This episode seems to be all about control—control of knowledge, of energy, of danger, and probably most important of the fulfillment of other’s people’s wants and desires.

The central analogy I took to be Chrnobyl—you have vast amounts of energy in nuclear power. You try to harness and control it, and you get an explosion which has to be covered over with concrete. You have some kind of vast energy harnessed by DI which they are trying to control through the numbers—there’s been one incident already resulting in a similar concrete pour. Hurley is controlling this vast amount of food (under Jack’s orders) and is tempted also to blow it up, because you can’t control wants and desires of others without them hating you. But the right solution is reached there—no explosion, no concrete pour on the food. Answer—give up the control. Maybe the numbers are similarly about controlling wants/desires—some means of harnessing the synchronic to bring about what one wants? Magic Box? And maybe what happened when Des turned the key is similar to Hurley distributing the food—the control over that synchronic energy from the numbers was spread out and distributed?

Controllers: Hurley’s boss using surveillance. Jack not wanting any supplies given out or information. Ana-Lucia-Sawyer isn’t allowed to talk or ask questions. Locke as far as setting up shifts on the numbers.

Anit-Control: Rose and Locke when it comes to the information.

Hurley winning the lottery gives him confidence to quit his job (Kate and Locke both refer to the hatch activities as having jobs again), ask the girl out, commit vandalism against old boss. The money releases his desire—freedom—but then exerts a new control. The control of having to fulfill everyone’s desires. (O, that must be Jesus [on the telephone…])

Desire and control of desire means trying to control what happens in the future. Rose is notably in the present moment. (She and I are both doing laundry today.) “Don’t you want to know?” “It’s not gonna help me get this laundry done.” “Well actually…”

Kate emerging from the shower, seen by Jack,…desire, control, explosions—need I say more?

A few other thoughts: Why is it Jin that has the magic pee? Sawyer has way too many opportunitys to say S of a B. Geothermal pipes—source is the volcano? Apollo Bars—what is up with them, and why, when Kate escaped in the last ep did she grab as many as she could as her first action?

Jaz, you rock. I wish I knew the answers to all of those questions.

Jazzie I love it. You make an excellent case for the relinquishing of control - although I wouldn’t want you in charge of my local nuclear power station ;-)

    thanks guys, and mrs.—LOL-no worries

And I’ve just realized—Jin hasn’t relinquished his control of the magic pee—I want to see THAT episode

great post Jaz, you nailed this episode. Hurley’s character developed tremendously in this ep. thanks for the post

Hi Jaz, great analysis….one thing that struck me as odd in this episode is when Jack and Sayid are beneath the floor searching for clues as to what the magnetic source is…Didn’t they see the failsafe? Afterall, they were down there scouting around, seems like they would’ve ran across it. Probley doesn’t mean anything, I just thought it was strange.

  6. Nickee Sep 8, 2007 3:59 p.m. Comment: 6

Oh, and That’s a great idea about the volcano being the possible power source of the geothermal pipes…

  7. Stip Sep 8, 2007 4:37 p.m. Comment: 7

Nice Jaz. I watched that episode asking myself “What is Jaz gonna see that I don’t see?” and the symbolism of control totally escaped me. Well done. +1

Control the power. Both electromagnetic and human desire (loved your assessment of Jack n Kate’s shower scene.)

What stuck out for me was Sayid’s declaration that a geothermal generator was behind the concrete. Since Dr.Candle said electromagnetic experiments were being conducted from this specific sector of the island, I always surmised it was tapping into the power of the meteor that supposedly hit the island (when I don’t know).

I think Sayid making the announcement is significant. He is their technology expert and the writer’s use him to convey information like that (Naomi’s cell phone) to us. So I think we should hold it as fact that there is a humongous generator behind that concrete.

I suggest the “incident” is why Dharma had to seal/wall it off - on all sides - with concrete - to contain the energy. Since they couldn’t stop the buildup, they found a way to discharge it: the button

  8. Stip Sep 8, 2007 4:48 p.m. Comment: 8

After posting my 4:37 comment, another brainwave hit me: maybe “the incident” explains some of the timeline betewwn the Dr.Marvin Candle orientation films.

What if the timing of the Dr. Candle films is significant?

We know that The Pearl station, during the heydays of DI, was a fake observation station because the neumatic tubes were ejected into the jungle where they were never expected to be found. But what if If the Pearl orientation film was made BEFORE the Swan’s?

In the Swan video, Dr.Candle has lost use of his left arm. I deduce he lost it as a result of “the incident” - and thus why the Swan video had to include the instructions to discharge the energy buildup. Therefore I conclude the Pearl video had to predate the Swan video.

So The Pearl could have been a Skinner experiment - at one time - but stopped being so after the incident. This is all during the days of Dharma.

Post the purge, the Dr.Candle videos became mute, extinct, no longer applicable. Ben simply took over the DI infrastructure and used it for different purposes.

Lets pretend im dumb, (shut up-all of you that were going to say something) so jazz…

at the end, you talk about jack seeing kate after her shower…im curious as to what explosion you were referring to there.:)

    Highshool humor aside… ;)

    Shame on you TT.

