I was thinking about this the other day, not sure if it has been thought of before. Anyway….
So Enzo Valenzetti was brought in by the UN in 1962 to investigate the the threat of the end of mankind. His findings were disregarded, and Alvar Hanso continued the research. So anyway, Hanso then helps fund DHARMA in 1970 to try and alter the end date of human existence.
Im sure we are all aware of the 12-21-2012 predictions going around. The Mayans, Nostradamus, the Hopi-Indian tribe, etc. All predicting the end date. What if the numbers are predicting the same date?
Since we are not sure exactly when in 1970 DHARMA was created, its impossible to know for sure.
So if you take the numbers and use them backward rather than forward you could come up with some equations.
42 years 2 months 3 days 16 hours 15 minutes 48 seconds
There could probably be alternate variations, since we dont have an exact start date. But if the date is from 1970, 42 years from then would be 2012.
This theory may be silly or far out there, so I dont mind critizism. :) Just bored and got to thinking about LOST.
Y, It isn’t too far fetched if the calculations you provided are accurate! That would make it quite interesting! Nice work! +1
Whilst I don’t buy into the Nostradamus, end-of-the-world dates in the real world (so many have been and gone, and so many people have quietly, red-faced sloped off having continued to see a world plainly not end after they said it would!) as DB says, it’s at least an idea with some backing behind it - although it does beg the question of why the numbers were presented backwards, and grouped differently?
I like it.
Mainly because the numbers thing will have to have some relevance to something that will need to be explained before the end. And it makes sense that it is something this simple and easy to portray so that everyone gets it, rather than them actually being complicated variables in an equation.

Y2, I find it very interesting too. Good work! +1
But, boy I hope you’re wrong. :-(
Y2 good stuff. I like the idea of the final date (for the purposes of the show ONLY, lol) being set already and the numbers being a countdown. I hope you aren’t right about the 21st Dec though coz that’s MrMrs’s birthday. Oh well I suppose it would be a party to end all parties!

I keep saying this: I believe the numbers have been explained about as well as they are ever going to be. We know that they are related to some kind of doomsday equation. The producers have stated that we may never know what the numbers mean. I believe that the writers came up with a random string of numbers with which to make us crazy. The numbers show up occasionally to frustrate us, tantalize us, or thrill us, but that’s about it.
We torture those numbers to give up their secrets; we turn them into star constellations, we turn them into longitude and latitude, we read them backwards, we assign dates and times to them … it goes on and on.
I think the REAL secret of the numbers is that … there is no secret.
The only real question is this: when we are making those numbers do handstands to make them make sense, do the writers laugh at us, or do they feel guilty?
(Oh, and BTW, I will never believe that that 2012 date means anything more than that the carver of that rock ran out of rock. Making a calendar so far out in time was more than adequate to get the corn planted during the carver’s lifetime. Just because our microsoft calendars don’t go beyond 2099 doesn’t mean that the world ends then; it just means that nobody is making meaningful plans that far into the future.)
Anyway…it was a fun theory and sort of creative. I give you a plus one.
Does the number 44 have some meaning? Desmond says he has been in the hatch 44 days. Sarah is wearing number 44 on her pj top. There were 44 survivors before Boone died.
Y2: Good thinking, but I’ve read elsewhere that TPTB have said that the numbers and the show have nothing to do with the Mayan calendar and the year 2012. Not that I hang on every word they say, but it’s still notable all the same.
+1 for the Hell of it.
katrinicity: You haven’t allowed for a flash forward to 2012. ;-)
Quarantine, oooooh wouldn’t that be quite the explosive finale!!!!
I like this one, it would be an excellent twist if the above information was delivered to one of the characters by a dead man from the future in a black rabbit suit.
Quarantine presents a good argument, but I think that the amount of emphasis placed on the numbers throughout the show does indicate they are important.
Katrina’s last sentence could point to how the series will actually end in 2010, with the possibilty of the world ending in 2012, or not, and all of us left to decide for ourselves which direction it went/will go. (The producers did say something about how the ending will leave everyone with the ability to see it as they choose, didn’t they?)
I don’t recall Donnie Darko being one of the passengers, but they did spring Nikki and Paulo on us, so who knows?
Shows how well I remember the movie, I have no idea what color the suit was, but I do remember the rabbit face very well.
Ah, I see where you’re coming from, and now that you’ve reminded me, I do remember you bringing up Donnie Darko before. Sometimes it takes me awhile, but I do manage to get there. (When I saw the rabbit suit from the future mentioned above, I immediately thought of donnie darko, but beyond that, there was little brain activity). Those are some darned good connections.
