There has been a lot of great theories about Locke on this site in the last few days. However i do think we are treating him to harshly. Heres my view knock me down!!!
John Locke has been manipulated, benipulated, Conned, Cheated, Left for dead twice, Has lost the woman he loved, And he has gone bald trust me i speak from personal experience that could be the worse of all!!! lol. We have seen that Locke was brought up without family around him. He has been conned out of his kidney by his own dad then callously rejected. However he found love with Helen and just when he had finaly let go of the demons of his past re enter Anthony Cooper. Yes Locke shouldn’t have had anything to do with him. But he is Lockes dad and you only get the one so yes Locke made a mistake and because of that he lost Helen. However Locke is nothing if not a survivor he found again some sort of contentment in the commune taking a young guy called Eddie under his wing. Once again though John was turned on betrayed and rejected. Of course reenter Cooper again. Locke tries to do what is right and ends up taking a 10 storey fall and been paralysed.
Then the island. Lockes plane has crashed and he finds two miracles one is that he has survived. Two is that he has the use of his legs. He doesn’t tell anyone because he has trust issues can you blame him? He immediately becomes the man he always could have been he is the voice of reason, The magnificent hunter, The help for Charlie, Claire, Boone, But still he is not trusted or respected. Boone dies but it is an accident you can’t blame Locke. it was a sacrifice demande by the island it was for the greater good. Finaly he finds new meaning the island shows him some of its secrets. What he saw was beautiful. He is led to the hatch where he finds what he thinks is a important job pushing the button. However he was conned again he loses faith and stops. Eco sets him back on the right path but because of this he is sacrifised to the island you cannot blame Locke it was a sacrifice the island demanded. Re enter Ben and Cooper. Locke is set another challenge which he passes with help from Sawyer now Locke can be the man he always wanted to be nothing is there to hold him back. Locke is conned by Ben He is cheated and Benipulated he sees Jacob and finds that he is truly special he now knows his destiny is to lead the island and protect the island to protect and help Jacob. He has a higher purpose he is special. Then of course he is shot by the jealous, fearfull Ben. Jacob comes to Locke in the form of Walt and saves him tells him his work is not over.
No Lockes work is not over. He knows now that the most important thing is to protect the island. He has moved beyond rejection and family issues he has gone past the manipulations and benipulations. He doesn,t give ben a second thought at the seasons finaly he knows he has passed Bens final test. Yes he is forced to kill but it is to protect the island. But in John’s heart he cannot kill Jack. He just can’t do what he really should and stop the call. He exits in to the jungle he has failed again.
But He will be back the island will forgive John. Together they will fight new arrivals and protect the island. Sacrifices will have to be made but John Locke does know he will be a great man, a hero, You must put your faith in this man he is the great survivor, a man of faith a brave hero, and above all the one man who can make everything right in the end. His name is John Locke he is our hero.
While this is a pretty accurate summary of the first 3 seasons, I find it hard to believe that every single event and action that Locke has been involved in should be taken at face value. There has to be a twist and a reveal at some point, the writer’s have forced us to doubt Locke since the Pilot episode.
locke for president! if there’s one person i put my absolute faith in to save us all, it’s john locke! +1
Jamtay finally a Locke theory I can get on board with. I solemnly believe John Locke is a good man. I think that’s why his back story is portrayed so tragically. To remind us of his trials.
To go back to Kat’s amazing ‘Desmond the Archetypal Hero’ post. It could be argued that Locke is somewhat further down the hero’s path…
Then the island. Lockes plane has crashed and he finds two miracles one is that he has survived. Two is that he has the use of his legs. He doesn’t tell anyone because he has trust issues can you blame him? He immediately becomes the man he always could have been
‘trust issues’ = spot on
‘becomes the man he always could have been’ = spot on
Big +1 from me!
Heya Jam, You presented the positive side of John Locke, which we all hope will turn out to be true. I used to feel that way about him, but last season, changed my mind. I guess next season may make this somewhat clearer.
You certainly presented a nice theory about him! +1
It was an accurate summary up to “Jacob comes to Locke in the form of Walt…” That is where sheer guesswork started.
We don’t know anything about the appearance of Walt. We don’t know what John knows. We don’t know what he has moved beyond. We don’t know it the island is sentient or if it “forgives.”
Sorry, you lost me. But, in the spirit of Missing Troll Day, I give you a plus one.
jamtay: I have always thought that Locke was the key to Lost.(pun intended) I think this a really good summation of John Locke.
The only thing I noticed that I did not agree with is “He is cheated and Benipulated he sees Jacob”. He claimed at least to Ben,that he didn’t see Jacob but heard him,or actually he thought it was Ben that he heard. I agree with Quarantine that we don’t know if it was Jacob in the form of Walt,Smokey or who knows? maybe it really was Walt. Just not sure. I really think you covered Locke pretty well up to “Through the Looking Glass” + 1
Jam, I with you here. Locke is definitely a special character. And even though the writers of LOST tend to get everybody running in one direction only to break ankles later, I think they have heroic intentions for Locke.
Although, I’m more interested in your comment about Jacob. Who/what is Jacob? How do you know that Jacob was Walt standing over a wounded Locke? Are Jacob and the black-smoke-monster somehow connected?
Hi all thanks for the great comments. I like to see Locke in a postive light. I think this season we have seen John take a seemingly darker path however i do have faith that he will be a hero in the end. I have to admit that my comment of Walt been a Jacob illusion was a bit of a guess. But the line by Ben lets hope that Jacob can save you John. And then hey presto Walt is at the side of the pit. It is also not the first time we have seen Walt appear in places he shouldn’t for example when Shannon died.
jamtay, nice positive theory on Locke. +1
He’s had such a dark season, I do hope you’re right and he will turn out to be one of the good guys.
Nice summary on Locke. I think he’s one of the good guys too.