    Great thoughts jaz.

OK guys, Control yourselves! Take a Cold Shower…

And TT it’s the explosion that never was, ‘cause Jack has more control than, ahem, some people…

(Heh, suddenly a pun on Jack’s name has occurred to me ;-))

Stip—hee—that is sweet (the WWJS—What would Jaz see)—and of course, I didn’t pick up on some of those things you mentioned. I think you are completely right on the timing of the videos. When was there reference to a meteor crash, though? I didn’t remember that.

That was awesome. No matter how good Artificial Intelligence becomes they’ll never be able to build a robot to analyse with such depth & clarity.

Good take on the Volcano and yeah! What IS up with them Apollo Bars!

Shame on me, okay, I can accept that…

But I had to, it was just hanging there waiting…:)

Great as usual Jaz….I love your possible explanation of what happened when Des turned the failsafe key and the possible reason for the numbers.

Control seems to be a big issue and it s something you definitely have to let go of if you want synchronicity to do its work.

  16. Stip Sep 8, 2007 10:37 p.m. Comment: 16

Jaz: I read in a LT thread somewhere - back in June - that someone saw a closeup of Rousseau’s map that had some notation about location fo the meteor impact. Sorry, I can’t provide a link :-(

And Jaz…erm…careful with the sly double entendres with Jack. He is a shepherd after all. Moses. Parting the red sea. Waving his great staff before Pharoa….riiiiight!

magic pee - in a million years, I could never have come up with that.

TT: dude, what was just hanging there?

    Attention Sigmund! Come in Sigmund!

Stip ducks to avoid dish, crystal, monitors…

Don’t worry if you get hit Stip, we calways try summoning Jin.

Oh and thanks for the warning about Jack, yeah right, he’s Moses, he might smite me with that staff. Um…didn’t he do some parlor trick where it turned into a snake?

sigh… you people crack me up!

Jaz: Regarding the “Kate & Jack Shower Scene”, I love those kind of scenes but not for the same reasons as say, TT and Sham…. not for the “physical” aspects but more for the psychological and emotional aspects of attraction. The whole subject of attraction intrigues me. (Sorry this is where I get a little nerdy about this because I am actually referring to the biological and scientific aspects of attraction…you know chemicals and hormones and brain activity stuff.) So I just wonder what causes chemistry between people? Why do we react to some people and not others? I mean, what is actually taking place in our brain when this occurs? Does anyone know? hmm…I wonder if the electromagnetic forces on the island have any affect on sexual chemistry and attraction. I hope I’m making sense… :)

ok so you just described the certain factors that can influence the “magic” from taking place or not….but what I am curious about is what exactly takes place physically when this “magic” begins? Like in our brains and with certain chemicals etc.

I guess to me there’s so much that comes before that (and a very significant thing that comes after, i.e. choice) that the chemical wherewithal is academic.

Academic“…well, duh!!! That’s what I meant by saying that this is where I get a little nerdy about this topic…. It’s this aspect that I want to understand. I don’t have any problems with the “nonacademic” aspects… :)

Guys… noone else noticed how weird was Hurley’s dream? I mean, Jin speaks English —ok, that’s not so weird, and it’s even a bit premonitory, as we discover later. But, Hurley speaks in Korean? The chicken guy?? Everything is going to change??

    Come on!

  35. Occam Sep 10, 2007 7:58 a.m. Comment: 35

I think Hurley takes that “everything is going to change” too personal. In his mind, it’s winning the lottery all over again —just this time he “wins” all the food in the Island.

Lottery brought him bad luck, and carried friends away —or killed them. And it’s all the numbers fault… Same numbers ‘written’ on the hatch. Same numbers they keep entering the friggin’ computer every 108 friggin’ minutes. And it was his shift, also.

    Too much pressure, I guess…

Apollo Bars—what is up with them, and why, when Kate escaped in the last ep did she grab as many as she could as her first action?”

I’m a Lost newbie and have just made it through the first four episodes of season 2. Something struck me as I watched Everyone Hates Hugo… the Apollo bars.

Thanks to reading “BenLinusDharma108” comments on the Ultimate Theory ( http://lost-theories.com/theories/2007/sep/24/ultimate-theory-philosophers-m/ ) I remembered this… (although it was a spoiler of things to come for me… oh well)

…the four-toed statue and the temple, there’s a theory that it is from the Colossus of Rhodes, which apparently lost a toe and was broken. the Colossus represented APOLLO (!!), and the Temple of Artemis (Apollo’s twin sister) was very close to the colossus (referring to the Temple Ben mentions). Both the Colossus and Temple were part of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, and guess what other statue is based on the colossus? the Statue of Liberty! there are more details about this theory, including Sun was the first to see the statue (Apollo is the god of the Sun) ”

So there is a connection to me… between them finding Apollo bars, the statue, the temple, the island. What the connection is I am unsure as of yet and haven’t been through enough episodes to create a well-designed theory.

    Anyone have thoughts on this?
