‘This is’t what was supposed to happen’
— CrazyPolarBear
I’ve read theories drawing paralells between Locke and Desmond, so here is my fifty pence worth!
It would appear that Desmond was sent to the island by Mrs Hawking, she told him about time and ‘course correction’ pointing out that it is pointless to try and change anything as the universe will simply make it happen a different way (Charlies death, the man and the scaffold etc) I believe she may have been slightly dishonest, certain things might be able to be changed. For example Desmond going to island, this would require a particular set of circumstances that would be hard to replicate i.e Desmond entering the boat race and sailing along a particular route.
So I believe Mrs Hawking manipulated Desmond into believing he was destined to go to the island. Why?
Some kind of catastrophe is set to happen (and may have happened before see my other theory -Getting it right this time), and Desmond’s purpose on the island is to fix it. His purpose was to get into the Hatch and eventually use the failsafe key which would endow him with his enhanced cognitive powers, which would be crucial in the next stage of his mission - to find Naomi and facilitate the arrival of the Freighter - for what purpose I don’t yet know.
Locke on the other hand may be a tool of Jacob (From what Ben said when he took Locke To Jacobs hut, Jacob was already aware of Locke)
When Locke arrived on the island his paralysis was cured (an incentive to do as Jacob/the island instructs) In ‘Heart’s and Mind’s‘ he told Boone to put aside his differences with Sayid stating that ‘we are gonna want him on our side’, so Locke clearly knew he had a particular purpose from the begining and knew he had to convert particular people to his cause.
When Locke got into the Hatch he seemed confidant that Desmond would fix the computer and then when he failed he said that ‘this wasn’t supposed to happen’ and then screamed to some unseen entity ‘what the hell am I supposed to do?’
At the end of season 3 he killed Naomi as she was about to summon the freighter, and when Jack picked up the phone he told Jack ‘you are not supposed to do this’
The point of my theory is that I believe Desmond was sent to change something that happens on the island and Locke is supposed to ensure that it unfold’s exactly as it ‘supposed to’, in other word’s I Desmond and Locke will eventually lead opposing factions.
Or perhaps I’ve got it backward’s and it’s the other way round!
