This theory was inspired by Galileo, quantum physics, and the popular board game Jenga.
Desmond Hume - I think it’s possible that the first time we saw Desmond in the pub(he saw the outcome of the game and the bartender attacked)was another one of his visions of a potential future. The second time around, which we assume was him re-living his past, could merely be Desmond yet again(see Charlie) altering a possible course of events that he was somehow clairvoyant enough to see. His visions could very easily be loosely described as ‘time-traveling’ by the writers/producers because in essence he is witnessing future events. Consequently, when he gets hit by the cricket stick, his return to the island could simply be his vision of the future. His memories of the island are merely visions of his future and that’s where he recognizes Charlie from, when he sees Charlie singing and is trying to remember where he’s seen him before the memories appear in the same manner as his visions of Charlie’s death, flashes….which could be flash-forwards, could they not? Furthermore……Mrs. Hawking is chiefly responsible for Desmond subscribing to the idea that fate can’t be avoided…she plants the seed in his head. Without this certainty, Desmond would never have sacrificed Charlie. He only allowed Charlie to die because he was convinced it would happen eventually. But is that true? Desmond could’ve kept saving Charlie, there’s nothing that happened that showed us otherwise. Ok, so another threat popped up the next day….that doesn’t mean Desmond would fail in saving Charlie, if anything the evidence shows us that Desmond CAN save Charlie. Also, what’s up with Desmond constantly drinking and being unconscious and having a change of heart? He’s hungover when he leaves Ruth and joins the monastery, he’s drunk when he leaves the monastery and falls for Penny, he’s drinking when he has his vision in the pub, he’s knocked unconscious when he falls off the boat and arrives on the island, he’s drunk when he returns to the island, he blacks out after turning the key, he’s concussed when he’s painting his apartment with Penny. I mean really, what gives? This has to fit with Jack drinking and Juliet’s pre-voyage cocktail and Locke’s happy-paste. Thoughts?
Jack - While we’re dealing with the issue of visions and time, why can’t Jack’s flash-forward be a hypothetical future where Jack sees how his life would be if he is off the island? As I examine Desmond’s clairvoyance I’m starting to think that MANY of the Losties share the same abilities. Why can’t Jack have visions? Maybe that’s why he insisted on being on the plane.
Locke - I believe that Locke has the same exact abilities that Desmond has. He knew in advance that the plane would fall and faked weakness so Boone would die. He, like Desmond, has experienced an altered state of consciousness and received information in that state(albeit Locke’s was intentional and self-enduced). It seems as though Locke is somewhere in between Mrs. Hawking and Desmond in terms of harnessing his abilities. However, we know from Desmond that these outcomes are not written in stone…perhaps that’s why Locke is so easily mislead….he’s seen one possible outcome only to experience a completely different one. This would also explain why Locke has always possessed a great sense of fate and his own predestination…..he has seen it or has been told it by Mrs. Hawking or a similar figure.
Mrs. Hawking - If Desmond is destined to not buy the ring and not propose to Penny, then why did Mrs. Hawking have to convince him? I think she, like Desmond, is capable of visions, has fine-tuned her abilities(‘you’re a first timer aren’t you?’), and is seeking to manipulate a certain outcome, much like Desmond does on the island with Charlie. Her motive? ‘and if you don’t turn the key, every single one of US is dead’. The emphasis on US strikes me as a little odd, and it’s written into the script in capital letters. How come she doesn’t say ‘everyone’ will die? I think she is on one of the two ‘sides’ that Locke speaks about and is protecting that ‘side’. She is clairvoyant enough to know that Desmond can be manipulated and positioned. Perhaps the ‘US’ even refers to people with their shared abilities, inferring that Desmond has a rooting interest. Here’s proof of what Mrs. Hawking is capable of: Desmond has visions about finding Naomi and rounds up all the people he saw in his vision. If he had the stomach to let Charlie die, his vision would’ve come true. Imagine if Mrs. Hawking had the stomach, as she proved when the man in the red shoes dies in front of Desmond at the jewelry store….she would be able to manipulate a desired outcome based on her visions. When Desmond is leading his vision-inspired group he refuses to divulge details about what he saw, for fear of “changing the picture on the puzzle box”. In other words, if he can control every element in play, he can achieve the desired outcome. So how do we know that isn’t what Mrs. Hawking is doing when she talks to Desmond? How do we know that this course-correcting is going on and that Desmond’s vision are unavoidable? Everything we’ve seen proves the opposing theory.
Charlie - the 2nd time that Desmond sees him, Charlie’s sign says ‘the musical stylings of Charlie Hieronymous. Hieronymous Bosch was a 15th century artist who’s most famous painting(Death Of The Miser), according to the first site that popped up in my googling of Bosch, symbolically suggests that even on the doorstep of death it’s never too late to make amends. The miser lived a life of vice. Sounds like Charlie’s death to me. No theory here just some info, sorry :)
Cindy Chandler - is NOT a DI/Hanso/_ operative planted on the plane. Her fiance and author Gary Troup(his manuscript Bad Twin was dedicated to her)was sucked into a turbine. So either they both knew the risk and rolled the dice or they were blindsided by the crash and she was later ‘persuaded’ to join the Others.
Ok I know this is unfocused and a lot to digest, but have at it. I’m sure I forgot 1000 other themes on my mind.
Ok I had to add this. Check out the exterior of the most famous painting(triptych), The Garden of Earthly Delights, of Hieronymus Bosch and tell me what it makes you think of.

Fantastic info indeed. Well done. The image of this painting makes me think that the island is in a biosphere. http://www.lost-theories.com/theories/2007/nov/02/snowglobe/ I took a beating on that one, but still maintain that some of the occurrences on the island could be explained readily if the island were protected from outside elements, including human interferrences. This connection to Hieronymus is certainly fodder to start some fires. It would have been better for me if you had posted this a couple of days ago. I also am a believer that John is having flashes and on the same token believe that Ben uses them constantly as a advantage. He seems to always be miles ahead of the rest of the inhabitants, but John might be not so far behind him. Great post +1
It’s late for me, so the Desmond paragraph I’m going to have to come back to. But the writers have stated that the flashforward of Jack’s was a definite event. Not a vision. It happens. As concrete as a flashback. Jack gets off the Island.
Love the Hieronymous info. Nice find. And I’m in agreement with you about Cindy (I think you may have even made this point on the theory about her I wrote a bit ago), though I think we’re in a minority!

you’re right about Cindy
At the end of Season 2, writers had plans to kill off Desmond, that is until they brought him back by popular fan demand. Knowing this, the writers either decided to change the script to revolve more around the Desmond/Penny story, or Desmond is just another player and has no significance to overall storyline … you pick —
They also planned to kill Jack in the pilot, so I’m not really worried about drastic changes from season to season. See Michael, Ana Lucia, etc. Ana Lucia could come back in season 5 and be the Messiah and they could make it work because the story revolves around the significance of the island and two sides, one light, one dark, fighting for the island.
Very good theory, Rise! I would agree with the majority of your observations. As mentioned, Jack does actually get off “the island”. What the writer’s have said is, that what the viewers are seeing in terms of the flashbacks and flashforwards are not be shown in sequential order! Nice job! +1
Hieronymous could be anagram for “Heroin So Yum”
What is interesting is that in an episode in season 3, the one where jack in somewhere in asia i dont really remember, it appears as if the women who is the “sherriff” looks like a young version of Mrs. Hawking. Your thoughts?
