I think it is quite possible that the tension between Dharma and the “Hostiles” began when Dharma started using the indigenous population of the island as their guinea pigs or rabbits for their experiments.
The powers that be at Dharma used the word “hostiles” so that those doing the experiments would have less empathy when it came to using them as subjects for study. Perhaps Ben saw all this occurring and under Richard’s prompting and tutelage was pushed to the point that he would commit in effect genocide.
Dharma’s premise for being there and their experiments is supposedly for the “good” of humanity, but isn’t that what Hitler said about Eugenics? Look at the Dharma logo, uniforms, films, brainwashing, Namaste (catch phrase), and militaristic training and background.
I think Dharma is more sinister than we know…

I clicked on this link expecting to see a link to “Hostile Bunnies” of a more exotic nature. “Ladies of the Casimir Effect” or something of that nature. Imagine my disappointment. I should neg you for this! :)
Maybe the Others are using people who crash on the island for the same purpose because they realized Dharma might have been on to something?

temple1234, I was thinking that Ben was using brainwashing on Carl when I wrote this and wondered if that fit into my supposition.
I think Ben is proving himself not to be a capable leader of the Others and Richard has turned to John.
John despite his foibles is not a murderer. You count Naomi but it could be argued that that was a justified killing in an ensuing war.
Your question hearkens back to a supposition jaz made in her Group 1 theory post and that is that abuse tends to repeat itself in a vicious cycle.

Once again, I am reminded of the many Cults that surfaced during the “Dharma era”, so your theory is entirely plausible. Many of us have commented about the origins of Dharma, and have wondered if they were initially, military. If, one were to combine these elements, this is who “The Others” remind me of!
Sham: Great theory +1, this is a new twist on DI and I agree with Dab. That’s just what I was thinking as I read your theory. DI could have started out or turned into a cult, before the purge.

The swastika was originally a symbol of ballance, stability and peace until it was tainted and it’s meaning was turned into a symbol of hate. The same could be said of the Dharma logo… cool theory. +1

Yes, I have noticed the trend for quite sometime now dabs. Honestly, it doesn’t bother me. My comment was said tongue-in-cheek.
The system of voting and flagging can and has been abused, but it works for the most part because the majority of the people here are sincere.

Sham the missus missed this. The DI are definitely playing with fire and I totally buy the idea they were experimenting on the hostiles but I’d like to take it a step further. I think the DI staff themselves (the ones on the island at least) are also unknowingly part of the testing. Its like that Standford Prison Experiment. Put people in that position and the roles will take over the person!

Aye mrs. The rabbit hole goes deep. I made the supposition in another thread that everything happening on the island was a social experiment of sorts. The island is a microcosm of the real world but multiplied in intensity.
