LOST-Theories.com

This theory is based on Jack is Jacob back in time by hooten. You may wish to read it before continuing.

Was there any real reason for Sawyer’s real name to revealed as James Ford?

Could the writers/producers of the show have decided to fit his name is with John/Jacob/Jack in the theory developed by WWonka? I can’t think of a reason why a major character would have such a total name change so early, yet not that early, on. Not really a theory but could maybe offer back up to the other theories? Please go easy on a newbie!!

An update:

John, Jack, Jacob and James are all names derived from the same origin. The known last names of these characters are Locke, Sheppard and Ford. All are nouns…..and also verbs. The only other character I can find that has a last name that is a noun and also a verb is Charlie Pace. I guess also Mr. Eko if you stretch it.

Something? Anything? What do you think?

sorry Katydid, I’m not really seeing the point of this one, could you expand your theory a little?

I’m just saying, what real reason was there to change (or reveal) Sawyer’s name? I think maybe there was some retroactive plot development, ie. fitting the name ‘James’ in. One of the theories (sorry, I should go back and find the actual theory, could be ‘Jacob=Jack’) , had a comment making the connection betweeen the names Jacob, John, Jack and James. Is Sawyer being fitted in to a grander story arc here? As I said, not so much a theory I have here as an idea. I probably should have posted this as a comment instead but I thought I’d make it a separate thread as I couldn’t find any others noting this ‘name reveal’.

I think there’s something to the 4 ‘J’s‘ - I just don’t know exactly what yet. I apologize again for vagueness.

ok I see where you’re going. I think it was the writers’ plan all along to reveal that Sawyer was not his real name. Now whether they planned a J name or that is something that came up later, only they can answer. I agree there is probably someting to the J names though. Good thoughts.

See, I’m wondering if the writers didn’t plan it all along, that they developed it later and had to change Sawyer’s name - which gives credence to the idea that the J’s are connected somehow.

    Or not, who knows.

I think they did plan it all along. In Pilot Part 2, we see Sawyer reading ‘the letter’ he wrote himself to present to the real Sawyer. Reading the letter reminds him of his purpose in life, and he abruptly present an apparent character change to the rest of the survivors and joins Sayid’s small group on a mission to higher ground to try and transceiver.

En route, he shoots a polar bear, but that’s by the by! The point is, the letter Ford wrote as a boy was seeded in the Pilot episode - very well planned in advance.

Katydid, welcome. Some good thoughts here, I do agree with Angelo that the writers had planned all along for his name to be revealed. I just don’t know what the four names beginning with ‘J’ are going to mean to Lost.

Should we not add Jin to that list?

    Good point about Jin LJ.

Could it be possible that Michael’s middle name is Michael and that’s what he goes by? Maybe the “J” seen in the obit / article is his first name?

    Sayid’s last name is Jarrah.

Just some thoughts. Good post Katydid.

The four J names I referred to were John, Jack, Jacob and James. I read in another post that these names are all of the same origin, essentially the same name. That’s the connection I’m referring to, if there is one. I wonder what language Jarrah is and what the origin on that name is?

    Thanks everyone!

Jarrah is Arabic and can mean “vessel”.

Katydid, thanks for being a great member of this site and taking what some would consider criticism and using that to develop the discussion. Great job. +1 for the way you worked it.

Thanks Lockeko - I keep reading others comments that they have a hard time breaking in to this group but you’ve all been so welcoming to me - even though my first attempt here wasn’t spectacular. Onward and upward, I hope.

I think everybody has said this, but perhaps I can do so more perspicaciously.

There was never a time that Sawyer was not going to be revealed to be Ford. The fact that he literally attempted to become what he sought to destroy is a key to his character. If fact, in the episode where he is about to con a couple out of a huge sum of money, he stops when he sees their young child, and realizes that he IS Sawyer, the man who destroyed his family.

    Yes. I find it very…perspicacious.
