I’ve been watching series 3 a lot lately, and I think I’ve come up with a few ideas about ageing and pregnancy issues on the island.

I am working from the idea that somebody else on the site said about Jacob possibly being an alchemist, I get the impression hes been in charge of the Others for a very long time, and to do that he must have been special in some way.

Aside from turning base metal into gold, alchemy also had the goals of creating an elixer of life and of creating an artificial life (Hommunculus). It is said that in order to achieve those goals an alchemist would need to aquire the philosophers stone.

The jars of liquid in Jacobs house point to some form of primitive experimentation. I believe Jacob is a survivor of the Black Rock an alchemist who had contracted Magnus Hanso’s company to bring slaves to the island and mine the black rocks. (Philosophers Stones)

Jacob made his home on the island and began to conduct experiments and eventually he created the elixer, he and the rest of the survivors regularly took the mixture and they stayed the same age. Over the years other boats and eventually planes began to crash on the island, Jacobs people either killed these people if they were considered bad or inducted those they considered good into their society and shared the elixer with them. I believe Richard arrived around about this time, most people think Richard arrived on the Black Rock, that idea doesn’t work for me, as Richard is an american, and the Black Rock sailed from Porstmouth (England) and is unlikely to have had an American crew member. So Richard no doubt came from an American plane or boat, he was inducted and the elixer shared with him also.

Then Dharma arrived and they made contact with Jacobs people, Jacob told them they could not study the island and asked them to leave, but Dharma armed their people and went ahead with the experiments, they interrogated some of Jacobs people and learned about the Elixer and eventually obtained some which they studied and replicated for testing on their own people.

I believe we have seen this Elixer as the sickness vaccine. I was thinking perhaps Dharma wasn’t using the vaccine to make people believe in the sickness, but using the sickness to make people take the vaccine.

This could be the answer to why people such as Richard haven’t aged and why the pregnant women die. Kelvin mentioned to Desmond that he should inject himself with the vaccine every 9 days, perhaps the number 9 is clue pointing us to the pregancy issuses? Maybe the ‘elixer’ keeps people young by causing their cells to regress to the state they were in 9 days previously and this causes serious complications when used on pregnant women. Although neither the Hostiles nor Dharma had noticed the connection (Hostiles didn’t have the knowledge and Dharma wasn’t using the vaccine for long enough)

I know there are a lot of holes in this such as why hasn’t Ben aged at all? Well, I noticed in The Man Behind the Curtain at the Dharma induction we see people recieving shots but we never see Ben or Roger get one. I have the idea that there was a rigid social structure within Dharma society and as Roger was just a lowly work man Dharma considered him and his son as unworthy, and Ben only gained access to the vaccine after the purge when Richard made him aware of it’s importance.

Another thing is I don’t know if anyone else spotted this but, after the Hostiles have gassed all the people in the barracks we see a young girl that looks like Annie lying face down on the green. Perhaps that was Annie? Maybe her family were high enough on the social ladder to be privy to the vaccine and this was what finally tipped Ben over the edge, the thought that he would grow old while Annie would stay young?

I know its a bit ‘out there’ , so feel free to criticise.

Nice play off the alchemy idea CPB. I especially like the idea that the vaccine may actually be the elixir. +1 from me

thanks jaz, was also going to mention that perhaps smokie is the Hommunculus, but I’ve nothing really to back that up with! Cheers for the point.

CPB, I’m with jaz. Nice work and explains the ‘sickness’ too. +1

Very good. I especially liked the part about Annie remaining a child while Ben aged as sending him over the edge.

Good theory. I still kind of wonder why the Hostiles “didn’t” know about Desmond and the other Swan members. Speaking of the swan, how would that tie in to what Dharma would have been doing? If Dharma is interested in the elixer, what does the button do? Do you think that Dharma was doing other experiments too? I think this theory could easily fit in with the other theories about the island. +1

CPB I see you have your detractors. Looks like its got itself a new ID!

Now then, the theory. Very good. I love the idea of the elixir of life and I think the idea that it works by resetting by nine days fits very well with what we saw in the orchid video. Perhaps those who take it have to allow themselves to mature to a certain age before they are allowed to take it. I don’t know if you caught Solar’s theory about cell renewal but if you could blend the two ideas I think it would work very well.

Agreed - excellent theory. IF the cell regeneration was based on a nine day curve that would mean that people taking it would still age but at 1/9 their normal rate. Essentially you would live 9 lifetimes in the course of 1. Or to put it another way, you would live 9 lives in a single lifetime. Maybe the recurring theme of cats is a clue. Good job. +1

    Great theory — quite plausible!

An adjunct to your theory: To become the supernatural or special being he clearly is, perhaps Jacob — the elixir’s creator — had more of it than anyone else, or perhaps a special blend, and this is what gave him his powers.

Or, your theory not taken into account: Maybe Jacob is trapped in a space/time or transdimensional vortex or something…

One question, though: do you think that The Others are still using the elixir themselves?

If I stay on this site too long, will I start believing in modern day actually successful alchemists, too?

Do you guys really think that there is going to be a scene where Jack the scientist has a showdown with the magical alchemist in a long robe and pointy hat?

I’m outta here. There has to be a LOST theory site where this nonsense gets filtered.
