The Universe has a way of course correcting” remember. The Charlie who encountered Desmond, was put on a new timeline that lead to his death.”

— JacoblovesyoU

Charlie had to die because Desmond killed him. Stay with me. When Desmond briefly went back to a life with Penny in Flashes Before Your Eyes, he encountered Charlie singing Wonderwall by Oasis on the street corner. He spoke to Charlie for about 30 seconds, and the conversation ended with rainfall. What Desmond ultimately did, was push Charlie off course.

The Butterfly Effect: The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that ultimately cause a tornado to appear (or prevent a tornado from appearing). The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale phenomena. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different.

Obvioulsy, I am saying that a tiny ripple such as Desmond’s conversation with Charlie, placed him in an alternate timeline ( see http://lost-theories.com/theories/2007/sep/30/nexus-timelines/ ). Later, in Greatest Hits, we see Charlie’s (Desmondless) flashback where he stops singing because of the rainfall. Charlie never saved Nadia from the mugger, and was never called a Hero and may have never got on board Oceanic Flight 815, or at least not been in the bathroom when the anomoly brought the plane down. He was supposed to be in the tailsection remember. Only Bernard can boast surviving the tail section.

Desmond is told, “The Universe has a way of course correcting” remember. The Charlie who encountered Desmond, was put on a new timeline that lead to his death. Desmond said “No matter what I do, you’re gonna die Charlie.” He had to die to balance things. See the movie Final Destination or the Butterfly Effect. Charlie is the perfect candidate because he has no flashback involving any other Lostie (yet), especially falling after his Desmond encounter, but before the flight.

Dharma wants to save the world, so I think they tried to invent a rewind button. Also, in Flashes Before Your Eyes, Des’ friend Donovan says to a young woman that her theisis was neat (I think I couldn’t hear it very well) The Wild Card is unpredictability run the same test ten times you, get ten different out comes that’s what makes life so wonderfully chaotic…then Des runs in.

To summarize, when Desmond turned the failsafe key, he was shot back to England and became a wildcard because he did not belong there. He changed the course of the universe (maybe even saved Jack’s dad), but more specifically killed Charlie. I apologize to those who don’t like time-travel but I think it MUST be part of the answer. I also don’t understand why people are hooked on a show featuring a black smokey monster and complaining that time-travel is too much.

I like where this is headed, and maybe Des’s trip back could have more to it than we’ve seen. What if Des was sent/went/thrown/appeared in his past to push Charlie onto that path to save himself from his own death?

bro now that is a great theorie

Jacob: Although, I am not a fan of Time Travel theories, if I were, this is one of the most logical time travel theories, I have ever read! Bravo, well done!

    Nicely written and presented! +1

Like locke said :”Did you see that column of smoke try to pull me underground, kate? Maybe we’re all insane. I wonder what jack saw.”

    Or something like that.

Time travel ideas DO suck in theory. But there is a big Smoke monster. And desmond is able to predict these things. So basically, anything is free game when logically brought up, which is what you have done. +1

Your idea’s are very refreshing. I’m not opposed to time travel theories, as long as it’s presented in a way that makes sense….I like this. +1

Jacob, +1 for a very interesting point of view on time travel. Although, I’m not opposed to time travel myself, this may very well win some others over!

    Nice job. :-)

Yes, this makes perfect sense, but there is something I don’t understand, and I wonder if you could enlighten me.

We all say “he turned the failsafe key and he travelled back in time”. If this show wants to add some time travel features, it should at least explain a little bit how this is possible!! How is it possible to turn a key and travel in time? Is it because of an excess in magnetic field that opened a wormhole? And he went through it? If that is the case, how is it possible that OTHER losties travelled in time, since this incident happened only once. Or was Desmond the only one that travelled in time?

+1 from me, mate. Although I wouldn’t call that “time-travel”, but it doesn’t affect the outcome of your post. Butterfly effect may well be in action.

I like the post, but didn’t the producers say there was no time travel? Well, if there is time travel of some sort then I’d definately be satisfied with this theory.

  11. Annie79 Oct 4, 2007 9:47 a.m. Comment: 11

xiv: The producers have confirmed Des is the only one who has traveled back in time.

  12. JacoblovesyoU Oct 4, 2007 1:49 p.m. Comment: 12

Des IS the only one you say? That would make him a wildcard I reckon. Thanks for your comments all. I wrote this theory because I, like some of the Others, have been reading Stephen Hawking lately.

XIV: I don’t know how turning a failsafe key would launch a wormhole or what not. I don’t know why Desmond lost his clothes. What I do know, is that it makes sence for the one person to see premonitions of Charlie’s death, is the only guy to have been on that timeline.

Yeah this makes sense to me, especially the idea of Des as the wildcard. I think that’s going to be central whether there is literal time travel or not.

I’m glad you guys like it. Following the hatch implosion, I would like to know what happened to his clothes, and why Locke woke up very similarly to Jack in the pilot episode. Time will tell (pun intended).

annie when did the producers confirm des traveled in time? someone please enlighten me.

This is certainly a theory that has some resonance to it. I think the strongest evidence for it lies in the fact that Desmond is completely and unfailingly convinced that Charlies course correction will happen…which of course it ultimately does in Through the Looking Glass.

Why is this evidence so strong? Because the “butterfly effect” is one that Desmond himself caused, and he knows this better than anyone. Time travel seems the obvious way to make such a ripple. So while nothing is definite, this theory really does line up some things nicely. Very interesting.

Just read this fantastic theory, and i definately think you’re on the right track. I just wrote a theory yesterday concerning the purge, and possible duplicates from other timelines being on the island, and i wrote another concerning desmonds clothes called “The Construct”. Mmm maybe i’ll write another blending the two together… Flashes was my favourite episode so far, no other episode in my humble opinion, has set tongues wagging as much. Big +1 from me.
