“Stop making Sense”
— Dharmacide
The Talking Heads album “Speaking in Tongues” is awesome. Clearly the producers of lost agree, or else it wouldn’t be shown in Juliet’s house. But is there more to it than that? Granted, David Byrne’s lyrics don’t always make much sense, but neither does Lost. But if you look at just a few choice lyrics from that album, it seems Lost-ish.
In “Burning down the house” : “watch out! You might get what you’re after” That sounds like many characters’ feelings after crashing on the Island. (Locke,Hurley,Desmond,Kate,Sawyer) Be careful what you wish for. “I don’t know what you expect staring into the TV set” For all of us viewers.
“Making Flippy Floppy”- “Set someone free, break someone’s heart” (Jack Kate Sawyer) “Everything looks impressive, but you might be deceived.” (The others) “Bring me a doctor” Jack! “we sing in the darkness, we open our eyes”
In “Girlfriend is Better” : “Stop making sense”- Stop making sense of the show? No way. “Down in the basement, we here the sounds of machines. I ‘m driving in circles, come to my senses sometime. Why start it over? Nothing was lost, everything’s free. I don’t care how impossible it seems.” That is like a mix between the underground labs theory,Jack’s flashforward, and Desmond’s time travel. Pretty nuts.
“I get wild/Wild Gravity”
“I fooled around enough with numbers. Let’s not be ourselves today. Is it my imagination . is it just someone’s face.” 4 8 15 16 23 42
“This must be the place”: “Home is where I want to be” “The less we say about it the better, Make it up as we go along” (the producers?) “Eyes that light up, look through you” “I got plenty of time. you got light in your eyes”
There are a lot of references to eyes in theses lyrics. And yes, I am aware that the David Byrne wasn’t talking about a TV show in the future, but I still find it interesting.
Dharma, I do find it very interesting! I am sure it is yet another reference which the writers want us to take notice of! Nice observations! +1
Dharmacide, I found it interesting too! Nice catch. I agree with dab, I don’t think the writers would have placed it in Juliet’s house unless they wanted us to see it. +1
Great post! One can certainly draw similarities between Talking Heads’ lyrics and LOST. Although, I’m more inclined to compare the concepts of LOST directly to life in general, without the band’s messages as the middlemen. Am I Making Sense?
The Talking Heads sing about all aspects of life. From love to hate and good to evil with wild unexplainable over-sized suit parties in between. LOST can be compared to all aspects of life, too. While the music of the Talking Heads can be compared to LOST, life itself is the common denominator.
Dark Side of the Moon, however…
I like your comments as well, Kris! Great thoughts!
Well done, Dharmacide!
So now we should all buy “Speaking in Tongues” and start the CD along with the video of the Pilot when Jack opens his eyes…

There is a troll “working” today; he is taking legitimate theories, like yours, and flagging them as “offensive” and sending them to the dump. It has happened to me 5 times today (I keep pulling it out of the dump, only to get re-dumped).
If this happens to you, all you have to do is “edit” you theory, and “save.” and it will return to the regular rotation.
I hate these guys.
The trolls are killing us. If you want to help do something, please check this:
