OK… I’m hesitating to post this…

The reason being… what the below link will take you to is a draft copy of this song. The problem with sharing draft copies of songs is:

A) Folks will listen to it and not be able to overlook the flaws and judge the work BASED on the flaws…

OR

B) Folks will listen to it and not hear any flaws then be disappointed later by changes intended to fix the song.

But… dab requested this song long ago and I feel duty-bound to give HER a listen at least. And the truth is I’m interested in any feedback that y’all might have, positive or negative.

A note on the lyrics….

While most LOST fans will immediately catch onto the “Jack” imagery in the song, my intention was to use these images as metaphor and thereby make the song accessible to folks who aren’t fans of LOST. This was actually quite easy to do, because in the end this song isn’t about Jack at all. Rather, it’s about me.

To be perfectly honest, folks, for most of my life I’ve had a difficult time finding other people who share my interests in philosophy, myth, and storytelling. And this has meant that, for me, deep friendships haven’t been especially easy to come by. As I’ve traveled the US and some other parts of the globe I’ve met people with whom I could connect in a profound way, and this has often given me the sense that my people… my “tribe”, if you will… has somehow been scattered out over the entire world. As you can imagine, my “travels” in cyberspace have only enhanced this notion.

Of all the stories I’ve had the pleasure of hearing, though, LOST seems to do a better job than any other in bringing together the people I can relate to most. And that’s made my participation in this particular forum especially rewarding.

So this song (such that it is) goes out to all of you… my friends here on L-T.com… especially those of you who know that it isn’t a TV show that brought us here. Or even a good story. But, rather, the wanderer in each of us to whom the story called out.

I’d also like to dedicate the song to my Mom, who died Aug. 5, 2006. Because for all of my life, so long as I knew where Mom was, I never felt lost.

So… here’s where you can find the song:

http://www.pilothouseband.com/audio/lost.mp3

And here are the lyrics, if you’d like to follow along:

The last thing I remember… Is gazing out across the sky… We were sailing together… My fellow travelers and I.

But the moment was shattered… The vessel trembled and lurched… And we fell broken and scattered… Upon the dark cursed Earth.

When I awoke barely breathing… Upon the damp jungle floor… All alone cut and bleeding… I rose to search for the shore.

For there were monsters behind me… And enemies everywhere… And every fear deep inside me… Claimed my heart then and there.

And as I ran through the brushes… And as I stumbled and coughed… I fell in brambles and rushes… And I felt hopelessly lost.

Then there was you… Then there was you… Then every dream I ever had finally came true. I was lost on this island without a clue… Then there was you.

Thanks for listening, and thanks in advance for your feedback!

Proffie, I have a suggestion for you, but require your permission. The lovely and talented Ms. WTF, has some outstanding skills making video montages. Would you consider allowing her to put together a montage of “Lost” clips set to your song and post it on You-Tube????

I am certain she would do it justice!

    A little Synchronicity!

  6. ProfOzone Nov 26, 2007 1:34 p.m. Comment: 6

Heh… the lost tribe becomes the LOST Tribe and it’s no longer lost. Maybe that’s really what “LT” stands for. :-D

It’s a waltz, actually. First I’ve ever written as far as I can recall. Those of you who have listened to other Pilothouse songs know this isn’t our usual thing.

Then again, I don’t know if we even have a “usual thing”.

Durance: Hm… maybe I can sell the song to him and he can actually make it sound good! :-)

Vocally, I mean. I think the music is awesome, and full credit goes to my partner Chris Snook, who composed the music after I provided him with a chord progression based on the melody that I wrote.

Prof, what a beautiful song. I just can’t say enough, the lyrics, the music and your comments about not being lost as long as long as you had your mom, well they just spoke to me. My mom just turned 90 and isn’t feeling that well. She is my center, so I know exactly what you mean.

We’re all wanderers in one way or another, but being part of the Lost Tribe has enhanced my life. Your song sends that message home.

  31. Agent_XXX Nov 27, 2007 2:09 p.m. Comment: 31

Douku… I understand why you may confuse Prof for the Anunnaki. He has been called “Angel” before… and his qualities do appear “other-worldly”… he’s no less than a force of nature. To be truthful I’ve pegged him as Bile (Bee-Lay) … an Irish God often represented as a Tree that whose roots go to the depths of the universe and whose branches reach the highest heavens. His mommy simply called him “Billy” as mothers love that cutesy, diminutive talk. All in all, that helped him to blend with his surroundings and get through modern day schooling. Not that he needed schooling, mind you, but it helped him learn of modern traditional culture so that he wouldn’t stick out in crowds as “that immortal dude”.

