Jaz, Please Help Me.

Attention Others

Hey guys and gals, I have been reading Bad Twin (even after Sleepz’s scathing review of the book), and have to ask myself a question. In the book there are several blaringly appearant references, namely Widmore, Paik, and Hanso at this point. Widmore and Hanso even share office space. That being said, I am really troubled by the entire set up. Admitting that I have not finished the novel, so don’t ruin it for me, I am really bothered by the fact that Widmore Corp, Paik Industries, and Hanso are all presented as fictitious groups in a reality created by the guy sucked into jet engine in the opening sequence of the show. I hope Jaz will read this and offer insight, because I think my problem has to do with the idea that the stuff we are given as part of the real world in Lost is treated as fiction by one of the characters in Lost. That really makes me wonder where the Show is going. Maybe I just don’t get it, but I just have a real problem with the way the Lost “reality” shows up in a Lost Character’s work of fiction. I can’t help but wonder if the whole show is a Gary Troup work of fiction?

Hm… just a question, doclock. You happen to read Stephen King books? ‘Cause if you do, but didn’t get the connection… well, then my answer would spoil really good some books of that guy.

what does that have to do with lost????????

In case you meant my post, yes it does. First, the writers said they are great Stephen King’s fans. Second, lockeko’s observation is exactly the main drivers of one of Stephen King’s works. It’s not discovered until well in the book, so I didn’t want to kill the joy of a long read, in case he’s into King.

Can we get to the point, now?

dococ, I do read some King, and yeah thats where I was going with this. As to The One’s question. He needs to read the book if he thinks Bad Twin doesn’t apply to Lost. It was allegedly written by one of the passengers and is rife with Lost references. It does apply, at least in the way I was posing a question about it.

Dark Tower”, mate? That’s the link between “Bad Twin” and Stephen King. I didn’t read “Bad Twin”, just deducing from what you’re saying, but it’s pretty crystal clear.

I haven’t finished it yet, but I am just reallly troubled by a person from the Lost reality discussing other Lost related things/people in a fictional setting.

Or… maybe Gary Troup’s novel is “based on actual events”?

I’m going to steer clear of this one because I haven’t read the book yet and plan to. :)

Dococ, Bad Twin goes pretty far out of the way to seem to be entirely fictional, especially after you read some correspondence between Troup and his Publisher.

    Sham, buy the book,

Ok, I think I’ll have to keep guessing, ‘cause I can’t see how would I buy the book. I looked for “Flashforward”, without success, and that’s a real book… And no, don’t tell me “go Amazon”. Four months late delivery!

doclock: I need to take a plane to get to the closest Wal Mart, dude. This is Spain, Europe ;-)

  13. lockeko Sep 12, 2007 12:53 p.m. Comment: 13

No wal mart in spain, really?

  14. Occam Sep 12, 2007 12:56 p.m. Comment: 14

Wal Mart, as like in the Wal Mart (TM)… nope. Canada, the US and Mexico —I think. But you could come over here and open the first one… that could mean business, dude. :-)

Hiya Leko! Good to see you dude. I haven’t read this book so haven’t any insights to offer. Not sure I want to read it to be honest…

throws caution to wind…enters into reckless abandon mode

haven’t read the book and probably won’t—BUT, I don’t think the writers are going to go with it’s all a fiction written by someone (well, except for the fact that it is :-) ). I do think though that we might question the “reality” of certain moments (Desmond’s flashes? maybe some of the flashbacks?). Also the characters themselves, what they accept as real, is always under question.

Lockeko, I did read the book and I enjoyed it. I’m afraid to say too much, I don’t want to ruin it for you…..I didn’t find any information presented that earth shattering though.

Lockeko: Not good at links yet :-( But I found out that Laurence Shames was the Ghost Writer for Bad Twin. I found this at Lostpedia.

Apparently Gary Troup was a real actor hired to be in just that first scene where he was sucked up into the engine. But his back story was that he had gone to Australia to drop off his manuscript of Bad Twin with his publisher.

Hurley was reading it at one point, then Sawyer was reading it, then Jack threw it in the fire and the last two pages were burned completely.

Well, Shames went to the PTB and proposed a real book and they suggested some things they would want in it. But he only used a few of their suggestions and apparently the PTB are not happy.

If you think about it, they’ve dropped that story completely and apparently they hadn’t planned on dropping it!!!

So, that’s my two cents for tonight.

thanks annie, again my main concern is that a character from lost is using other “lost” reality figures in a fictional work. That just kinda makes me question everything.

  21. Annie79 Sep 14, 2007 7:22 p.m. Comment: 21

True, Lockeko, and like I said the writers weren’t exactly thrilled about it either.

  22. sleepz Sep 19, 2007 6:14 a.m. Comment: 22

Lockecko what you are saying is explained suring the Gary Troup interview form the LC, I think it is on utube, he explains that in his life he has a lot of dealings with Hanso, Piak and Widmore and used his new book as a sort of taunt to them. I didn’t actaully say the book was bad I thought that 3/4 of the book was actually pretty OK, Seriously Try reading both Flash Forward and Sinai both exceptional books IMO I think you’ll get a kick outta them
