I am mightily looking forward to seeing what possible (number 8) rabbit they are going to pull out of the hat for the start of Season Four to make all our jaws drop to the floor. . .

As a bit of fun, a friend and I began touting around ideas about what we thought the pre-title opening would be for Season Four of Lost. Each season’s opening has generally tried to pull a trick of convincing us we’re not on the Island before revealing that we in fact are. To wit:
Season One: Suited Jack lying in the trees, revealed to be a passenger of a crash-landed aircraft, now marooned on the Island.
Season Two: Desmond going about a ‘morning’ routine of breakfast, shower and exercising, revealed to be inside the Swan Station within the hatch on the Island.
Season Three: Book Group meeting with Juliet and the rest of the white picket fence neighbourhood, revealed to be The Others at ‘the barracks’ on the Island.
Season Three (post-hiatus): Inverted the standard trick by convincing us we were with Juliet on the Island (hi Ethan!) only to reveal we were, in fact, in Miami.
I don’t know about you, but I am mightily looking forward to seeing what possible (number 8) rabbit they are going to pull out of the hat for the start of Season Four to make all our jaws drop to the floor like they’ve continually been managing so far. That said, here’s my best effort (probably revealing why I am better at watching Lost than I would be writing it).
We open on the close-up of an eye, pulling back to reveal a man’s face we don’t recognise. He’s in a small, wooden room, alone, fiddling with rows of test tubes on a wooden bench. Enter Richard Alpert. There’s brief conversation as the man we don’t recognise hints at some strange finding he has discoverd with his experimentation, but Alpert has something more pressing to say. “I think you should come and see this.”
The two leave the room, and suddenly we realise they are on board a ship. Not just any ship. It’s the Black Rock. Up on deck, we follow the man we don’t recognise as he sees for the first time the Island we know all too well in front of him. Alpert claps a hand on the man’s shoulder and says, “We’re here.”
And then we pan across the Island a little, seeing it as the man sees it, and there we see the four-toed statue standing on the shore. Only, as the camera rises, we see the four-toed statue is fully complete; a giant figure towering over the Black Rock ship that sails just before it.
Back to Alpert and the man, both staring at the statue and then turning to smile at one another. Richard then says, “Looks like you were right all along, Jacob.”

That was my effort. As said, just a bit of fun. I’d love to hear other people’s ideas.
I like it.
I would love that; I really want to know more about Richard-unfortunately isn’t the actor who plays Richard on another show or something? I thought there was a reason he might not be around much this season.
Avast ye matey!
Wouldn’t that be rich? I wouldn’t doubt it a bit.
jaz, yes, and the show is “Cane”. Go figure…
Angelo, I concur with the “Three Amigos”. Very entertaining thoughts about Alpert! You never know! +1
Angelo, +1 again! lol I only wish it would open like that!!
I only disagree with one thing. I think you’d make a better writer than watcher. :-)
btw, what do you all think of Cane??? The reviews (unfortunately) look pretty good, but I can’t get into it. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s just not doing it for me.
I think it is a Sopranos wannabe.
AC I like it. My esteemed comrades have already said it really so I concur. +1
Kat: Edited the Penny error (figured I’d mention it to prevent your comment looking insane). Weirdly, I actually thought Juliet WAS Penny the first time I saw this sequence. Funny how my brain doesn’t let go of that. . .
Annie: Flattery will get you everywhere. I’ll “+1” first chance I get!
Not seen Cane. I am in the UK so have to make extra special effort to check out U.S. shows that are premiered there. So far, I’ve not got the inclination. . .
Everyone else: cheers!
OK AC that’s a better version than last I heard it. So grudgingly +1. Still think seeing smokie place Jack in the jungle would make a better start.
LJ - that’ll be the very end of the last series. Mark my words. And then the camera will close up on his eye, pull back, and finish where it began.
I like your idea. +1 Here’s mine:
We open on closed eye of a man lying in a bunk. An alarm clock sounds, and the eye opens. We pan back to see a man we don’t recognize. He reaches to his nightstand and picks up the sweetest MP3 player you’ve ever seen, and we see him select “Highway to the Danger Zone”, and the music overwhelms the sound of him brushing his teeth and getting dressed.
A red light begins flashing in the room, and a much louder alarm sounds, drowning out the music. The man rips out his ear buds, quickly dons a grey body suit, and runs down a long grey corridor and up a flight of stairs into daylight. (Was he in a hatch?) He grabs a helmet from a long row of helmets on a nearby platform, and we see an ordered line of military men, armed with M16’s, receiving parachutes and marching in line on to large helicopers. We see our mystery man don his helmet, and we see it is identical to Naomi’s. He runs to the pilot chair of a large helicoper, enters numbers into a computer, and receives unspecified instructions. He requests permission to take off, and is granted it immediately. As he takes off, we pan out further and see that he is on a freighter. The camera rotates around the helicoper, showing a setting sun, and then Islands come into view, and the helicoper flies directly towards them. As it distances itself from the camera, we see fifteen other helicopers come from the lef t and right of the screen, all heading for the same place.
We hear a transmission, “This is not a drill, boys, and this might be our only chance at this! Let’s get the job done!”
LOST card.
Karmavore - yours go full throttle for an explosive start. I like it. I’d see an opening like THAT and be getting all excited, strapping myself in for the thrills about to come. Good stuff.
karmavore, I agree, good stuff!!!
Karmavore, I really like it, but to me it would be too expected. The Lost crew like to keep us guessing with the opening credits of a series, and to be honest the freighter and “that” call is going to be the only thing in my mind when Series 4 begins to air. So to show the freighter and people going to the island is kind of, well obvious if you get my meaning. Although as others have said it certainly would have a wow factor, and heighten the view of the importance of the island to the outside world.
But I for one would much prefer something I haven’t seen before or was not expecting much like the starts to series 2 and 3. Perhaps highlighting a mole or flashing back to a previously unheard but critical conversation that changes the way we perceive the main characters.
Alternatively a series start about Michael and Walt would be excellent.
I think the start’s going to be a flashforward. Probably something that makes us think it’s on the island (trees, maybe?), but then something very not-islandy happens. Haven’t thought about whose it might be (I don’t think it’ll beJack though, cos it ended with him), but I’m crossing my fingers for Hurley since he’s my favourite character. Of course, that would mean that he got off the island, and I haven’t thought at all about that…
