Hard to analyze these ones where someone dies. The daths in S2 were especailly stark. Well, anyway—a really striking image was how much like a wedding ceremony Sayid and Shannon’s last conversation was—kneeling together, questions of “do you” answers “I do.” And in the beginning he gives her a home (contrast her stepmom not giving her money to pay rent). Loving someone=believing in them. Claire also talks of her relationship with Charlie in terms of marriage. Charlie doesn’t seem to believe in Claire though. And he’s still married to the VM.

Both Shannon and Claire have troubled relationships with their fathers. Incest seems to haunt Shannon’s family—her Dad chose to marry someone who looks remarkably like her. The scene where she and Boone drink scotch out of little doll cups—doing something adult with something that should be a child’s. But then Fathers also neglect daughters—Shannon protects the little girl in her ballet class from realizing that her Dad is not watching her but flirting with a teacher. Sabrina’s attitude toward Shannon—that she has to go it alone—Charlie also talks about Claire needing to learn responsibility. (And later will steal the baby.) Ana-Lucia very much the everyone for themselves type as well. Michael turns around and does the right thing—helping those who are weaker.

Also—weaker, younger beings need to be confined (swaddled)—the more mature, the more free. I think that makes Sawyer, young—he is swaddled here as Aaron is. Kate and Sawyer’s confinement later on?

I can’t really figure out still what is going on with Walt’s appearance and the fact that “he” leads Shannon to her death—here’s what I’ve got.

Walt is either really Walt using his power and, I think, being coerced by someone. Or he’s actually smokie. In either case it’s a manipulation in order to bring about the confrontation in which Shannon will be shot. So, why? I can think of two results—Ana-Lucia is no longer considered a leader and Sayid reverts back to trying to control things through violence. No why someone would want either of these two things isn’t clear to me. Notice that the rain also serves to add to the confusion so I think is also part of the manipulation. And I think Cindy was already one of the others and took off at the appropriate time.

Vincent leads Shannon to Boone’s grave—trying to tell her what’s going to happen? Why does he keep leading her into the jungle then later?

Whispers: Walt in backwards speech says “they’re coming”

Whispers in the jungle from Lostpedia: She’s coming; Here she comes; Dying sucks; I’m in someone’s dream; It’s the brother that helps us. (There are more here: http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Whispertranscripts#Sayid.26Shannoninthejungle)

they’re coming=not the others, but whatever the whispers represent?

she’s coming, here she comes=she’s going to die, to join the whispers?

Other things in the episode:

Rose, like Jacob, doesn’t like technology—stops using the washer and dryer in the hatch.

Ana Lucia says 12 people were snatched—did we ever find out who they all were and what happened to them?

Great observations, jaz. And you’re right… more questions than answers. (Fred’s speculations aside…)

Care to elaborate on those thougts re: Cindy?

Well Cindy’s disappearance seems completely timed to maximize the freaked-outedness of everyone. It makes it appear as if the Others are attacking when they don’t in fact seem to be there—so I was thinking that she was with the Others even before the crash—a plant on the plane. I went back and checked on some things about her and they seem to bear this out. The strongest indiciation is that she tells Ana Lucia that she doesn’t remember Nathan being on the plane and yet never mentions that she doesn’t remember Goodwin not being on the plane. Also she immediately becomes the caretaker of the kids who are eventaully abducted, so I’m thinking she aided and abetted there. Then when she’s with the Others, she continues in that child minder role.

I agree with your assessment of Cindy. When we see her later and they are just observing, her tone of voice is strange like she’s part of a cult and someone who has been brainwashed.

Did you find Libby’s reaction to when Michael “just ran off” a bit strange?

Yeah Stip, I thought she let him run off.

Interesting Jaz! You really got me thinking now! Well, I always thought that: “she’s coming, here she comes” was a warning that Ana lucia is coming! But maybe the whispers meant Shannon is coming…like to join the whisperers?..hmm

    NOW ABOUT CINDY:

I think Cindy is very intriguing! I agree with you, Jaz, that she was always an “other”. I have a lot of questions regarding her!:

    1. Does she know what is going on and why the losties are there?

    2. I get the impression that she knew they would crash and end up on the island. But how is that possible, when Desmond’s act of “not pushing the button” was a random thing?

