The symbol Dharma uses as their main logo is called a “Bagua” a symbol derived from the I Ching (pronounced –E ching). The bagua is made up of 8 sides, each side is made up of whole or broken lines representing Yin and Yang, stacked in 3’s or trigrams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Trigrams.jpg
Each of these sides represents one of the eight trigrams of the I Ching. Traditionally it was believed that the principles of the I Ching originated with the mythical Fu Xi. In this respect he is seen as an early cultural hero, one of the earliest legendary rulers of China (traditional dates 2852 BCE-2738 BCE), reputed to have had the 8 trigrams (bā gùa) revealed to him supernaturally. By the time of the legendary Yu 2070 BC–2061 BC, the trigrams had supposedly been developed into 64 hexagrams (lìu shí sì gùa), which were recorded in the scripture Lian Shan; also called Lian Shan Yi). Lian Shan, meaning “continuous mountains” in Chinese, begins with the hexagram Bound, which depicts a mountain mounting on another and is believed to be the origin of the scripture’s name.
There are many things within the DI that point to these Eastern philosophies. The use of the Bagua in their main logo, The names Hanso, Dharma are both Asian in origin. Also according to the Shri Lanka video from the Lost experience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PPCCcXarkc Hanso even states that what the DI’s mission is the “one true way” in the science to save mankind.
When broken down into it’s literal translation I Ching means–-
易 (yì), when used as an adjective, means “easy” or “simple”, while as a verb it implies “to change” or ‘to exchange/substitute one thing for another’. 經 (jīng) here means “classic (text)”, derived from its original meaning of “regularity” or “persistency”, implying that the text describes the”Ultimate Way” which will not change throughout the flow of time.( I feel that this is the predominant thought behind the Logo and the intent of the DI) This same character was later appropriated to translate the Sanskrit word ‘sūtra’ into Chinese in reference to Buddhist scripture. In this sense the two concepts, in as much as they mean ‘treatise,’ ‘great teaching,’ or ‘canonical scripture,’ are equivalent.
The conception behind this title, thus, is profound. It has three implications:
- Simplicity - the root of the substance. The fundamental law underlying everything in the universe is utterly plain and simple, no matter how abstruse or complex some things may appear to be.
- Variability - the use of the substance. Everything in the universe is continually changing. By comprehending this one may realize the importance of flexibility in life and may thus cultivate the proper attitude for dealing with a multiplicity of diverse situations.
- Persistency - the essence of the substance. While everything in the universe seems to be changing, among the changing tides there is a persistent principle, a central rule, which does not vary with space and time.
I believe that #3 is what the DI are vested in; the Island, the “time slip” The Snow Globe effect, as well as many others. If our theories are close to their mark, then this may lead to adding more pieces of the puzzle. I think the DI have discovered this #3 persistency and how to keep the constant in their grand experiment.
The trigrams themselves are very important in their meanings.from the way they are arranged and to the binary value attached to each one. |=1, :=0(The binary arrangement of hexagrams is associated with the famous Chinese scholar and philosopher Shao Yong in the 11th century. He displayed it in two different formats, a circle, and a rectangular block. Thus, he clearly understood the sequence represented a logical progression of values. However, while it is true that these sequences do represent the values 0 through 63 in a binary display, there is no evidence that Shao understood that the numbers could be used in computations such as addition or subtraction.) these are the 8 trigrams that make up the Bagua, they can be combined to create hexagrams (doubling) therefore creating 64 possible outcomes. or a value of 0-63 and upper and lower value. I will just put the binary at the end of each. If you apply the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 to the hexagrams you get some very interesting results
4- Hexagram 4 is named (meng), “Enveloping”. Other variations include “youthful folly”, “the young shoot”, and “discovering”. 4=:|:::|= 010001
8- Hexagram 8 is named 比 (bi), “Grouping”. Other variations include “holding together” and “alliance”. 8=::::|: = 000010
15- Hexagram 15 is named 謙 (qian), “Humbling”. Other variations include “modesty”. 15= ::|::: = 001000
16- Hexagram 16 is named 豫 (yu), “Providing-For”. Other variations include “enthusiasm” and “excess”. 16= :::|:: = 000100
15 - 16 Modesty to Enthusiasm A Seeker walking his own path will feel enthused. Like a car going down hill, the easy run can pick up dangerous speed and go over a sudden curve. Likewise, too much enthusiasm can blow one off the path.
23- Hexagram 23 is named 剝 (bol), “Stripping”. Other variations include “splitting apart” and “flaying”. 23= :::::| = 000001
42- Hexagram 42 is named 益 (yi), “Augmenting”. Other variations include “increase”. 42= |:::||
Each trigram can be broken down into computer language. This string of code is what I believe was holding the electromagnetic anomoly in place. 010001 000010 001000 000100 000001 100011 or 4 8 15 16 23 42. Found in the same trigrams as their logo. The lost experience claims they are the Valenzetti numbers I think it is all tied together and we’ll see more unfold as the show continues.

