Sorry if this has been discussed before, or if it sounds stupid.
Ok, so we know that libby’s husband is dead (from the flashback of her giving desmond her husband’s boat), and is called David (dave).
We also learn in hurley’s flashback that hurley killed 4 people when he stepped onto a pier (or something) at a party, and the pier collapsed, causing hurley to get depressed and put in the mental hospital.
My theory is that Libby’s husband david was one of the people who died when hurley stepped onto the pier. This caused both Hurley and Libby to end up in the mental hospital. Hurley’s mind then created an imaginary david, who’s purpose was to keep Hurley fat, as a form of self-punishment for causing the accident.
If this is true, there could be several reasons for libby taking an interest in Hurley when they meet on the island.
1- libby was pretending to like him, so she could get close and pick the ideal time to get her revenge. (don’t really think this myself, as libby appeared to genially like Hurley)
2- It could be chance the of all the people in the world libby falls for her husband’s killer. (A good lost style twist)
As for the dave on the island, I’m not sure if I think he was the black smoke, or Hurley punishing himself because he doesn’t think he deserve a woman like libby.

It’s an interesting theory. It might explain why Libby was in the hospital if her husband had just died and she was grieving to the point of severe depression (if that’s what she was suffering from). But I don’t think it would be smart of the staff there to allow Libby to encounter a living reminder of the potential cause of her grief. Dave and Hurley possibly knowing each other would be a great link, though. Guess we’ll find out in February at the soonest.
…and I was trying to think how this would impact Libby’s behavior when she meets Desmond (if the meeting happened after, I’m not sure) and on the island, but I guess all I can say is that she recovered pretty well…no relapse after the traumatic crash and others stuff
Welcome, Law! You make some good observations, especially about Hurley possibly being responsible for Libby’s hubbies death! Quite possible!
I have thought about Hurley’s friend Dave and feel that he is a figment of Hurley’s imagination, for the purpose of Hurley coping with his grief over the deaths, he feels responsible for causing. Hurley always had weight problems, since his Dad left home when he was still a child, so I don’t think it has anything to do with that! Nice post! +1

When the deck collapsed, Johnny is one of the people killed. Not only that, but it occurs shortly after Hurley wished Johnny dead for having stolen Starla from here. All this a la Juliette and Edmund Burke’s death.
I thought about that too Bakunin, but I suppose Dave could have gone on a whim without telling Libby? Maybe Libby was too devastated to look into the details of who’s party it was or how it happened?
This would be an interesting LOST like twist and connection. I guess we will find out. We are supposed to find out more about Libby’s back story. Very creative law!

Welcome, law. Some good thoughts, but Libby*s husband Dave died because he was sick. So the two are not the same.
I meant David not Dave in my post by the way. I answer to both in real life so there isn’t much of a distinction to me. :)
I’m plussing this because I’ve been working on a theory that DAVE (not Libby’s husband) was an actual friend of Hurley’s and was accidentally killed when Hurley stepped on the balcony. Crap! I haven’t posted a theory in a long time either.

As a side note. and these are BIG if’s……..with regards to Libby, i think she was either 1)in the Mental hospital because of the death of her husband, 2) working for DI and there to watch Leonard (the number guy whom I believe to have been somehow related to DI before he went cuckoo, 3) there to watch Hurley.
But, per usual, I’m probably wrong on all counts
+1 from me, i also believe Dave is a real person. I have read theories about it Dave being Libby’s David. Someone has posted here that the producers said it is not Libby’s Dave.

At the very least, I like the idea that Dave is somebody that died when Hurley stepped onto the deck.
I’ve also been intrigued by the fact that Libby’s husband’s name was Dave. Maybe Dave was Libby’s husband’s ghost, who didn’t like Hurley hanging with the Mrs, and so decides to try and off Hurley. Remember the way Libby was staring intently Hurley’s way in the mental hospital? Did Libby see something?
