I haven’t posted for a while, mainly because I’m running out of idea’s, roll on season 4! Anyway, I’ve been watching season 3 over and over, and while watching ‘One of Us’ I had an idea about how Ben developed cancer.

When Juliet tells Ben she wants to leave the island, he informs her that her sisters cancer has come back, I think this was true. He showed her some charts (which may or may not have been her sisters) and promised that if she remained on the island and continued to help with the pregnancy problem then Jacob would cure her sisters cancer.

A short while (I think couple of years was supposed to have passed), Juliet discovers that Ben himself has developed cancer. Ben didn’t look at all suprised to me, and a short while later after the plane crash, Ben takes Juliet to the Flame Station and shows her that her sister is alive and successfully gave birth to her son.

My theory about why Jacob hasn’t cured Ben’s cancer is because he can’t. I think that Jacob’s power may work in a similar way to that of the character of John Coffey in Green Mile (Stephen King, tie-in) and that Ben asked him to ‘cure’ Juliette’s sister by transfering her cancer on to him. This is why Jacob cannot cure Ben as he would need somebody else to volunteer to take on Ben’s cancer, and if no-one but Ben can see Jacob then nobody would be able to.

Richard indicated to Locke in ‘The Brig’ that solving the islands fertility problems was just Ben’s obsession, and not a real priority among their people. I think may be possible that Ben could have been so obsessed that he would have been prepared to gamble his life on it.

I don’t know if anyone has proposed this before but that’s the way I’m thinking now.

I think that is highly probable CPB.

very possible but the real question is why does Ben want to cure the fertility problems? +1

I’ve done a theory on that if want to read it, but it is a little out of the box. Another theory which someone (I think Karmavore) posted was that it is a psychic manifestation of Ben’s grief over his mothers death, as she died while giving birth to him.

+1 CPB very possible indeed, good thinking! And I agree we’re all running out of ideas at this point!!

Thanks Annie, I was really getting stuck but since I got most of Season 3 copied for me I’ve been able to watch the episodes over again, hopefully watching them again will give me new inspiration.

Annie, speak for yourself. :) I’ve got all sorts of nascent ideas floating all up in here!

Yeah, and Season 3 in HD is eating up all my Tivo space. Anyone else have this problem? I can barely watch any new shows until they enable the TiVoToGo and I can get those files off to my computer! :)

Oh, and about this theory… When we take a look at those screencaps of the cancer charts that Ben shows to Juliet, we actually see that they are for a man. Thus far, I think we’ve been (no pun intended, blech) assuming that was simply a prop problem. But another take was that Juliet’s sister never had cancer, and that Ben showed her his own chart.

    +1 from me.

I am doing well today, cheers people!

Interesting thoughts, CPB! I was thinking that Ben manifested his own cancer, via “The Box Effect”, in order to bring Jack and flight #815 to “the island”, for reasons only known to him.

As, for Juliette’s sister and her cancer, I believe she did have cancer. Whether she has been cured, or it was another of Ben’s manipulations, has yet to unfold.

    Great thoughts and discussion! +1

Good points dab, the box idea is another thing puzzling me, personally I’m inclined to think that the ‘box’ may be just a manipulation that Ben used on Locke. I don’t believe that Lockes Dad ‘came out of the box’, I think he was brought there by Others ‘on assignment’ in the real world.

    Yes, true enough CPB.

I do believe that “the island” does have some very unique and special properties, which border on the parapshycology aspects of “Lost”. I think this is one aspect of that, combined with help from the outside world, to bring Cooper to “the island”. You’re definitely on the right track with your thinking!

    Nice job!

karmavore, of course I was speaking for myself. :-)

And, yes, I’m having the same problem with space. Although mine is a DVR from my cable company. I’ve got two separate DVR/VCR combos to connect to two of my TVs so I can tape the new shows without deleting what I need.

    Are we obsessed much???

Well Kat I think that Ben thought that the main thing was to keep Juliette on the island and worry about his health later, maybe he planned to let Ethan take a stab at fixing him, as he was their surgeon, for a dying man he did seem to take a long time about bringing Jack in.

this is a really mean theory towards people with cancer im flagging it as offensive

CPB I really like the idea of tranference. Ie Juliette’s sister’s cancer being transfered to Ben. Its reasonable to suppose that, nature being what it is, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. +1 from me.

+1, I think Juliet is the only person that really doesn’t belong on that island. She was purposely put their because of her science, it seems as though every body else is there for another reason (mainly by accident). But Juliet was “put” on the island, is that why Jacob is upset with Ben? Jacob hate science = Ben has cancer

    Heh… interesting…

good theory CPB. Question for you. Will Locke offer to take Ben’s cancer? Tom would have, I think.

Aren’t you all jumping the gun? I have heard nothing about Ben having cancer. Ben had a TUMOR. Tumors are not necessarily cancerous.

When Juliet told Ben he had a tumor, he jumped to the conclusion of cancer, but Juliet corrected him. After Jack removed the tumor he turned to Juliet and told her she should biopsy it to see if it’s malignant (cancerous). I have heard nothing that states definitively that the biopsy came back positive for cancer.

That’s right, WillsDad… I’ve pointed this out on a number of occasions myself. I don’t know if it’s an important point or not, but who knows?