    3. No one knew he wouldn’t push the button at that exact moment and make the plane crash, right? (unless Desmond told Wendy about that and somehow through that other people found out?)

    4. If Cindy is in a group associated with the Island, then was the “crash” planned? Or were they headed somewhere for a reason, but crashed on the way? UGH!!

    5. Does she know why they crashed? Why all these people are connected?

    6. Why was she there to watch Jack in the cage? That comment was sooo weird to me! …Oh! WAIT a MINUTE! Actually, I would love to watch Jack too!!..hmm, so maybe I understand her after all. hehe! :)

Alright Alright!….Seriously that was a very odd comment! AND so was the way she said it too! Like, “DUH! I’m here to watch! Don’t you get it Jack?”

OK! One more thing (sorry this is so long)- I know that Cindy was that author’s girl friend. (Gary Troup) Ok Red Flag!! That is WEIRD! It gives me the impression that she knows something!! Is she involved in some sort of conspiracy? Now, whether it’s to cover it up or to uncover it, I don’t know…. (BUT - I doubt it has to do with a conspiracy that prevents us from having…GREATMacaronni & Cheese Dinners!)

+1 Excellent observation, keep up the good work!

PG-lol I can just hear you saying that in my head—you and Fred manifestation #1—so now I’ve got voices in stereo in my head, o my.

Excellent questions—It is true that the crash seemed to come as a surprise to the others in general—so how could Cindy be in cahoots with them even before the crash? Yet it’s been speculated that the pilot had something to do with bringing the plane there and that’s why he needed to be killed (before he could reveal anything of importance). And what I noted above about Cindy also seems to point to her being an agent of some kind. The thing about Des and pressing/not pressing the button—I don’t think Des actually did bring the plane down. I think he was made to think that so that he would turn the failsafe key (when he realizes the plane came down when he was late pressing the button is when he realizes he has to do something).

WHOA—just had a sudden insight (I hope)—we’ve been assuming from the scene in which we see the others witness the crash that the crash was, to some extent, a surprise for them. Well I just realized—who gets sent to spy on the Losties—Ethan & Goodwin—2of the 3 fertility specialists! Isn’t that strange? And then the last one is sent to the Losties in S3. Seems an odd way to treat your specialists to me. What if that is a ruse, and the real agenda does have to do with the people aboard the plane, Ben DID know the plane was going to crash, but he and the rest of his crew pretend to be surprised for the benefit of the Doctors and maintaining the ruse of trying to cure the fertility problems (some other genetic interest/experimentation going on possibly?). Also of note that neither Ethan or Goodwin got the burial at sea—possible indicating they are not members of the original tribe—not in on the big secret whatever it is. So what if Cindy is a member of this tribe?

All good questions. Danged if we don’t have any answers! :-)

    Wow Jaz,

Great response! I also think the pilot had something to do with bringing the plane there. But I never thought about that being the reason why he needed to be killed! Man…this show drives me crazy!! I already had more questions than answers…but now it’s just getting ridiculous!…. :)

I felt for Shannon in this episode. Her stepmother and Boone seem to be trying to control her and keep her in the role that suits them…Totally dependant.

I really felt that Boone let her down when she needed him in New York.He obviously agreed with his mother that Shannon was useless and it seemed unjust that Boone was going to receive an inheritance(from his own father i assume )while Shannons father left her at the mercy of a family who had no belief in her to succeed at anything.

I thought of the Looking Glass reflection angle in regards to Walt talking backwards.Dont know what it means though.

Sorry, everybody, but I respectfully disagree with one of the main points here.

Yes, there are strange doings on the island. Yes, the Others do seem to have some kind of secret knowledge. They are, however, neither omniscient, nor perfect. They get surprised. They make mistakes. They miscalculate.

The only reason that 815 crashed is because Des got distracted killing Kelvin, and did not get back to the hatch in time to timely push the button. Could Ben have predicted that Kelvin’s suit would rip? That Des would notice it? That Des would follow Kelvin? That Des would fight Kelvin? That Des would be late getting back to the hatch? Simply not possible to predict.

I will allow as how the Losties lives are interconnected in freaky ways. I will not make the mistake of confusing fate and coincidence. But I can’t get behind the line of theories that give all-knowing powers to Ben and the others.
