This is less a theory and more of an observation. While procrastinating I read an article about Victorian lighthouse keepers and I saw some, what I found to be interesting, parallels between Desmond and historic lighthouse keepers. Lighthouse keepers during the Victorian period, similar to the crews in the Swan station, worked in pairs so that if one of men were killed there would be someone left to ensure that the machinery kept going. Further, the lighthouses of the Victorian period were operated by clockwork, so every hour or hour-and-a-half or so an alarm would sound alerting the lighthouse keepers that they needed to wind up the clockwork to keep the lighthouse light rotating.

Moreover, the lighthouse keepers, at least on off shore lighthouses, would spend months in near total isolation and if one of the lighthouse keepers were killed the remaining one would have to wait those months out until being relieved. Finally, the role of the lighthouse keeper was to keep passing ships safe and the keepers of the Swan station were tasked with keeping the rest of the world safe.

Perhaps, the analogy between the lighthouse keeper of old and the keepers of the Swan station isn’t a perfect one but I was curious as to whether you folks think that the parallels are enough to perhaps infer something about the Swan station. More particularly, do you think that the Swan station might in some manner be compared to a lighthouse? If I remember correctly at some point in the series, after the destruction of the Swan station, Ben does say to someone that since the Swan station was destroyed people could no longer find the island.

I’m sorry but this is the smallest idea stretched into the biggest piece of writing I’ve ever seen here. I’m not usually this harsh, but the lighthouse analogy was obvious and what Ben meant was the electromagnetic pulse wrecked their communications and navigation equipment. I don’t want to discourage you from posting theories, you are a good writer, but you need a better idea.

Well, I learned something new about lighthouses.

I didn’t learn anything new about Lost.

I thought it was good too! Good research and I loved the parallels you pointed out between Des and the lighthouse keepers. +1

Iwish, I also liked the parallels drawn. The Swan was definitely an Observatory of sorts. +1

I’m with CPB: this has the highest words to ideas ratio on the site. Congratulations, you are Master of the Obvious.
