No intro.

Women die from pregnancies on the island, but only under certain conditions. Claire was able to bear Aaron, and Sun was able to conceive. Both were on the Island when this happened. Can someone please elaborate on this and tell me why they have no problem finding fruit on the Island? Fruits are the ovaries of plants. Does the pregnancy issue only apply to animals? Am I just retarded? Am I missing something? Please comment.

i think its more to do with time than biology - read around!

Locke was hunting boar. They must have gave birth also because we see a baby boar in one episode (Sawyer and Kate). Which means animals and as you stated above fruit can bear offspring. Claire and Danielle concieved off the island so were able to give birth on it. But in the case of Sun she concieved on the island so her future is looking pretty bleak.

We don’t know what the reason is, but lets say, for instance, that it is a disease. I have heard of some diseases that humans can contract that fruits and boars don’t. I may have read that in a medical journal. It’s pretty radical stuff.

well i do have some experience in the ob/gyn field. and there defintly are some diseases that can only be contracted by humans, AIDS is one for example. Most diseases that are contracted by humans only, are usually sexualy transmitted and since Juliet said that male sperm count is increased on the island. I think it could have something to do with if that extra sperm is someone causing the women to contract a fatal disease.

Artorio its an interesting question. As Wardy says there is evidence that some animals such as the boars have had children however we have debated on this site before why there don’t seem to be more kinds of animals, like monkeys etc, and whether maybe this was the reason for their absence.

As for fruit, I don’t know. I would say the biology of vegetables and animals are so different they probably can’t be compared or crossed.

LostCrazy just as a side note, I was under the impression that scientists thought there was a link between Aids and monkeys? Certainly humans die from a different strain of the disease but who is to say it can’t affect animals? Sorry not criticising, genuinely interested. Thinking in particular about the bird flu and other similar viruses…

I don’t want to be difficult but AIDS is certainly not exclusive to humans. Chimpanzees are routinely infected with the virus for research purposes. And as Missus said - the orgin was ape wasn’t it? Or believed to be.

I think we need more information to figure out the reproductive problems but I’ll be watching the 3rd season again and paying better attention.

yes i know it stemmed from apes, I was just saying that the same type of disease can have different effects on different species, or plants and that it does not affect them in the same way it affects humans was my point. who knew lost would help me study for microbiology? i am a student cut me some slack… haha

I would have thought the reason that there is not more wildlife on the island would be obvious.

It is a small island cut off from the mainlands. Being a tropical island in the pacific, it is probably very young, geologically speaking. Big storms blow seeds thousands of miles, which explains the plant life. But animals have to either be brought to the island, or evolve there. There hasn’t been nearly enough time for evolution to have created complex life forms there.

So, the question is not, “Why aren’t there monkeys,” the question is “why ARE there boar?”

Lostcrazy: I, too have some experience in the ob/gyn field. But just as an amateur enthusiast. I’m jealously guarding my status so that I can deliver babies in the 2008 Olympics.

To lostbot: LMFAO!!! >:D To everyone else: thank you for your responses. I now have a better idea of what might be causing these problems with the poophole. :)

The “poophole?” Who taught your sex ed class?

If this in the kind of information that The Others are using, the fertility problem is coming into focus.
