Mike has paid for his actions. Its very sad though. Gosh everything is sad tonight.
It has been kind of a blue day mrs. It’s been raining here for two days now which doesn’t help.
But back to the topic. I also think Michael is the person in the coffin.
Whoever it is, we can’t rule out the possibility that they were always under an assumed name (think Sawyer) or that they changed it after rescue and before the flashforward.
Nooooooooooooooo its not Sawyer. Its not its not its not.
LMAO! Cool your hormones mrs. :)
I was using him as an example of using an assumed name. Maybe that was a hint by the writers that others might be too.
John locke for example. Are we sure who his real parents are and if that’s his name?
Sorry, didn’t mean to put any undue stress upon you!
Because it’s a flashforward in the future surely if it could be any male apart from Jack as anything could have happened since Naomi got killed at the end of series 3? Why does it have to be Walt or Michael??
magpie, if you want you can search for theories on “the coffin” or related titles for an explanation of the clues. in a nutshell….the obit said the man was an artist, had a teenage son, lived in NY i think (i may be wrong on that), the funeral was in a seemingly “black neighborhood” (just pointing out past convos, please don’t hate me for saying that), and Jack said “neither” when asked if he was family or friend. i hope this helps.
