LOST-Theories.com

Well this is really less of a theory and more of an observation and some musings about said observation.

Last night I was engaged in a bit of morbid thinking about flying and I was wondering how I would cope if I got marooned Lost style and was wondering who would look after my boy if it did happen. I realised that with the exception of Claire, Mike and Sawyer, none of the Losties has any children.

Claire is ‘special’ because she was pregnant when she flew (although that in itself is a bit strange because most airlines would not accept such a heavily pregnant passenger after 28 weeks, let alone at around 35/36 weeks as Claire must have been, and especially not on a long haul flight…) and therefore had her child with her.

Sawyer has never met his child and so one can’t really say he has her to ‘go back to’ as such. Mike also has Walt with him.

Not one of the other Losties has children waiting for them at home. Not even any of the older Losties such as Rose and Bernard. I am interested as to why this might be. I mean you would think that one at least of the survivors would be worrying about getting back to their families but I don’t think a single person has mentioned this aspect.

Soooooo I was wondering if there is a bigger connection to babies, children and families that we haven’t seen yet. We know that the Others abducted some children to ‘keep them safe’ and ‘give them a better life’ but I don’t think their parents were on the flight with them. So that’s kind of interesting. Maybe those who were taken by the Others were more worthy because of their family ties? Or are the Others actually returning these people to their pre-crash lives…

I realise that this is very much a shot in the dark but I thought it might inspire some interesting debate. Thank you for reading!

You make a very valid point, Mrs! Good observation, about the children. I had thought perhaps, the surviving children’s parents had been killed in the crash. However, that has never been clarified. You definitely could be onto something with those thoughts. Hmmm, it is very strange that none of our losties have ever made any mention about them, either! Yep, something is most odd about that. +1

Ooh and for once I get a silent +1 as well!

  3. shamballa Oct 11, 2007 1:26 p.m. Comment: 3

That is an interesting observation mrs.

We know that the main Losties have love interests and family that are off island and alive (Penny, Chaalie’s bro, etc…) but not children that we (or they) are aware of with the exception of Sawyer but that could have been a con.

Your musings immediately made me think of something Ethan said to Claire in “Maternity Leave”… “We are good people, Claire. Good family.”

  4. mrssawyer Oct 11, 2007 1:29 p.m. Comment: 4

Yeah that’s it Shambunny. That line stands out for me too.

@ Dab I definitely don’t think the children’s parents have been discussed. When Ana was giving cpr to the little girl the boy doesn’t mention it, at least I don’t think so….

  7. mrssawyer Oct 11, 2007 1:53 p.m. Comment: 7

YAE I hadn’t even thought of it that way! Maybe its as simple as that. Because they have difficult parental relationships they don’t have kids of their own…

I can almost picture Prof smoking a pipe while he muses and mulls over this theory. :)

  9. mrssawyer Oct 11, 2007 1:56 p.m. Comment: 9

Yes Prof. There were children flying without parents but not parents flying without children! As a parent I think its quite odd to imagine two young children flying from Sydney to LA on their own but I can imagine a parent flying without their child.

As far as I can remember, nothing has been said about the children who were taken. We don’t know if their parents died in the crash. It seems odd there were that many of them flying alone.

And as for our Losties, you’re right no children waiting at home for them. As though they were handpicked….

Please excuse the interruption of “L-T Ladies Gone Wild”. I think all of you got an early jump on Casual Friday - but hey, whatever floats your raft….

Mrs. I like your observation quite a bit. I had been thinking about something similar, but from a slightly different angle. I’m having a hard time finding the references to the episode, but I seem to remember that Kate thought she was pregnant at one point. I think it was when she married that guy and then drugged him in order to leave. (Anyone know which episode that was?)

Anyway my observation was that in addition to the Daddy issues that have been emphasized on the show, so too have pregnancy woes; Kate had a false reading of being pregnant, Ana Lucia lost a baby when she was shot, Sun was told that she couldn’t conceive and Claire became pregnant even though she used some sort of birth control. In light of Mrs. observation about the lack of children among the survivors what exactly does all of this mean?

    +1 Mrs.

As, one of those LADIES, I don’t answer to you or any other man, for my behaviour! The power, I answer to, is far greater than you! So, you know what you can do with that nice little opinion of yours, now don’t you!!
