Lostpedia quotes:

Robert Scott Kyker, who portrays Jacob, is the property master for the production crew. It isn’t uncommon for production staff to play small roles in the tapings. Other examples include the two people who played Gerald and Karen DeGroot, who incidentally are a couple in the real world. The voice of Jacob is played by Carlton Cuse. ”

Okay. I’m not sure how reliable lostpedia is but why would they put a crew member in this shot? Did they intend Jacob to only be an entity? Is the crew member going to be introduced on the show as a character? Perhaps the crew member was only a “stand in” for this shot and they thought no one would notice? Maybe because they intended Jacob to stay a shadowy figure or entity that they just chose someone to play this “small role”. Lostpedia says “….isn’t uncommon for production staff to play small roles….” I never would’ve thought “jacob” would be considered a small role. This really throws a wrench is theories that Jack is Jacob or Locke is Jacob. If it was intended to be one of them, wouldn’t they’ve cast them as this shadowy profile? And what about Carlton Cuse being the Voice…. wasn’t the crew member’s voice good enough? I can’t figure out what their intentions are in this scene.

Anyone have any good ideas?

It just seems unlikely for them to cast a staff member as such an important role unless they were never meant to be seen.

hmmmm.

Not sure what you mean by “only an entity.” As it happens I am an entity. As are my kids and my dog. And Microsoft.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is general knowledge at this time that the role of Jacob has been cast for season 4. Maybe there just wasn’t much point to going through an entire casting process in season 3 for a part that lasted less than 1 second.

All in all, my advice: calm yourself. All is well.

    WillsDad’s probably right.

A “small role” for us, and a “small role” when you’re out shooting are two different thing. Jacob’s a split-second appearance that has massive connotations in the Lost world. On a day’s shooting, it’s just some guy sitting in a chair with a close-up of his eye going wide.

It is rumoured that Jacob was seen in the pilot episode as one of the survivors that to this day, remain in the background.

He was wearing a white t-shirt. It is possible Carlton was used as the voice over for Jacob, as the sound of the smoke monster was made up of sound bites of a Hackney Carriage (London taxi)

I second that emotion! I’m an entity! No matter what my ex says.
