LOST-Theories.com

I’ve previously hypothesized that several characters have had many of their dreams, wishes, desires come to fruition. Some of you were way ahead of me and others of you co-signed it as a possibility.

For your consideration: http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/oct/23/get-what-you-ask/

I decided to cross-reference the word ‘wish’ with the transcripts of each episode, and had some interesting results. I admit up front that I’ve randomly selected instances in which the word is used and that there are other instances which don’t seem special, so this is an incomplete summary. Do with it what you will, but I think there’s something to it.

In short, I believe that as long as an individual’s desires don’t directly undermine the ‘greater good’(which I would define as literally a vote on the act…..if only 3 people are aware of it’s possibility and vote 2-1, it happens, if 50, 26…majority rules). I believe the crash was partly ‘willed’ to happen, and I believe a healthy portion of these quotes support my theory.

I’ve also decided to include off-island wishes, might as well, since Walt seemed to have off-island powers, Desmond’s flashbacks were off-island….even the real world in Lost is mysterious, so who knows?

maternity leave: 1. eko: Locke did not tell me anything. Who is he? I wish to speak to him. JACK: Speak to him about what? EKO: I wish to speak to him alone. Can you arrange this? JACK: Why should I do that? EKO: Because you wish to keep this a secret.

Eko blackmails Jack(compels Jack to want it), so in a sense, Jack ‘wants’ Eko to have his meeting, because it keeps Ben a secret.

2. ETHAN: I’m going to miss you. I wish — I wish you didn’t have to go. claire: Maybe I don’t have to go? ETHAN: We’ve been through this Claire. There’s not enough vaccine for you and the baby. claire: Well, I’m not, I’m not sick. ETHAN: Thank God. And once you’ve delivered you can go back to your friends and hopefully you’ll stay that way. claire: What if I want to see the baby? ETHAN: Hey, nobody’s going to take him from you unless that’s what you want. You have a choice. We’re good people, Claire. We’re a good family. But if you’re going to trust us with your child I want you to be sure. Okay?

Ethan wishes she could stay but his wish runs contrary to the rest of the Others. His comments concerning Claire’s wishes show the power of the individual’s will, much like Ms. Klugh willingly taking a bullet. Ethan doesn’t get his wish, Claire gets what we later know she wants, to be with Aaron.

hearts and minds: 1. kate: Can you believe we’ve been here for over 3 weeks? I was on my way to Bali. I travel a lot. I was looking forward to exploring the island. Somehow I ended up on a flight to LA, instead. Guess that falls under the category — be careful what you wish for.

This is pretty self-explanatory(again, I believe the majority of the Losties wanted to be on the island)

2. JIN [pointing at his fish]: [Says something in Korean.] hurley: You know what? Fine. You win, okay? You happy now? Keep your damn fish, I’m out of here. [Hurley throws his shirt-net away, and goes to walk off but steps on something.] hurley: Ow! Ow, ow, ow. And later……. HURLEY [handing over the papaya and knife]: Knock yourself out. You want to wish something on your worst enemy? Hope they step on a sea urchin. [Jin walks up and holds out a fish to Hurley.]

Jin thought to himself ‘stubborn bastard, I hope he steps on a sea urchin’, nobody was voting otherwise, he was the majority.

dave 1. hurley: When we first crashed here, I was like, this isn’t all bad — it’s, like, the all mango diet. I wasn’t turning any heads or nothing but I did drop a couple belt sizes. Then we found this hatch and it was full of food — tons of food. I tried giving it all away, but I guess I kind of kept some of it for myself. I wish I could just get rid of it. LIBBY: Then get rid of it. [Libby grabs a giant jar of ranch dressing and holds it out to Hurley.] LIBBY: You want to change — then change.

Hurley does in fact get rid of the junk food and begins eating better, he and Libby voting 2 to 0.

exodus pt. 3 1. Michael sees a picture of a watch drawn on paper with the word ‘watch’ written next to it. michael [to Jin]: Hey, your wife made this for you? JIN: Sun. michael: She sounded it out, huh — so you could learn English? JIN: Yes. michael: Yeah, I wish she had made one for me. JIN [offering the watch to Michael]: You.

Ok I know this might seem like a stretch but due to the convenient language barrier and unique style of writing, in a strange way, Michael is wishing for a watch. Jin notices the way Michael is looking at it and thinks why not give it to him after their new bond, Michael gets his wish, 2-0….he now has a watch that Jin made ‘I wish she made one for me’ referring to the watch instead of Japanese for dummies. A stretch? Maybe.

in translation 1. father [subtitled]: You are my son. It does not matter what you’ve done. JIN [subtitled]: I wish I could start over. FATHER [subtitled]: Why can’t you? JIN [subtitled]: I have responsibilities.

