this is my first theory and i am sure there are many flaws, feel free to shoot it down in flames :) some of it must be right!
Right… I think the ship coming to the island is the ‘Helgus Antonius’ (thanks lostpedia) - originally a medical ship built for the Hanso foundation by Paik Heavy Industries but now being used by Mr Paik himself (Mr Paik is Sun’s father as you lot probably know)
Paik Heavy Industries and the Widmore Corpartation were originally contracted to the Hanso Foundation to supply -
Paik - mainly vehicles - boats, submarine, jeeps, dharma van :)
Widmore - Construction and Medical Supplies (possibly built island stations, pregnancy test on island were widmore)
BUT.. Paik and Widmore have discovered the purpose of Hanso and Dharma and plan to cease control of the island and control the Valenzetti equation (4,8,15,16,23,42 ) for their own profit. they have attempted to find the island before - Henry Gale’s ballon was manufactured by Widmore industries and they sponsered Desmonds race
Hanso had broke down the factors of the equation, for example 4 - Nuclear Winter 8 - Chemical/Biological 15 - Enviromental/Natural Disaster 16 - Conventional warfare 23 - Pandemic 42 - Overpopulation
Hanso/Dharma’s mission was to change “core environmental and human factors” in the equation to save humanity (good guys). however the power hungry Paik and Widmore want to take control of the factors effecting the equation as whoever controls the end of the world, controls the world.
lost yet, me too
what if it were possible that the equation could be worked backwards to identify specific people and locations that can effect the outcome of the equation, does hanso/dharma know this, widmore/paik know this or Smokey/Jacob know this
Maybe it is possible that these groups know for example that Locke, Jack, etc can influence the factors of the equation and the location is on the island for example if jacob knows this he would have instructed Ben on the apprpriate action to take, hence all the kidnapping that’s gone on like Walt
did they know the plane would crash at this location and in doing so made sure certain people were on the plane….. i think it is possible. Take Mr Paik for example and his relationship with Jin and the 2 watches….Jin is ordered by Mr. Paik to deliver one to a business associate in Sydney, Australia and one to another associate in Los Angeles. Jin delivers the first watch in Sydney but as we know the Flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles crashes on the island. Mr Paik needs to get somebody on that flight and made sure Jin. WHY? because if Paik plans to take control of the island he must find where it is, placing a tracking device/ GPS system in the watch should do it…..
right, so know the watch is on the island as planned with Jin and he can locate it in his boat, but he hasn’t because Ben turned on the jamming signal in the looking glass..Paik’s only clue of where the island may be is the last location given by the watch before the plane crashed.. now the jamming signal is off …he’s coming… duh duh daa
right, onto other smaller theories i have
Smokey/Cerberus/security system Smokey is the islands security system/course correcter it corrects by killing, sparing or recruiting and directing people(appearing as jacks father, Walt ), it kills people who interfere with the valentezzi equation for the worst ( Eko, the Pilot) and recruits people who can help for the better (appearing as Walt to Locke) or the complete opposite and it is a course correcter to ensure the end of the world hence dharma needing protection against it with a sonic fence
one more wild one… is Jacob possibly Magnus Hanso?? Aliver Hanso’ great grandfather who arrived at the island on the Black Rock

Whoa there, Smokey! Too much in one go. I’ve advised others the same as I’d advise you; take one of your ideas and explore it properly. Post many times if you like, but I think you do them all better service piece by piece.
Now let me ask about the bit that stands out for me from the above.
Where was that numbers reference from? The one about 4 = Niclear Fire, etc. If that’s official that’s a heck of a piece of information that’s new to these eyes!
Oh, and welcome by the way!
sorry but the meaning of the mumbers is just a example of the possible meanings, not official.
Smokey, welcome to the site.
My question to you would be this. Evil as he is, would Mr. Paik put his daughter on a flight that he knew would crash?
mmm, i thought about that a bit and if i recall jin asks sun to come with him on the flight for a vacation which would mean maybe paik was not aware sun was on it. Or, Paik doesn’t care because sun has brought shame on the family by having an affair
Smokey, I think Paik would have checked to make sure Jin was booked on the flight and then would have known Sun was with him. He probably knew before that, when the first watch was delivered. He has great connections.
As for the second choice, it’s a possibility. Our cultures are different and I hadn’t thought about that.
Smokey, You are entitled to post whatever you wish! There are no rules set out to how and what is acceptable to post!
