I have an idea that the numbers are not an equation as such but a series of years old or life stages 4yo 8yo 15yo 16yo 23yo 42yo
For the following to make sense some parts of my first theory (http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/oct/15/right-bear-children/) need to be true. I think the numbers refer to the proposed age or age ranges when humans are assessed/tested to decide his/her role in society (usefulness/job/right to breed). Similar to Brave New World, a novel by Aldous Huxley.
Or possibly stages of moral development? Kohlberg theorised that “moral reasoning, which is the basis for ethical behavior, has SIX identifiable developmental constructive stages” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kohlberg’sstagesofmoraldevelopment
Level 1 (Pre-Conventional)
1. Obedience and punishment orientation
2. Self-interest orientation
( What's in it for me?)
Level 2 (Conventional)
3. Interpersonal accord and conformity
( The good boy/good girl attitude)
4. Authority and social-order maintaining orientation
( Law and order morality)
Level 3 (Post-Conventional)
5. Social contract orientation
6. Universal ethical principles
This is just an little idea, from what I can gather the numbers may never be fully explained.
The meaning of the numbers aside, could these numbers simply be a calling card to those who are familiar with the greater plan?
I will work on this more but just wanted to throw it out ; )
WOW that is really something to think about early in the morning! I thought that the writers said the numbers are the Valenzetti equation though. Whatever, I like your idea better. +1
The Valenzetti equation was revealed in The Lost Experience, if I remember correctly. Although the events in TLE mesh nicely with the show itself, I’m not sure if all events are supposed to be taken literally with regards to the show. Cuse and Lindelof have tip-toed around this question in the Podcasts I’ve listened to.
Valenzetti equation or not, I think this is a great idea. Great Thoughts +1
Very out of the box thinking, fivestades. :-) I think it’s unlikely, though.
Kat, how would Hurley winning the lottery with the numbers tie in?? I like what you’re saying.
…….If the numbers are a calling card to inform ‘special people’ of the location of the island. Any outsider e.g Leonard, Sam publicly speaking of these numbers would be in trouble they were possibly non fatally silenced. Hurley then came into knowledge of these numbers……..maybe the lotto win was a coincidence, but the public knowledge of them meant ‘the organisation’ wanted him to never speak of the numbers again. Hence Leonard ‘frantically warned Hurley of the dangers the numbers carried’ post public lotto win.
Alternatively…..In an elaborate plot to get all losties on the plane , Hurleys process was to make him win the lotto……..so he would alter his life making it easier to get him naturally airborne. Who says the ‘organisation’ doesn’t have access to control the lottery?
Five, I think you may be onto something, here! If you look at changing the equation, it makes sense that it does have something to do with changing the reaction of mankind’s attitudes, in a broad range of spectrums. Nice job! +1
Fivestades, sorry I directed my question to Kat, it was early and I didn’t see that part of your theory at the end.
Thanks for responding anyway, and I do like that part of your theory. Your explanation about Hurley makes sense. Actually I think that part of the theory is fascinating. The numbers being a calling card…
Well, you won me over with that, you earned your +1. Now that I’m awake!!!!
guys I’m confused about the overall timeline. I thought Hugo went to the sanitorium because of the bad luck he associated with the numbers. But then I also thought he picked the numbers because of what he learned from Lenny at the hospital. So, did he go mental before or after winning the lottery? Please Help.
He met Lenny in the hospital when committed by his mother (pre-numbers mental), learned of the numbers, tried them on release , won lotto, then re-visited when things started going wrong.
Hey five, I’m with a lot of other folks in liking the calling card idea. I’ve often thought that the numbers being used for the lotto, and therefore entered one presumes on a lot of computers, must mean something. Also remember the reference to opening the box. Do you think some of the corporations opened the box before Hurley even heard of the numbers?
Hi Jaz, Yeah I’m sure sure even Leonard may have experienced the wrath of ‘opening the box’ when he said it to Hurley. Either experienced it himself or through his colleague Sam Toomey. But I think the numbers and their effect have certainly been seen in ‘our world’ before Hurley dealt with them.
