some of this might not add up if you don’t agree with looping theory,
firtstly the pilot episode clue, which can be checked in pilot 2. listen to cindys announcement on the plane…
jacks crashback “ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seat belts”
charlie’s “ladies and gentlemen, the captain has TURNED on the fasten seatbelt sign, please return to your seats”
kate’s “ladies and gentlemen, the captain has switched on the fasten seatbelt sign, please…”
these were definitely three different events, but we’ll leave that there for now.
the exact time and date of the crash occured within about 10 minutes of the autumn solstice(or summer equinox, one of them sorts of dates..) also, naomis arrival coincided precisely with the winter solstice (or whatever) in on-show, off-island time.
this would suggest that the island is only visible / accessible during these brief periods, this is one of the secrets of the islands location.
i read an excellent post on this which ties up all the dates, portals, times, distances etc, and shows how extremely well planned this storyline is. i’ll try and find it later…
anyway, these solstice / equinoxes are based on astronomy, and it is historically / mythalogically established that it is at these periods when strange phenomenon are most likely to occur around the world’s 7 known portals/ vortexes. the best-known example of this would be the bemuda triangle. i know the writers debunked BT but the not the theory behind it. research on the portals needed if anyone has time?
so. i think it’s plausible that the plane was purposefully taken in the wrong direction, under instruction by whatever power, in order to reach the appropriate portal at the right time, thus translocating it to the island.
at this point i should check wether they could also have travelled in time.
i’m sketchy on desmonds influence in this, it could have been a simple coincidence, or his EM discharge could have affected this phenomenon further, i don’t pretend to fully understand the science bits.
so, translocation… i think its a bit of an unknown but one great question seems to be ” if a living, concious entity translocated through a portal / vortex, would the entity be phsically transported, or would they be copied? if copied, what happens to the original?”
o.k. it’s a toughie, but consider locke and rose…
if our losties were copied then they would almost literally get a new life, another huge clue from the very beginning. but how does this work? i reckon their mental characteristics and memory would have to copy into a new body, hence any non-genetic ailments such as paralysis and cancer would not be implied on the new form.
also with locke, when he was shot and blacked out in the pit… watch walt’s appearance again, but this time consider that john had woken up, seen his situation and thought he had either switched back to his former, paralysed life. either that or he thought that his on island time had been just a dream, that he had fallen from the plane into the pit, and he still couldn’t walk. read into his face when walt says “you CAN walk, john…”, he looks more relieved than surprised , this is the main role of walts appearance- to reassure john that his island experience actually happened.
translocation during these equinoxes could be how richard is able to travel to the outside world, and eventually how jack is able to return to the island (if you agree that they have been there before). not sure how he got back in time but loop theory explains it.
so, three different crashes, translocation and access to the island - any suggestions?

Dear lockcheesedream,
The real YKTN here. Please check out my (recently flagged “debunked” and “trollish”, but previously highly-rated) theory,
http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/aug/03/where-earth-island/
I think it address you “vile-vortex” idea…
And nice catch on the different flight announcements. I sure missed that one!
Interesting read. +1 for me! :)
Dear lockscheesedream,
Sorry I typed your name wrong in my first post :)
Dear everyone,
I just noticed I ID’d myself YTKN in my 2 earlier posts, instead of YKTN…
Lots of typos lately;)
Dear lockscheesedream,
Me again!
Just read your other 2 theories, including ‘is kate the cobra’, and was extremely amused with your verbal spat with my “alter-ego” you_knowtheNARNE! :)
Unlike, him/her/it, I find that theory (and this one btw) quite plausible if time loops/travel etc were allowed in the Lost universe…
Locks CD, You put forth a nice theory, regarding trans-location. +1 This subject can be expanded upon further. I am not a scientist, but will attempt to use layman’s terms to explain, the little that I know about the following.
Something which I found interesting is the 11th dimension, or M-theory, or (the theory of everything), which describes the theory of Super String. It is believed by some, that time has no relevance, and that all dimensions are experienced simultaneously, which would lend some support to your theory. Also, the past, present and future, life and death, many lives are being played out simultaneously.
One thing which Stephen Hawking and the Dalai Lama agree upon, is that energy cannot die. It can only be transformed into another form of energy, moving through the dimensions of space.
I am not suggesting that this is what is happening on the show, but that your theory can be explained rationally, with scientific facts, if this were the case.
I’m not convinced that we are witnessing 3 separate events. There are at least two other, simpler, explanations that need be examined and discarded before we decide that we have to get off the train at Crazyville. 1) A simple production inconsistency. This seems the simplest answer. 2) The unreliable narrator. This is a literary device wherein the story is told through a character’s eyes. Simply stated, the announcement in Kate’s flashback is what it is, because that’s the way Kate remembers it. Charlie remembers his slightly differently, as does Jack. Haven’t you ever been around two people with a great story, but they get telling it, and they start disagreeing about details and who said what, and what order things happened in? You wouldn’t automatically assume that the event in their story happened twice, would you? Would you assume they are in a time loop?
I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m saying we need to eliminate the simplest answers before we start taking flights of fancy.
Occam’s razor: it’s not just for shaving anymore.
“so, translocation… i think its a bit of an unknown”
Well, at least I can agree with THAT.
If we could see a bunch of Trekkies discussing the physics of warp drive, and the way that energy is created in the matter/antimatter chamber and exactly how the dilithium crystals worked, you would realize one thing very quickly: They are idiots. There is no such thing as warp drive. There is no such thing as a matter/antimatter chamber. There is no such thing as a dilithium crystal. Trying to figure out the exact mechanisms by which these things work is ridiculous. IT IS completely fictional AND MADE UP.
Now we are trying to figure out the exact mechanism and implications of “translocation” through the use of “vile vortexes.”
I just don’t see the difference between the two. If you want to say everybody split into two, great. Call it magic and get on with the story. In reality, isn’t that what Star Trek’s warp drive is? It is a completely nonsensical device whose only function is to allow the characters to move from place to place. An in depth discussion of transwarp physics adds nothing to their stories.
Oh, and BTW, a plus one. Because the island told me to.
Quarantine It would be helpful to address the person you are referencing your comment to, in case the would like to respond. Thanks
Dab: This is the area to comment on lcd’s post, and that was what I was doing. I’m not sure what the source of your confusion is, but, having been married for 20 years, I know the answer: “My fault!”
Quarantine: LOL x2. This “theory” or whatever does seem pretty weird, I couldn’t really pay attention as I was reading it. Does that happen to anyone else?
Quarantine, I guess my source of confusion is, why YOU feel the need to be rude, for NO reason, when asked politely to do what every other member on this site does! But, thanks for setting me straight!
I was certainly straightforward, but I don’t see that I was rude.
I said I wasn’t convinced about three events, and stated two simpler explanations.
In another comment I said (in too many words, probably) that we are focusing too much energy on figuring the exact mechanism of imaginary stuff. The point being that vile vortexes and warp drives don’t propel the story.
After that, I gave Cheese-man a plus one.
So, your feelings have been somehow hurt. I don’t understand it, but I’ve learned that it makes no sense to tell people that their feelings are “right” or “wrong.” Here is something else I learned in a long (yet too-short) marriage: I apologize for offending you, Dab.
Q: You rock dude.
