first consider the losties as a tribe to viewed as one group. i know there are conflicting ideals and motives within, but nevertheless they are a tribe and their individual actions accumulate to a consequesnce for their whole tribe. keep that in mind and jump back to when they were opening the swan door. locke had to keep the faith and with this faith- fate led him to open the door. seemingly his strong faith payed off and gifted him with the material convieniences and items within. once he lost the faith and refused to push the button, fate had its way and took all the gifts it bestowed on the once faithful tribe away for not believing. that’s one way of looking at it. however the actuality was that walt was right in warning against its opening. locke was blinded by his faith and ignored when fate led him to the pearl in his vision. he was to enter there first. had he listened closer to fate which is flippant and dispassionate rather than faith which is determinative and very passionate, he would have entered the pearl and been greeted with nothing but cameras, which are symbolic of true understanding.there are no distractions or vices within the pearl just understanding symbolized by the cameras. there were no record players, showers or guns just vision- just clear honest insight, he would have been “illuminated” to the true nature of the swan and etc. instead his “blind” faith led him to the swan where he was further distracted by material possesions confusing him and convincing him he did the right thing. within the swan they became prisoners and slaves to their own convieniences, these attachents symbolized by the computer-i.e. technology, forced them to serve the material items under fearful consequence. once he was accustomed to this way when he went to the pearl and finally became illuminated to the true nature of things his preconditioning in the swan made it too hard for him to cope with the harsh truth, much like people will go against the truth if it risks security and peace of mind. eko who had pure faith and was not pleased or distracted or tainted by the swan kept the faith that superceeds any hatch or itme or circumstance but it is unwaiverable and he continued to push the button knowing it to be an act of his faith that needed to be exercised to show the faithless, locke, the way they had strayed from. locke ignored this faith and his own fate and went on a jack trip of self-determinism this led him to the failure of pushing the button and starting back over again with another vision that had boone in it much like the first this time i think he gotthe jist of it a bit better and he is on the noble path.

Like it Frogo, like it. I also thought when Locke and Eko discovered the Pearl beneath the crashed plane that Locke was in fact supposed to find the Pearl hatch in Deus Ex Machina, but he took his dream literally and was too focused on the plane.

frogo: Great post! Quite a lot of thought and hard work went into that! +1 for a job well done.

Prof: How did I miss that theory? I thought I went back and read all of yours. I was still under the assumption that Desmond did bring the plane down! Now I’ve got to go back and make sure I didn’t miss any others!!

Ah, well Annie… the question of how the plane was brought down… that’s a whole other can of worms, isn’t it? :-) But it’s true… if the writers intend for us to believe Desmond caused the plane to come down it does throw a tiny wrench in things, but not a major one. Desmond still distracted John from getting to the Pearl first, in my opinion… and in frogo’s opinion as well, it seems. :-)

And thanks for the vote of confidence re: reading my theories. I know there are a lot of them! :-)

You’re most kind to say so, Annie… I’m sure I could say the same of you if you’d be so kind as to grace us with a theory… :-)

Prof: Actually, lockeko suggested the same thing awhile ago and I worked on one. But the site wouldn’t let me post it.

I’m not on a real computer I’m on webtv, which is, if you’re not familiar with it, a box attached to your TV that you use as a screen and a wireless keyboard. It is very limited in it’s use though. There are many sites I cannot get into, I don’t have audio or video so that’s why I don’t frequent CF. Not too much fun just wondering what everyone else is listening to!!

But I did have my computer desk put together on Saturday and the cable company is supposed to be coming out this week to connect my brandy new Dell. So, I may have a theory for you soon!

    Frogo,

That’s an interesting take on John and his relationship with the Swan. +1

    The question is…

Someone or something was pushing Locke to see the Pearl station. If Locke would have seen the Orientation Film of the Pearl he probably would have not been interested in opening the Swan. Which would lead Desmond to commit suicide (since he didn’t do it when he heard Locke scream after Boone’s dead).

    Now:

    1) What would have happened if Desmond committed suicide? The button would not be pushed so what would have happened with the Island? I can’t answer this :(

    2) Who puts these visions / dreams into Locke’s head? I believe it is the same that whisper, or change into horses … the smokies. See my theory about it (http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/aug/31/what-if-there-no-smokey-smokie/). I believe they have their own agenda and reasons that we will understand in the next seasons.
