I was doing some research on old instruments the other day, and I came across one known as the Theremin. [Follow this link for an article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin ] A Theremin is essentially an instrument that is played without one directly touching it. Sound is produces whenever one’s hand enters a field created by antennae that are on the the instrument.
Upon further research, I found that it is common belief that a Theremin was used in the song “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys. [Although it was actually a Tamarin that was used, and not a Theremin, it is widely believed that it WAS a Theremin.] Aside from this song, there aren’t really any notable “hit” songs that used this instrument [the instrument mainly being used since the 1950’s for sci-fi type effects in movies.]
I’m going out on a limb here, but I think that this song may have been chosen as the code to disable the blocking signal because of the properties of the Theremin. I mean, the instrument slightly relates to the electro-magnetic/”mysterious” properties of the island. [Here’s a video of the Theremin in action: http://www.chadpaulson.com/2007/03/legend-of-zelda-theme-via-theremin_21.html ]
This is my first post…and this was just a thought. Comments are welcomed. Thank you.

not bad.
I believe that instrument was used for spooky and sci-fi music effects for many years.
There was a Russian spy that toured the US in the 50s or 60s whose cover was that he was a master of this weird instrument.
Anyway, plus one, and welcome.
Latent, Interesting theory. I used Wikipedia to look up Theramin, and found out that the Beach Boys used a device called an Electro-Theramin which mimics the Theramin in the song Good Vibrations. So, I think you are onto something! Good research! +1
Nice first post! Thanks for the flashback, I used to play zelda every day, a life time ago. +1
Latent, welcome and congrats on your first theory!
Good connection to the code and research to back it up. You could be onto something. +1
A band called Supergrass used a theremin for their cracking song 1997 song Richard III.
This is all I have to add!
Hey Latent! This is interesting! I don’t know much about the theremin, but you make some good points. Perhaps the song is more important than we think.
Recently I read something interesting about the song’s lyrics, which made me think of Walt’s dog, Vincent, as well as Jacob and his dog….or dog portrait. (Remember the dog portrait in Jacob’s shed/shack?)
Anyway, about the lyrics… When Brian Wilson was a child, his mother told him that dogs could pick up “vibrations” from people, so that the dog would bark at “bad vibrations”. So he turned this into the general idea of vibrations (and Mike Love putting “good” in front of vibrations), and developed the idea of people being able to do the same with emotions.
All of this reminded me of the book, The Secret, which is about the law of attraction.
{By the way, I do not believe in “The Secret”, at least not in the way the author does. I believe in GOD and that HE is in control… HE is more powerful than anyone’s “positive thoughts”. I give GOD credit for any and everything good in my life. I cannot take credit for that, no matter how positive my thoughts are.}
Now with that being said, I think there are a few connections between “The Secret”- the law of attraction and Lost. In “The Secret”, Rhonda Byrne talks about how our thoughts and vibrations determine whether we’re attracting into our lives what we want or what we don’t want. Every thought, every feeling, every person, every thing is Energy, which vibrates and radiates a signal. As these signals are transmitted, signals of the same frequency are magnetically attracted back to the sender. So perhaps the Losties’ dominant vibration, which is formed as a result of their thoughts and feelings, attracted an identical frequency from the Universe…? Who knows…
