As we all know its been researched that women on the Island die when trying to give birth, this is shown to us in mainly Juliet’s flashbacks such as “One of Us” (3.16) and is made apparent to us again in Sun’s episode “D.O.C” (3.18). My belief is that the Island sustains a sort of anti-life force; making it possible for Claire, who conceived her baby OFF of the Island, to give birth healthily, “Do No Harm” (1.20). And for women like Sun and the Others’ previous subjects to be in danger.

This idea came to me when watching Ben’s flashback in “The Man Behind the Curtain” (3.20) When young Ben escapes into the jungle looking for his mother he comes into contact with a ‘hostile’ who undeniably resembles, Ben’s current Other , Richard. Who hasn’t seemed to have aged in the time that Ben has grown up, Ben is unaffected by this anti-ageing factor as he did confess to Locke that he ”wasn’t born on the Island” Hence removing him from this process. Richard would be in his late 50’s- early 60’s by now if people born of the Island aged naturally. A second possible subject could be Claire’s baby Aaron or Danielle’s daughter Alex, both of whom haven’t grown to a considerable age to make any significance. The rest of the Others, as Ben also stated to Locke in “The Man Behind the Curtain” (3.20), were ‘brought’ to the Island therefore indicating they were born elsewhere. Having only Richard as a known ‘hostile’ or ‘native’ of the Island, its hard to solidify this theory until time passes. Since Ben killed all of his people in order to join the hostiles, there’s no way of knowing if any of them were born on the Island. This theory therefore is purely based on the complete anamoly that Richard has not got older.