well the Genetic code that all Life is based on ALSO has the same number of outcomes 64!
There are 4 nucleotides (A, T, G, C), each one is specifically coded by a triplet-codon made up of three of these nucleotides, with each triple coding for a specific amino acid e.g AAU (Asparagine), GGC (Glycine), etc etc
so there are 4³ = 64 different codon combinations possible
A T C G = 4 different nucleotides
and so its 4 x 4 x 4 possible combinations you can see them all here:

That is what I’m talking about!!! Solar nice link!! I love the medical guys that can explain all DNA and the real medical end of all these theories. From What you said Solar it could be related. We have some people on the Island with some very interesting characteristics. Non aging, Fast aging, psychic, Healing. I think it is very logical that if you can have 64 combinations why not, I Ching after all, was the very first binary code. maybe they have discovered a way to alter DNA on the Island through experimental technology. Or quite possibly the Island itself is altering peoples DNA Locke, Rose, Naomi, Mikial, and we are just observing these changes. Also could alter people mentally like bringing forward or opening up dorment or low acting psychic abilities, Walt, Desmond. I love the discussion

Occam, there is no specific numbering to the triplet code unfortunately, but there is specific codes for specific amnio-acids. Thanks for reading that theory by the way, and welcome back if you don’t mind me saying!

addendum! some users might see that in the triplet code that the ‘T’ is missing, it’s just that that in RNA, ‘T’ is replaced by ‘U’ (Uracil) but it represents ‘T’ just in an ‘anti-sense’ like a photo-negative.

ok they put an implant in Claire and “set it off” and it caused her to get extremely ill very quickly. now that suggest nano technology or and organic chip of sorts. Scientists have been working on organic micro-chips for a while. they could have easily used something of this nature. Brains are just big organic computers to tell our bodies to do different things. Can you imagine the effect of genetic manipulation transferred through an organic computer; The human Brain.

Jedi: After “The Orchid” video, I’m starting to give more credit to nanobots. Lindelof debunked Smokey as a swarm of nanobots, but said —or let us guess— nanobots could be part of the equation, so I jumped from there to implants. Maybe Claire wasn’t sick at all, maybe she just felt sick due to the nanobot sending “sick messages” to her brain. After all, that was just a plot to make the Losties accept Juliet as one of them…
Oh, and sham, it seems we are using all of our brain, just not all at the same time. If we did, there would be an “overload”. Prof gave me some great links on it. I have been studying Asian culture for a long time. One of my best friends is full Chinese with a family estate still in Bejing, A very old powerful family in China. So I got first hand experience and research data. thanks again guys for the great discussion. I will keep it updated as I figure out more with the trigrams vs binary.

great job! a coworker of mine who i was showing pictures from lost totally pointed this out and he’s never seen the show before. i didn’t even take the time to read into it, but instead checked to see if someone had already brought up an explanation here. this just completely blows my mind. there are so many, minute details in play in the show. it’s sometimes impossible to try and imagine how they’ll all come together.
