hey all, & let me preface this by saying that i’m highly intimidated by the wealth of knowledge posessed by most of you, so go easy. i’m only little & fragile. :D
this is only an observation, because i haven’t been able to form this into a theory as such. also, i did try to search for any theories that may have already covered this, but only found people who have killed their parents, so please don’t go nuts if i’m reapeating something already mentioned.
so here goes… i can think of 3 (maybe 4) instances on this show where parents have killed people to protect their children/because of their children.
1) ana-lucia: killed the man who shot her & killed her unborn child 2) sun: killed colleen in defense of her unborn child 3) michael: killed ana-lucia & libby to save walt from the others (possible 4) rousseau: killed her entire team in self defense/defense of her child
so, as i said, its not a huge theory or anything massively important (that i know of). i thought it was a connection worth noting though. just as almost every second person on lost has killed one of their parents, there may be a link of people killing FOR their children.
make of it what you will, i’m just procrastinating at work & thought i’d share some thoughts. feel free to leave comments or list anyone i might’ve forgotten.
salutes

before some disgruntled member come chargin let me say this
he
kidding this observation all ready been maide dont remember who but its all ready out there
I haven’t seen it pointed out but I’ve been thinking about it lately, more specifically, killing in the hopes of a family reunion. There’s an extensive track record of Lost characters killing in order to be reunited with their family members and I wonder if, perhaps, Ben is helping the Hostiles because he, like Michael, has been promised to be reunited with his family(mother). His first scene with Richard seems to be Richard offering him a chance at the reunion, as long has Ben can be ‘very, very patient’. I also think Ben has made a similar promise to Danielle and that might be why she’s been dishonest with the Losties at times. Considering how many Losties have paternal issues I wouldn’t be surprised to see this same promise and consequent leverage applied more often. Ok, I know the bulk of what I’m saying isn’t exactly what you brought up, but it’s been on my mind so I figured this was as good a place as any to discuss it. Thanks for getting the ball rolling, and don’t hesitate in the future.
nino: considering the genius of some of the things i’ve read on this site, i’m not at all surprised someone beat me to the punch. but i really did look before i posted! honest! :D
risebysin: i think what you’re saying is probably just expanding on my thoughts… killing for children/killing for family could almost be seen as the same thing. i agree with what you said about danielle too, as she’s always done a lot of things to make me suspicious of her.
i don’t know if richard was offering him a reunion though… i got the impression that richard was more surprised than anything else when ben said he had seen his mother. i do believe that richard understood this made ben special… but my interpretation was that richard was offering him more of an explination than a reunion, but i still like the way you think.
Spirit I don’t remember reading this myself and I think its a good, astute observation. I’d like to add a couple of names to your list, if I may.
Sawyer: Okay this is a bit of a stretch but he is a parent (of Clementine) and he also kills Tom as revenge for kidnapping Waaaaaaaalt from the raft. One could argue it is his role - albeit very much disguised under the tough exterior - as a parent which makes him kill Tom.
Charlie: Not a parent in the strictest sense of the word but he has taken on pareting duties of Aaron and kills Ethan in defense of Claire and Aaron.
mrssawyer: i did think about sawyer & clementine, but i didn’t actually think about him in connection to walt, which is interesting in itself… sawyer doesn’t kill for his own child, but someone elses.
and also, thank you for putting charlie on the list! for some unknown reason him killing ethan didn’t occur to me, but i had this nagging feeling he belonged here.
again, scraping the barrel with these ideas
good for what it is, but rubbish in terms of Lost
just read again, your a new poster, dont want to put you off writing, not having a go at you persoanlyy, just think the content is mindless and desperate
spirit, congrats on your first theory! Good observation. +1
Mrsmrs, good pickup on your part, as well!
Charlie also sacrificed himself for Claire and Aaron, and left his one family keepsake with Aaron, like a real parent would have.
Nice call ozzig!! I agree.
ace: trust me, you’re not going to put me off. i’ve got a bit more gumption than that. and for a post that’s not trying to put me off writing anything else, “mindless & desperate” seems pretty negative. am i meant to apologise my observations didn’t set your imagination on fire? well sorry.
everyone else, thanks for the messages & its pretty cool to see people expanding on the point… or should i say, scraping my barrel with me. :)
