“What if what we percieved as the cold blooded slaughter of the Dharma Initiative was really the correcting of the incident?”
— JamCat76
The purge. Since we saw it, it has nibbled away at me. I firmly believe that Ben and the hostiles are “the good guys”, simply because everything they show us, seems to point to the contrary. Like all good mysteries, it is what they show us, and that which we take for granted, that is not true… What if all the Benipulation, IS for the greater good?
I read the afformentioned post with relish. It suggested using the Orchid video, that all our survivors may have been duplicated as they passed into the islands airspace/ Time bubble. Whether they were, or versions of them from the future/past appeared islandside, it posed an interesting question. What if the same were true of the purge? What if what we percieved as the cold blooded slaughter of the Dharma initiative was really the correcting of the incident? If the incident involved the Orchid, maybe everybody within the islands airspace experienced a splitting of time, so that there were two versions of everybody. Didn’t Ben tell Locke “They couldn’t even coexist with the islands original inhabitants”.
The rabbits had to be kept apart, maybe the inhabitants of the island were at risk of bumping into themselves. As the Dharma initiative extended their territory, building new hatches, maybe the other versions of them became more and more wary that something terrible could happen, and executed them for “good” reason. It strikes me that the Dharma Initiative were mostly a peaceful bunch, and with episodes named “Through the looking glass” and “One of us” it conjurs the idea of clear groupings and mirror images.
Maybe juliettes journey to the island had to be under sedation because the other version of her was sent back to the mainland to live happily with her sister, or they needed to buy time to eliminate her counterpart. Could this be the reason that Ben told Alex that he couldn’t let them leave. Because their bodies really do sit at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe this was also the reason for the hatch quarantine.and the food drops.
Desmond too, was unconcious when he reached the island, was he too “copied”. I wonder if the same were true of Rousseau’s team. Are the copies vunerable 2 illness. Maybe Danielle killed “copies” of her team, maybe she could sense that they were different in some respect.
Maybe Smokie is designed to tell the difference, between real and copy, a security system, to ensure that doubles don’t meet, this could be why he behaves in a variety of ways to different people. What if when the Dharma initiative realised what had occured during “the incident” they set ole Smokie loose to rectify the problem, the hostile versions then had no choice but to seek solace inside the sonic fence.
Another thing that struck me is when Ben found out he had the tumor, did he realise that he wasn’t an original, that he was susceptible to illness. Maybe the commitment that Locke had to show, was to prove he was a copy/original. “I’m sorry. He’s not who we thought he was!”
I know that Damon has previously stated that clones are off the table, but what if other types of copy are feasable? Just a thought. I know that Jack and Kate eventually get off the island, but maybe their bodies were never recovered. Didn’t Naomi state to Mikail that she was not alone, maybe she saw herself split. Maybe Mikail was there to eliminate that version of her. This could also explain why the mainland Dharma are reluctant to visit, as the problem would only escalate.
Could the reason that the island has remained so secret, be that a lot of the people who landed there were not missed, their counterparts, have continued their lives on the other side of the “Snowglobe”?
Tie all this in with the numbers predicting doom for the rest of the planet, and that the button threw time on the island back 108 minutes everytime it was pushed and we can assume that the island is mankinds last hope for survival. Maybe this justifies all the Benipulation, and solidifies the fact that pushing the button is in fact saving the world. If the island is truly the last refuge of mankind, of course it is important that pregnanct women be saved, otherwise how could life continue in this special place. The copies may not be able to bear children. Mmmmmmm, i think i have a neat little theory building.
I’m aware i’ve recycled little bits from other theories, and would like to thank all those great theorists, for their brainfarts. Hopefully we’re edging closer to the truth. I’ve neglected using the numbers in my text, as i realize it offends the more stuffy and sensitive reader. As usual, add to it , tear it to peices, just know i appreiciate the opportunity to brainstorm with like minded souls, and Quarantine remember, it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. I respect your opinion, and liked your theory. Namaste!

Very interesting new ideas. I’m getting 2 intersecting planes of existence out of this. Could the whispers factor into this as well?
JamCat: I want to Thank you for your ” The Constuct” theory. That is what inspired me to coin the word “42itous“.
One of the things that I like most about this site is that in reading what other users have to contribute, it keeps the mind open to fresh new ideas! Keep up the good work.
I have a theory that I have been trying to put together concerning many of the bible references there are. Unfortunately I am not a writer so, I am having some difficulty putting it altogether. :( +1
I like it. But, as you state, if Lindelhof says clones are not the case then we have to respect that. Which makes it hard to embrace this idea, despite it being good. Caught between a rock and a hard place.
Angelocomet: Perhaps you are reading Lindelholf’s comments too literally. Or, more precisely, not literally enough. A clone is a very specific thing, an exact genetic copy of a particular organism, grown from some kind of tissue sample from that organism. What jamcat is speaking of isn’t cloning- it is something more … metaphysical. I am an attorney, and I tend to listen to exactly what people say and try not to make assumptions. When Big L says “no clones” he probably means exactly that.
Jamcat: I’ve seen theories along this line, and I tend to like them as they can explain much very elegantly.

I’ve also seen ideas along your lines that, for instance, Cindy on Hydra Island is not the Cindy from the plane. That would explain why the children accompanying her inquire of Ana Lucia, but Cindy does not.
Plus one.
Q: I left you a comment on the Cindy drugged Jack theory
Jamcat, You have put forth a very plausible theory, and agree with Quarantine’s take on the subject. I also agree with all the other comments as well. I like your ideas, and applaud you on your originality, and fresh approach! +1
What dab said and a big +1
Thanx everyone for your comments and support for my “out there” theories, i like your Cindy idea, Quarantine. I think that was one of the most suspicious moments of season 3. It was almost like there was something Jack was supposed to know but didn’t. The replicant theory goes some way 2 explaining her strange behaviour.
JamCat, you know I always enjoy reading your theories, as I did this one. I have to agree with Kat on this one, although I did give you a big +1.
What Q said about clones being an entirely different thing than what is being proposed is correct, exactly what I thought , but he put it much more eloquently. In the same respect, this is not about time travel either, as shifts in space/time are not the same thing. The producers comments are deliberately ambiguous. Their statement that the word “clone” will not be mentioned does not equate to lack of multiple existances, and their statement that there is no time travel does not rule out shifts in time and space.
And don’t think that the producers haven’t themselves consulted lawyers to know exactly how far they can go to mislead without lying. I shouldn’t have tackled this one this early. This is going to be a lazy day I think.
Quarantine: I understand your point. However, what we are therefore dealing with are subtle definitions. If Lindelhof states that clones are not the way of it, and it turns out that one of the major central mysteries is revealed to be to do with a concept not entirely unlike but not exactly identical to cloning then my respect will be slightly diminished.
Lindelhof and Cuse have put a lot of stock in themselves to fend off criticism that they don’t know what the end is and they are making it up as they go along. To make statements such as the above don’t aid their cause, in my opinion. Though maybe I am being too harsh. I mean, they obviously do know the big secrets, and probably some rabid fan in one of the multitude of questions and theories posed as hit on it. That’s got to be fairly annoying. So if they are trying to throw people off the scent by tenuous diversionary tactics then I can understand it.
Hmmm I really don’t like the idea of clones in the traditional sense of the word, a la The Island, vat grown clones and all that. However this is an interesting take on things. And Quarantine’s explanation of Cindy’s behaviour fits with this.
Not sure I 100% believe but you get a +1 for what I do believe.