Overall, I really like your theory and think you have made some relevant connections. I like the idea of Jin’s watch having a GPS tracking device, and like the connection to the freighter, accompanied with your thoughts about the equation, and why “the losties” are on “the island”. Plausible! Good thoughts! +1
Good first go! Much of these thought have been speculated upon but all have the possiblilty of accuracy. I too am a believer that the conglomerate corporations have lasting impact on the events on the island. They must be intricatly involved and many facts hint of their involvement. Good job +1
There is a troll “working” today; he is taking legitimate theories, like yours, and flagging them as “offensive” and sending them to the dump. It has happened to me 5 times today (I keep pulling it out of the dump, only to get re-dumped).
If this happens to you, all you have to do is “edit” you theory, and “save.” and it will return to the regular rotation.
I hate these guys.
dab, I was trying to formulate my comment about this theory when I realized, after reading your comment, that you had taken the very words out of my mouth!
It is difficult for me to reconcile the idea that Mr. Paik knew that Oceanic 815 would crash with the idea that he may have also known Sun would be on the plane. Korean culture or otherwise, I can’t imagine Paik being so angry with Sun that he would conspire to kill her (more or less). Perhaps Sun was added to the flight at the very last minute, and Mr. Paik couldn’t find out until it was too late. Lest we forget, within the confines of Lost’s television-show format we must expect at least a few minor inconsistencies.
One more thing, smokey: It seems you are presuming Widmore and Paik are in league regarding this seizure of the island from the hands of Hanso/Dharma together. What if this is not the case? We may have four separate parties interested in championing control of the island: Hanso/Dharma, Paik, Widmore, and The Others. The reason I suggest this is that it seems Penny is using Widmore’s resources to find Desmond — which may accidentally lead her to the island — thus, when she tells Charlie that the freighter is not her ship, it leads me to believe it is from a different organization than Widmore — such as Paik or Dharma/Hanso.
Or maybe you’re right and Penny is using some other resources to find Desmond (somewhere I swear I’ve read a theory that the two scientists in Antarctica were connected to a project the Hanso Foundation, under Mittelwerk’s control, was doing in the continent).
Who of us know for sure, yet? Only time or a spoiler will tell.
Overall good speculation! +1
If my memory of ‘House of the rising sun’ is correct, didn’t Sun secretly arrange with her mother that she would leave Jin at the airport? That a car would be outside for her just before the flight? But Jin producing a flower like the one he gave her on their wedding day, made her change her mind? Maybe Mr Paik was also in on the plan, and he never intended Sun to get on the plane? I’m not so sure if the flight was arranged anymore, but in season 1 I was convinced it was and I remember thinking about that.
CPB - you took words out of my mouth. Sun was booked on that flight but was not supposed to get on it. Maybe Papa Paik arranged her affair with a more ‘suitable’ son-in-law to separate her from Jin and was behind the scenes of Sun’s escape plan all along. Then he plotted up some skullduggery with that watch (what, like Rolex -that notoriously fly-by-night operation can’t be trusted to courier a watch from Seoul to LA?).
BUT - Smokey, remember that Michael has the watch now. Jin gave it to him on the raft. And Michael is….where exactly?
Firstly, thanks to everyone who’s commented on my theory and giving me a warm welcome.
one other possibility regarding the whole question as to Paik knowing about Sun being on the plane, it maybe that Paik did in fact know that Sun was getting on the plane but in his quest for control and power risking her life was a chance he was willing to take. after all, is sacrifice for the greater good (or evil in this case) a constant re-occuring theme throughout lost world.
also regarding rocketsexplode feedback, firstly thanks for spending the time to contribute your thoughts. it is much appriciated and definatly made me re-think the possibility of the Widmore corporation and Paik Heavy Industries working together - it does seem that it is more possible that they have in fact both gained information on the mysteries and power of the island and are in fact in direct competition for control, giving as you say 4 groups contending for control.
one thing that still confusses me is pennys part in it…do you think that penny is catching on to her fathers plans?, is she in Charles Widmores office when charlie recieves the incoming transmission in the looking glass? is she one step behind her father in locating desmond??
thanks again all
Smokey great theory sorry for the late reply but you might have a point about the watch being a tracker. The island scrambles the tracker so mr paik cant trace it. We also know the frieghter is not penny’s so there fore its safe to say the frieghter is either mr paiks or the di. At the end of season one jin gives the watch to michael in the raft. At the end of season two miachel leaves the island. Perhaps the frieghter finds michael via the tracking device on the watch. I guess well have to wait till season four.

Smoky, Regarding Penny and her involvement, a few of us have considered the notion that Penny, may be involved on some level, with Desmond coming to be on “the island” in the first place! She may have originally recruited Desmond on behalf of Widmore, but then actually fell in love with him and is using her resources to locate him! Dunno for sure, but something is up with her involvement.
Rockets, That happens to me as well.
Once again, nice work!
If they wanted certain people on the island, it seems that dropping them 30,000 feet inside a flaming tube of jagged metal would be problematic at best. I