  32. Agent_XXX Nov 27, 2007 2:10 p.m. Comment: 32

Most books associate the Welsh god Beli with the Irish god Bile (Squire, 1997: 120). The root “bel,” which is expressed in both names, literally means “to die” (ibid.). This root word can also be seen in the names of other deities such as Balor of the Fomorii whose glance was death to the beholder (ibid.). It is so funny people would draw this kind of conclusion about our sweet, lovable Proffie. Even his classmates in school called him “Dr. Death” for awhile. During the 19th century, Celticists John Rhys and M. H. d’Arbois de Jubainville both asserted that the Irish god Bile was a deity associated with death, darkness, and the underworld (ibid.) However, this opinion is not shared with contemporary scholars. I think the Prof007 mantle was taken on in a bit of rebellion in response to this. Truly the ladies have always thought he’s “to die for”… in reality though - not many know what to do or what to think when face to face with such absolute beauty and power. Jealously is an ugly foe - and insecurities can make your only friend a foe. Maybe as a spy he thought he could hide from this life… I think perhaps he was tiring of being the center of all the Druid rituals.

  33. Agent_XXX Nov 27, 2007 2:11 p.m. Comment: 33

In Irish, Bile is given the meaning of “scion,” “hero,” and “noble warrior” (MacKillop, 1998: 37). Though his weapons are his truth and light that shine out in every earnest thing he does. I’m not just pulling that out of the air…

The Celtic god of light and healing, “Bel” means “shining one,” or in Irish Gaelic, the name “bile” translates to “sacred tree.” Patron of sheep and cattle, Bel’s festival is Beltane, one of two main Celtic fire festivals. Beltane celebrates the return of life and fertility to the world — marking the beginning of Summer and the growing season. Taking place on April 30, Beltane also is sometimes referred to as “Cetsamhain” which means “opposite Samhain.” The word “Beltaine” literally means “bright” or “brilliant fire,” and refers to the bonfire lit by a presiding Druid in honor of Bile.

The silly vegan loves his cows so much he won’t even drink their milk out of honor and respect. Spring brings the obvious connotations of fertility and outright sex - which explains why he naturally attracts that kind of attention. DUH Funny how his life has been spent trying to be opposite of his true fertile nature. Cetsamhain. His favorite holiday is Halloween. His songs sing of shadows, struggle and turmoil that have marked this passage of his on earth. He even admires the shadowiest of all superheroes - the Batman.

  34. Agent_XXX Nov 27, 2007 2:11 p.m. Comment: 34

I call thee out Bile! Hide no longer! Caress us with warmth. It exudes like sex and passion from your blindingly, beautiful voice. Make peace with the bonfire, let us honor you. Noble warrior… the insanity that springs from gazing upon your brilliant fire is a purifying rite… and the untruth that falls away is not your shortcoming but our sin falling away. Strong like the mighty oak you help us grow! Your branches reach understanding, knowledge and mystery that we cannot comprehend. We can either fear you or take shelter in your strength. You are an oasis for LOST travelers. Proffie, Bile… we worship thee!

Agent hangs a glorious tire swing from your branches and swings with glee!

  39. jazprof Nov 27, 2007 9:33 p.m. Comment: 39

Bel’s Norse counterpart is Baldr—vulnerable only to mistletoe. A dangerous season is upon thee Bel. To die…to sleep no more…but in that sleep of death, what dreams may come?—the underworld…the unconscious…that which lies beneath the world tree. The Renaissance meaning of dying may be operative here. We sleep no more, but do we tire? And if we swing, must we tire? Or can we, in an eternal return, swing tirelessly?

Well, Chris just labeled the song “lost” but I don’t suppose that’s the title I’d go with in the final cut. So… no, it isn’t really titled. Then again, whenever I drag my feet in titling a song we usually just end up using whatever tentative label Chris came up with. Thus titles like, “The Coffee Shop Song”. :-)

Friday night I crashed your party Saturday I said I’m sorry Sunday came and trashed me out again I was only having fun Wasn’t hurting anyone And we all enjoyed the weekend for a change

I’ve been stranded in the combat zone I walked through Bedford Stuy alone Even rode my motorcycle in the rain And you told me not to drive But I made it home alive So you said that only proves that I’m insane

You may be right I may be crazy But it just might be a lunatic you’re looking for Turn out the light Don’t try to save me You may be wrong for all I know But you may be right

Remember how I found you there Alone in your electric chair I told you dirty jokes until you smiled You were lonely for a man I said take me as I am ‘Cause you might enjoy some madness for awhile

Now think of all the years you tried to Find someone to satisfy you I might be as crazy as you say If I’m crazy then it’s true That it’s all because of you And you wouldn’t want me any other way

You may be right I may be crazy But it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for It’s too late to fight It’s too late to change me You may be wrong for all I know But you may be right

You may be right I may be crazy But it just might be a lunatic you’re looking for Turn out the light Don’t try to save me You may be wrong for all I know But you may be right You may be wrong but you may be right You may be wrong but you may be right
