Mr Paik placed a tracking device/ GPS system in the second watch
— smokey81
I think the ship coming to the island is the ‘Helgus Antonius’ (lost experience) - originally a medical ship built for the Hanso foundation by Paik Heavy Industries but now being used by Mr. Paik himself to find the island. (Mr. Paik is Sun’s father as I’m sure 99% of you know)
Paik Heavy Industries and the Widmore Corporation were originally contracted to the Hanso Foundation to supply -
Paik - mainly vehicles - Boats, Submarine, Jeeps, Dharma van :)
Widmore - Construction and Medical Supplies (possibly built island Stations, pregnancy test on island were widmore)
BUT.. Paik and Widmore, whilst working for Hanso/Dharma have discovered the purpose of Hanso/Dharma (changing the ”core environmental and human factors” in the Valenzetti equation). So Paik and Widmore (either together or directly in competition) decided and plotted to cease control of the island and control the Valenzetti equation (4,8,15,16,23,42 ) for their own profit. If they can control the numbers and the fate of humanity then they can hold the world to ransom.
Paik/Widmore have unsuccessfully attempted to find the island before through various schemes - by sending people to where they think it could be approximately and tracking them. However the people they send on the missions to find the island for them are never aware they are part of a Paik/Widmore plan. (Much like Benipulation…Widipulation??) Examples of Paiks/Widmores attempts to locate the island can be found with Henry Gale’s balloon (manufactured by Widmore Corporation) and Desmonds boat race (Widmore sponsored)
This leads me too Oceanic Flight 815 and the part Jin unknowingly plays in Paik/Widmore’s latest attempt to locate the island. I think Paik (and other people) somehow knew the plane would crash and made sure Jin was on it and he could track Jin. Jin is not the only person however to seem to be purposely guided/set-up to be on Oceanic flight 815 (Claire and the fake psychic Malkin who gives Claire tickets for flight 815 , Claire is put off by the fact that the flight is only a day away. Malkin firmly adds that it can not be any other flight) anyway, back to Jin
Jin and the 2 watches….
Jin is ordered by Mr. Paik to deliver one watch to a business associate in Sydney, Australia and one to another associate in Los Angeles. This effectively puts Jin on Flight 815 as Jin delivers the first watch in Sydney but as we know the Flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles crashes on the island.
He is also followed to Sydney aiprport by an associate of Mr. Paik who, whilst Jin is in the bathroom cleaning coffee from his shirt, reminds him that he must get on that flight no matter what, and should he not then he will never see Sun again (S1 final episode)
Mr. Paik needed to get somebody on that flight to find the island. So..Mr Paik placed a tracking device/ GPS system in the second watch. Now the watch is on the island with Jin as Paik planned and in theory Paik can locate the watch by GPS and find the island. Paik’s only clue of where the island may be is the last location given by the watch before the plane crashed. Mr. Paik then followed these co-ordinates in his freighter. However the reason Paik has not found the watch or the island is because Ben turned on the jamming signal in the looking glass… on island events between Jin and Michael however resulted in Jin ultimately giving Michael the watch after the raft is launched.
At the end of season 2 Walt are Michael are given a boat and a bearing of 325 to an apparent escape and my theory here is that the boat takes them outside the coverage of the jamming signal of the looking glass and Walt and Michael are detected by, and picked up by Paik and his freighter where they are most likely then questioned about the watch and the location of the island. After Michael explains what he knows and the bearing they came from, Paik sends Naomi on that bearing towards the island.
Regrding the Hoffs/Drawlar coffin, i think Micheal could be in there…nobdy goes to the funeral because Micheal is the one who’s led the freighter to the island and is partly blamed for whatever happens when the freighties get there,… Jack is so upset because he now realises that without micheal in the world his chances of getting back to the island are even slimmer.
One obvious question regarding this theory is why would Paik knowingly allow his daughter to board a plane he knew would crash, well if you can remember back it was Jin who suggested she join him traveling to Sydney and Los Angeles on a vacation and that she also never planned to get on the plane she had arranged to leave Jin forever at Sydney airport, disappearing to start a new life. However, while they wait in the check-in line at the airport, reminded Sun of her love for her husband. She decided at the final moment not to escape and to board the plane. Ultimately, it was a last minute decision that put her on the plane which could not have been known by Paik until it was too late.
The other question that this theory would throw up is regarding people knowing the plane would crash or indeed planned it to crash… the show leans to the reason that the plane crashed due to desmond not entering the numbers in time… however this has a number of flaws and instead of copying and pasting I would like to refer you to the theory Desmond the Scapegoat? (Group 1ish) by nsnstvprk and Planned Plane Crash by Hope. The first explains how desmond enters the numbers after the counter runs down and the clock will not reset where as it is entered by the losties after counter runs down and the system does reset…this suggests there is remote control of the Swan computer either from another dharma station or an off-island location. Further evidence to support the remote control of the computer is seen in S2E9 when Michael speaks with Walt(supposidly) on the Swan hatch computer. This also shows that the hatch is monitored as we learn later when the Pearl station is discovered.
Also..if the plane crash was not planned or expected then why has it been covered up!! with all the passengers declared dead and swimming with the fishes in a 4 mile deep ocean trench off Bali !!!

+1 For the idea of triangulating a signal via the gold watches to identify the location of the Island (and thereby running into Michael)
Of course, thinking this through leads to an inherent problem around anyone predicting the crash of Oceanic 815. The plane crashes via an extremely unlikely set of conditions, chief of which is Desmond failing to push the button in time. However, many people on here have creatively (I deliberately use that word!) come up with ways to explain this, so let’s not get too bogged down in it!
just a question though, I believe the watch you’re referring to is the Rolex Watch where Michael got hammered unknowingly by Jin for “stealing” it. IF that’s the watch you’re talking abt, then I honestly don’t remember seeing it again in season 2. The last time that watch was seen was in Season 1 (Exodus) where Jin gives Michael the watch while they’re on the raft.
And we know that they got attacked by Tom so the watch must have gotten lost in the middle of the sea or something, which means the location of not really point to the island.
If the watch was lost during the attack on the raft it might also explain why the freighter was anchored a few miles offshore ( though I remember it was mentioned that they were 50 miles off the coast, and I don’t think michael’s raft went that far).
Smokey, These issues have been raised before and discussed. I would tend to agree that the freighter likely belongs to Widmore/Paisk/Hanso. I do like the idea that the watches have a GPS tracking device.
Sun was supposedly leaving Jin at the airport, and then decided at the last minute, to board #815 with him.
I like it. And I believe the plane crash was indeed planned…..somehow.
Smokey I like this. Its a nice combination of ideas involving the presence of the freighter, and Michael and Walt’s ‘escape’. Makes good sense to me.

Good post Smokey. You actually have answers that make a lot of sense regarding a planned crash, a possible remote outside the Swan ,controlling the computer and the possible tracking device.+1
Smokey, I’m with dab on this one.
The only questions I still have are these: Did Sun’s father know she was planning to leave Jin at the Sydney airport?
How could Paik, Widmore etc. know the plane would crash on the island?
Annie, The only thought I have regarding #815, was that perhaps it wasn’t intended to crash, but divert to “the island” anyway, (you recall that the plane was already way off course), and didn’t take Desmond’s actions (failing to push the button on time), into account.
Good theory. Great post. I don’t comment much, so accept this as a compliment. Even if the GPS wasn’t for finding the island, and rather just a paranoid Paik wanting to track his son-in-law, it is still good stuff. It would still explain the freighter. Furthermore, to piggyback, maybe some of the information Naomi had came from interrogating Michael on the freighter. We all know he cracks under pressure or if Walt is threatened. +1
Thanks, dab. That could explain it. That part has always bugged me.
Excellent. A very interesting read, nice linking of the multiple themes. Maybe the pilot messed up and entered the time bubble, at a point when the runway wan’t finished? I remember him immediately asking how many survivors there were. Maybe his job was to get the passengers there. Desmond may have been responsible for ripping the plane apart, but surely the pilot was responsible for where it was!
just wondering, if the plane was meant to divert to the island then how was it going to land - the Others are building a runway so that seems to suggest they don’t have one already
First of all, +1 for an extremely entertaining and well thought out theory smokey81.
But I agree with Annie79 on this…how did anyone know that Oceanic 815 was going to crash on the island?
Also, there are a couple of catch 22’s here because if they (powers to be) knew it was going to crash on the island, they would have to know WHERE the island was in the first place, right? They would have to know what plane is on a flight path scheduled to cross the island, or have a way of diverting a flight to the island (which is what the pilot said happened).
So everything you say makes sense smokey81, except the motivation for the people who caused the crash can’t be to find the island, they already know where it is. Their motivation has to be something else…maybe to get specific people to the island?
So you might have the “what’s” right, it just doesn’t seem like you have the “why’s” right.
But again, great contribution!
This theory is the same as your last theory about the watches and frieghter. but instead you have just coppied everyones posts and added them to your new theory. How about giving credit where credits due.
pacey, have you missed the part where i reference 2 other theorys —Desmond the Scapegoat? (Group 1ish) by nsnstvprk and Planned Plane Crash by Hope. And this theory is a revised theory from my last one taking into account some of the questions and points made in the comments section.
thanks again to everyone who has commented and raised points i had not considered, i still cant’ figure it all out but i suppose thats the lost way and having theorys to what the hells going on is one of the aspects that makes it so great.. that and kates freckles.. roll on season 4 the wait is killing me now
apologies pacey, it was in fact your comment that first suggested that micheal could be picked up by the freighter..so credit is definatly yours for that.