Here is Jin wishing to be on the island, albeit vaguely. Another vote on the plane is cast.

house of the rising sun 1. charlie: My guitar? Uh, 8 days, 11 hours, give or take. LOCKE: You miss it? [Charlie nods] Well, a lot of wreckage. It might still turn up. charlie: Undamaged? Still playable? I don’t think so. I mean, I wish, but there was this bloke at the counter made me check it in.

Self-explanatory, Charlie wishes for his guitar back and gets it.

Here are some other ‘wishes’ using different terminology

not in portland alpert: There must be something that he would respond to. juliet: If he were hit by a bus. How about that? That would work.

We all know how that worked out.

everybody hates hurley carmen: Falling down is not exercise. The only time you move is to lift a drumstick from the bucket. Everyday it’s the same thing, Hugo — you work, you eat chicken. You have to change your life, Hugo. You think someone else will change it for you? Maybe if you pray everyday Jesus Christ will come down from heaven, take 200 pounds and bring you a decent woman, and a new car. Yes, Jesus can bring you a new car.

Well how about that. Hurley starts losing weight, gets a decent girl, and a new car(VW van). Maybe he prayed for it to happen??

Jack wants ‘something to fix’ and his father to be alive, Kate wants a fresh start and freedom, Sawyer wants to kill the man that killed his parents, Locke wants to become a walking, hunter/leader/chosen-one and prove himself, Charlie wants to kick his addiction and live the family life like his brother, Eko wants to pay for his sins, Jin wants a new life with Sun away from her father’s reach, Sun was already trying to escape to begin with, Rose & Bernard both want to find the place where she can be healed, Michael wants to bond with Walt, Walt(Locke tells us he burned the first raft)fights leaving the island so at the very least he must somewhat wants to be there, Juliet wants her sister to be healed, Sayid wants to redeem himself for being a ruthless torturer and align himself with noble causes, Claire wants to be a mother and a good one….etc etc etc.

So there you go.

I like it. The wish is a powerful thing and all of the survivors are seemingly ‘getting’ what they truly desire. What a fantasy. Once they recieve what they truly desire are they indebted or owe for these wishes becoming a reality. Do they owe the island, or Jacob or are the wishes free with no obligation to repay. Is their life the payment? Is theyre a price for redemption? Interesting idea! +1 great subject

I agree with Tharde that this is a great topic. There was a lot of press about this idea in the UK recently due to a much loved but clearly crackpot British presenter revealing that he got his career back on track thanks to asking the universe to provide! Its called Cosmis Ordering and describes the idea you are talking about to a tee. For more info check out this link:

Personally I’m not a believer. I think this is an example of synchronicity more than wish fulfillment.

+1 for a good theory though.

Excellent theory Rise! You just may have something here. I’d not thought of this aspect of the island in these terms. And the idea of wish fulfillment reminds me of another theory posted a few days ago by LittleBritain:

    http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/oct/29/it-possible-black-smoke-djinn/

    Could there be a connection?

Rise, I think you know my sentiments are right there with you! The “collective consciousness” is indeed a powerful and awesome thing. And, you are right Missus! I believe that synchronicity is part of the “collective conscious” at work!

Great thoughts and discussion by all. I couldn’t agree more!

    PS Love the title!

After the crash didn’t they all “wish” to be rescued? How’d that turn out?

Reducing Lost to the status of a combination voting booth/wishing well is not giving the island - or the writers - their due.

I’m not saying I’m totally on board with the following, but if there was something along these lines going on, I would say that each character is getting what they NEED, not what they want.

Jack doesn’t want to be the leader. But he NEEDS to get past the crap his dad laid on him (Don’t be a leader, because you don’t have what it takes.)

Jin surely desired a subservient wife. Watch him slap her hand as if she was a child in Pilot (pt 1 or 2, I can’t remember). What he NEEDED was to learn to respect Sun and bring some parity to their relationship,

Sun’s wish was to leave Jin. I’m still not completely clear on why she didn’t. But she needed to be able to view Jin with new eyes, and it seems they are really very happy now.

Kate wishes to be untethered, and invisible. What she NEEDED was friends, loved ones, support, the opportunity to be part of a community. She is very visible, and has responsibilities to others which she honors.

Hurley wanted to understand the numbers. That was why he went to Australia. What he needed was freedom from the supposed “curse” of the money. As he drives off in his VW van, he sure looks like the luckiest guy in the world.

You get the idea. What do you think?

(BTW, I saw a very similar exchange elsewhere, and not all these ideas are my original ones.)

Always a pleasure to read your stuff, rise. My opinions on this one are similar to those I shared on the previous one you cite.
